Given the hint that the three center model may no longer be Shero's plan at his season ending PC.... Staal. Staal-Ennis-Hodgson is a pretty dynamic trio down the middle.

All Things Jordan Staal

All things considered, acquiring Jordan Staal is probably the biggest move that the Sabres could realistically bring about this offseason short of dropping Pegulabux on Parise or Suter (IF things are as the tea leaves seem to suggest). The question, then, is what it would take in order to snatch him from the Pens, and what role would he play upon arrival. Can he realistically be a #1C for this franchise? Is he worth the cost? Would he re-sign here?

Have at it.

e: The main idea in making this thread is to avoid a potential echo chamber in the other. Staal's a big deal but he could become Roy4Hanzal2.0

Beerz 04-25-2012 07:43 PM

Trade Roy for Hanzal.

Then trade Hanzal , Pommers for Staal.

Chainshot 04-25-2012 07:45 PM

One of the few places I see Roy having some short-term value is as a piece to acquire Staal. He would give them a third pivot option for a season. I suspect the Pens would like a winger for Crosby to see if they can capture what Neal-Malkin create -- would that possibly be Armia? And of course they may want defense as well with how they've slagged Martin and how Letang struggled against the Flyers. Sekera would open up a hole on the Sabres blueline, but the QualCom is hard to ignore.

Roy, Armia, Sekera.

Phoenix laughs at the first one, the Sabres laugh at the second.

If we were able to get Hanzal, there wouldn't be a need to get Staal.

That's a steep price, but I don't think there's any doubt it gets the deal done. I'd have big reservations about losing Sekera, but maybe they can make up for some of it in FA.

for Staal, i'd offer ANY of the following Packages:
The "maintain the center depth" package
- Roy, Armia, McNabb

The "Premier Winger" package
- Vanek, Adam, Buf 1st

The "We want Pommer" package
- Pommer

Jame 04-25-2012 07:56 PM

and I would add (overpay) to get it done

I think Buffalo would want something else included too, but Staal is going to be a premium trade chip. Roy's value is surpressed. Armia's a bluechip prospect. Sekera is a good 2nd pairing defenseman. I don't see it as being too much. If they want the guy, they can pony up the offer and immediately blow his doors off with the extension offer. He wants to be THE guy... make him THE guy.

Out of all of those proposals... I think I'd want to do the Pommer one out of all them... even tho' Pommer is the best player.

Agreed. It's a little too steep for me though...I like the idea of Staal, but not that much. Plus, he only has 1 year left on his contract--and he will be UFA. You're basically talking about a rental with a chance of re-signing, but no guarantee.

This is a guy with a career high 50 points. Sure he could do more...but regardless how amazing he is defensively, that's a lot to give up for someone who probably tops out around 60 points.

Stafford + Pysyk, picks to even out. Stafford gives them a scoring winger, Pysyk is a top prospect at a position we are well stocked. If they want Roy to maintain the center depth, then they can add something to even out.

SoFFacet 04-25-2012 08:02 PM

Vanek+ for Staal and Martin, and Pominville for Staal straight up had some decent support from both sides in the trade forum.

Jame 04-25-2012 08:09 PM

If we are getting Stasi without giving up myers, hodgson, or ennis... Then the price is no where near "too steep"

Sekera has a tidy cap value that isn't going to be easily replaced in free agency. But... it would open up a full-time position for McNabb. I think the offset in possible line matching up front would offset the lose on the blueline in the short-term. With the Sabres pipeline on the backend bubbling up, I could see them taking the risk on going young for one or two of their blueline.

Then again, maybe they could play up the PA connections for Weber and move him instead?:help: Didn't think so...

JPurp26 04-25-2012 08:15 PM

Don't see Staal Moving.

I would be happy with a Brodziak Type third line center behind Ennis and Hodgson and then sign a 4th line guy who can take face offs and hit.

We need to bring in a bonafide winger or two (preferably Parise :sarcasm:) but seriously

I would however be the first one to include Vanek if it meant us getting Staal

Let's just say IF, IF one of Malkin/Crosby/Staal are available, Buffalo has the front office connections to make a deal work.

dma0034 04-25-2012 08:21 PM

Severe under-valuing of Vanek and Roy is happening here.

If anyone thinks the Sabres need to add to Vanek to get Staal you are wrong. Vanek was better than a ppg player half way through the season before getting injuried (without elite winger minutes).

Why are people even throwing Armia away? The Sabres stole him in the draft last year and I'd rather wait and see how he develops than grab a 3rd line center that seems to get treated like a 1st line center on this board.

Going forward to next year with Ennis, Hodgson and Roy is a nice 1-2-3 punch.

Stop Winnin 04-25-2012 08:21 PM

28 other teams going to be interested in Staal. If we do land him, we aren't going to be happy with the package we send Pittsburgh.

Chainshot 04-25-2012 08:22 PM

The whole idea is predicated upon pitching him an extension and making him the feature. Getting into hedging on what price to pay for a rental will leave them late to the party again...

For potentially ONE year of Staal?

He's UFA next summer. Sure, it's easy to say "Oh, we can resign him", but without any guarantee of keeping him long-term, you have to treat him like a very good rental.

i think pegula bucks makes it a different case.

with the up front money, and the ability to offer it a year early... i find it hard to believe he'd turn down :
- Top Dollar
- the chance to be the man
- the guaranteed money a year in advance

10 years / 60 million

i doubt he's saying no

Havok89 04-25-2012 09:19 PM

I would offer up:

Roy, Sekera, Adam

If Pittsburgh declines, move on, and hope to get Staal in free agency.

Not interested in giving up McNabb, Armia, or Foligno.
