I McLellan is as good as gone, no matter what DW tells the media. Rightfully so, I don't know how DW can ignore his awful special teams strategy and his unwillingness to fix it and still let him keep his job.

Mafoofoo 04-25-2012 09:26 PM

This is the guy who traded for and signed Wallin to a 2.65 mil caphit. Anything is possible.

murdock1116 04-25-2012 09:29 PM

If Todd was going to get fired he would have been already.

I think he'll be in the hot seat starting the next season. If the Sharks get off to a slow start he'll be fired.

KpopandHockey 04-25-2012 09:33 PM

As long as Mclellan: realizes overplaying your #1 is bad, stop playing Colin White-like players over better alternative, and gets new assistants I'm okay with trying him out for one more season.

Unfortunately, many of us wanted RW fired after 06-07 (Series loss to Wings), but DW waited one year too late and canned him after 07-08 (Series loss to Stars).

Many of us want TMac fired now, but DW might wait one year too late. :help::help::help:

Sharks fans exhibit Stockholm Syndrome man, I'm telling you.

After the pain from the disappointment clears, people just want to be nice and happy again and give people passes. Until it happens again. And again. And again.

I dunno. I believe Todd will get another chance. Jay Woodcroft was promoted from within and Shaw unfortunately didn't do a good job, either. I think Todd is going to have to present what changes he is going to make, and DW is going to give the green light.

HBSauce 04-25-2012 09:40 PM

If DW doesn't fire the coaching staff I'll be on the fire DW bandwagon soon enough. Good GM but I think we've went as far as we could with him and he makes great star trades but the secondary trades don't work out it seems (various trade deadline acquisitions over the years)

Dusk Soldier 04-25-2012 10:47 PM

So I noticed that DW hasn't made an announcement about firing T-Mac yet. What is he waiting for?

sjshrky27 04-25-2012 10:52 PM

TMac will not be fired this season.
DW will not be fired this season.

accept it, and move on people.

VP and GM 04-26-2012 12:08 AM

Ok, it's part 2 and i'm ready. I'm not ready to blow up the core as we have 2 years with them, i'd just try tweaks to address the problems. This can be done now and before the trade deadline, blowing up the core would take 2-3 years to restructure the team which i just can't do just cause we had a early playoff exit this season.

Problem and solution list;

1) The PK sucks (i told you all so before the deadline) as a result of passive strategy (coaching) and the players (GM and Players).

Solution: Change system/strategy to a more aggressive challenging one, replace assistant coach responsible for system, obtain at lease 1 really good PK person that can play and have speed and quickness (see below).

2) Not enough GF 5 on 5 as a result of lack of scoring depth, we need a 3rd line and or depth players that can really score. I think it's likely that our top 5/6 players were tired/warn our from even making the playoffs and were just not able to produce as a result. I know Havlat was out part of the season, his goals were never replaced during the season. We are not designed to be a stifling D team, we're designed as a very good D team and a team that scores. We were missing 30+- GF this past season to put us where we should have been. Just think how many times the other team scored 1st cause we could not score, playing from behind the game changes. We're a team that has prided it'self on scoring the first goal in recent seasons. This is a problem of the GM for not getting the depth, coaches for not getting enough GF out of the line up as well as players for not producing. I don't generally have a problem with the top 6 forwards or top 4 D production, while none of them had their best seasons generally, they were not their worst either. I think it's depth beyond that on the 3rd line. I also think that some roster players appear to be slow i the new faster NHL, other teams younger players are quicker and or faster resulting in lost one on one battles that we need to win to get the puck for our puck possession offence to work. I also think some players are failing to win 1 on 1 battles - some of them need coaching some are just not big and or quick enough.
(Coaching, Players and the GM all get their share of blame here)

Note: I do not have a problem with team D as our GA was not bad, could have been better if we had a mid pack PK. I don't have a problem with Nemo, i do want him to work on rebound control and positioning - poor guy was not given much GF support.

Solution: Increase scoring depth by adding 2 NHL level players that can score - one a 40-45 pointer, and another as a 50-55 pointer + quickness and strength that can win the puck battles along the boards/in the corners. One of them must be a PK expert, both need to have speed. Increase quickness on D. Replace other assistant coach. Tune offensive system for 5 on 5 GF. Next year roll 3 lines that can score, not the 2 from this past season, this will make it hard to defend against us as well as keep players fresher.

---

Summary/To Do list
- replace assistant coaches, new system on the PK as well as offensive system tuning.
- replace slow players with quicker ones, add 1 a PK expert and another legit/proven scoring depth forward/center. I'd lose/move White, Vandermeer, Murray, Ferriero, Zus and probably Winchester as they are just to slow or not strong enough as players in the new NHL. I'd keep Clowe as he's an animal along the boards and in the corners - he's not a real fast / quick player generally which is why i mention him here, i'd take another like him with some quickness.

Working on possible rosters as we speak.

Overanalyzing players' social lives.

baydrake 04-26-2012 12:23 AM

was lookin' through GVT numbers (http://www.puckprospectus.com/sortable/)

Sharks:
Thornton 12.2 Off/5.0 Def
Couture 12.5/3.2
Pavelski 8.8/5.2
Marleau 8.7/4.5
(McGinn 4.4/2.6) likely skewed due to Colorado stats
Clowe 4.2/2.7
Havlat 3.9/2.4
---
Desjardins 0.3/2.3
Handzus 0.9/1.5
Galiardi 0.1/1.6
Ferriero 0.6/1.0
Winnik -1.1/2.6
Wingels 0.3/0.8
Mitchell -1.0/2.0
Moore -0.2/1.2
Winchester 0.1/0.9
A.Murray -1.0/1.1
McLaren -0.4/0.1
McCarthy -0.7/0.0

Boyle 6.5/6.4
Burns 6.3/5.3
Vlasic 1.5/6.6
Demers 0.7/1.5
---
Vandermeer 0.9/0.8
Braun -0.7/2.2
D.Murray -2.2/2.9
White -1.3/1.2

UFAs to consider?
Joey Crabb 3.8/2.3
Lee Stempniak 3.3/2.1

Brad Stuart 2.2/7.2
Filip Kuba 4.1/5.1 (knows Boyle from Tampa but 35+)
Matt Gilroy 3.2/2.5
Greg Zanon -0.5/3.2

I've switched my stance on D.Jones due to his GVT being low relative to his goals total - seems like a situation where he'll be paid higher than his net impact.

My #1 priority would be locking up Desjardins to a multi-year deal.

Functionally were down a top 4 defenseman. Would take a run at Stuart or Kuba to be a #4, Gilroy or Zanon to be a 5/6. Vandermeer on the cheap may not be a bad 7. Move Murray for a pick.

Stuck with Handzus. Would keep Desjardins, Galiardi, Ferriero, Wingels. Ambivalent about Winnik getting Malhotra money - depends if Handzus can be dumped. Winchester as a 13th?

Logan Couture ($2.875m) / Joe Thornton ($7.000m) / Joe Pavelski ($4.000m)

T.J. Galiardi ($0.735m) / Andrew Desjardins ($0.850m) / Tommy Wingels ($0.725m)
Brad Winchester ($0.750m) /

Marc-Edouard Vlasic ($3.100m) / Brent Burns ($5.760m)
Brad Stuart ($3.800m) / Dan Boyle ($6.667m)

Pavs for a faster wing makes some sense but man do I not want to move the guy :(

I know, i'm actually going to increase my social life, this won't work and i'll be watching classic games, then, i don't want to think about it...

I know very little about GVT. I know what it means superficially, but how is it calculated and which stats go into it?

It's going to be a long, loooong off-season.

And on your roster, how are we getting Voracek? Especially for so cheap, so it can't be an offer sheet.

Mafoofoo 04-26-2012 12:43 AM

Yeah that confused me. How did you acquire Voracek?

I think he's a RFA and the flyers are cap limited... trade of assets -- Murray for example. Pronger may be done and Dougie would be an improvement over Kubina.

Voracek is an amazing player. He's more untouchable than JVR. No way in HELL he gets moved.
