J. Stall looks to have a ceilling of 60 points but he has so many intangibles that he can bring to the table, but he would have to play #2 C minutes.

Who get the boot then? DD? Pleks?

Bergevin said it best yesterday on Le Match.. or L'antichambre or wherever the hell I heard him say it.. (he was everywhere). The only way a deal for the 3rd makes sense, is if we get a player who will be here long term. No certainties that Stall will. Id rather keep the 3rd at all costs anyway.

That would be such an illogical and ass backwards move to make.

First, Staal is nowhere near established as a top center.
Second, why would you willingly give away the chance to draft and develop a 3rd overall pick so that you could acquire a guy who was drafted and developed by another team.

Also, would be a bad deal for the habs, no thanks.

DD gets the boot if Staal comes.

But I don't know if I want Staal or multiple years (including 3 under ELC) of Galchenyuk, Grigorenko or Forsberg. Think I'd go for the latter.

We have a GM now who I think is more intelligent than this.

Staal in Montreal is a broken record we shouldn't try to play anymore.

Well if you do that, you could potentially trade Plekanec for an upgrade on the wing, but you'd have to be careful about Staal's potential raise in the future.

Looking at the top centres this draft, do Galchenyuk and Grigorenko have higher ceilings than Staal?

would like DD to get the boot but Staal plays more of a pleks game.

i'll take pick over staal though. MTL hasn't had a pick this high in ages. it might be worth taking a chance. you can always trade for an established player.

He said that it was a potential trade for the Habs. That it's in talks.

if you can get an established young top 6 player you do it for the 3rd. You go for sure thing vs maybe. Stall is not that top 6 player though so its a moot point

If we had the old CBA rules with FA at age 31, it would make more sense. But since Staal is a UFA in the summer of 2013, and you can NOT negotiate an extension until July 1 2012 (meaning after the draft), there's no way you can take that risk. Staal has zero link to Montreal. Even if he wanted to stay you are looking at probably a 6-7 M salary for a guy who has had health problems. No thanks.

Well, Staal can be considered a good option as a two way 50-60 point center, but the problem, in my opinion, is not that he's not a top 6 two way forward, it's that we really don't need another one of those. Not at center, anyway. We've got pleks already doing admirably in that role and Eller who I think can surpass him. What this team lacks is a true, top flight offensive forward (ideally a center) and this seems like our best shot at finally getting one.

It was a suggestion, which he immediately followed it up by saying he doesn't think the Pens are looking to move Staal and that the more likely candidate to be moved at some point is Malkin

Good to get clarification...and if they are indeed willing to move Malkin, they can have the 3rd. :D

BTW, for those who were pro-McGuire as GM, this is several times now he has suggested dealing the pick or picks/prospects to improve immediately...we dodged a bullet.
