MANITOBA BISONS 2012-13

The Bisons announced their first batch of recruits today. Therefore, it is time to start a thread for next season. If you want a stroll down memory lane, check the 2011-12 Thread. The new players (click names for their Elite Prospects career stats) are:

Paul Ciarelli - centre - Brandon Wheat Kings
- After splitting time with the Blues (MJHL) and Wheat Kings (WHL), he played four full seasons for the Wheaties. He is coming off a 15 goal season.

Brock Sutherland - defence - Calgary Hitmen
- The already stacked Bison D did not really need another blue-chip prospect, but they got one anyway. I guess if the Bisons sign all the defencemen then nobody else will have any. He also split the 2007-08 season between the MJHL and WHL, only with Swan River and Lethbridge. He then spent most of his WHL career with Tri-City before being traded to Calgary during the 2011-12 campaign.

Aaron Lewadniuk - centre - Bakersfield Condors (ECHL)
- He notched 43 goals for Winkler (MJHL) in 2007-08 and then went to Omaha (USHL), Brandon (WHL) for two years, and then bounced around the ECHL for two more years.

Dylan Kelly - forward - Winnipeg Blues (MJHL)
- He is the sole non-WHL grad amongst those announced. He is coming off a 32 goal season for the Blues.

Tyler Wiwchar - defence - Winnipeg Saints (MJHL)
- He was not amongst the players announced. Elite Prospects has him as a November transfer. The MJHL announced him as a U of M student and scholarship winner. However, he continued to play for the Saints. Stay tuned.

AWARD-WINNING RETURNEES

Blair Macaulay and Jeremy Schappert won two awards each in 2011-12 and are coming back for another year. In the CW awards story Macaulay won the MVP and Schappert was the top defenceman. Then in the CIS awards story they were both named 2nd team all-stars.

GONE PRO

Travis Mealy went to the Tulsa Oilers (CHL) and Mike Hellyer went to the Idaho Steelheads (ECHL) before going to the Texas Brahmas (CHL).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...-condensed.gif The CUP ran a story asking Is the University Cup format too short? IMO, no. However, it could be improved by adopting a straight knockout format.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg The UBC Thunderbirds announced that they have signed Neil Manning from the Vancouver Giants.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...berta-50px.jpg The Evil Monkeys announced that they are going to the GM format. Head coach Stan Marple becomes GM and a new head coach is being sought. The story is also at Boxscore News.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg The Regina Cougars announced that Todd Johnson will be their next coach. He comes over from Kootenay (WHL). The story is at the CW site and the CIS site.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...o-mustangs.jpg The Urban Cowboys are down a coach as Clarke Singer is going on sabbatical.

Glad to see the 2012-13 thread up and running Hollywood. The Bisons are looking very strong already for this coming season.

The recruits so far are good players. What they need is more numbers up front. Lockerby, Flynn, and Bestland did well as defencemen playing at forward. But if they had injuries to forwards they were screwed.

IAE, the D will be solid, if not the best in the CIS then very close.

I think Coach Sirant has a number of offensive recruits seriously considering the U of M.

the Current Bisons Line Up

I thought it would be interesting to take a quick look at what the Bison line up looks like after the first wave of recruits.

Players not coming back for 2012-13

Jared Walker (5 years)
Mike Hellyer (5 years)
Chris Benias (5 years)
Travis Mealy (5 years)
Patrick Flynn (graduated)
Myles Rumsey (graduated)
Jessie Deckert (graduated)
Chad Erb (Police Academy)
Jordan Davis (left school)
Neal Prokop (left the program to focus on school)

10 players to replace.

Returning Players and Recruits

Blair Macaulay
Tyler Dittmer
Ian Duval
Matthew Lowry
Del Cowan
Brendan Rowinski
Darren Bestland
Austin Lauder
Paul Ciarelli
Dylan Kelly
Aaron Lewadniuk (red shirting)
10 eligible forwards - need 3 or 4 more forwards

Jeremy Schappert
Dane Crowley
Tyler Schmidt
Travis Bobbee
Brandon Lockerby
Brock Sutherland
6 eligible defencemen - need 2 or 3 more dmen

Joe Caligiuri
Mark Friesen
2 eligible goalies - need 1 goalie

this team looks very solid. A couple high end forwards, some grit and leadership to replace Hellyer and Benias up front and a couple of strong dmen will really help. Caligiuri and Friesen are good goalies but it would be nice to add another top goalie to the mix.

Manitobans available as 1991 birth years

the last post caused me to wonder who the top 1991 Manitoba-born players might be to fill the holes on the Bison roster (the Bisons love to give Manitoba players the chance to play in their home province). Off the top of my head here are some of the players that might be recruited by the Bisons.

WHL

Forwards
Brendan Shinnimin (signed NHL deal, not available, too bad)
Adam Hughesman (top recruit, may get pro deal - Adam would fit in very well with the Bisons)
Mason Wilgosh (tremendous leader, hard working kid - would be a natural replacement for Hellyer or Benias)
James Henry (tremendous leader, great competitor, good offensive potential - could be a future Bisons captain)
Jesse Paradis (solid two way player)

Defencemen
Corbin Baldwin (monster dman, may get pro deal)

Goalies
Deven Dubyk (solid goalie - played a lot with Red Deer this past year)

MJHL

Forwards
Derek Gingera (high scoring Junior A player, small and fast)
Blake Chartier (solid player with good hands)
David Conrad (played 3 years in the Dub before finishing his junior career in the MJ)
Craig Scott (great finish to a Junior A career with a strong playoff run with the Saints, led the MJ in playoff scoring)

Defencemen
Dylan Heide (solid high scoring Jr A dman, good student who won a major Junior A scholarship, currently studying at the U of M)
Paul Bonar (very good Jr A dman)
Paul Sohor (had 3 years in the Dub before playing with Selkirk Steelers as a 20 year old, brings toughness and a bit of offence)
Drew Scurfield (solid dman)
Tyler Wiwchar (also won a major Junior A scholarship, already studying at the U of M)

Goalies
Matt Krahn (all star MJHL goalie, backup with the Allan Cup National Championship team)

this is a very good crop to choose from but other than Baldwin and maybe a couple of the MJ dmen not a lot of size. Some of the MJHL players are already students at the U of M.

no pressure!?
ched, this is a great list I love it! I can now follow and see where these guys might end up! Hopefully alot come home to the home of the JETS. Unfortunately a list like this, this early in the campaign, just puts pressure on coach mike to get em, maybe he is done? But more importantly it just encourages the UBC guy and CAlgary guys to phone them 8 times a week instead of 7, keeping them low on the radar is what sirant would prefer!?! these guys are nuts i am told the way they are unrelenting! worse than the telemarketers that call at 605pm each day they are out of control i am told by people around here!:nono:

Hollywood3 05-14-2012 08:15 PM

There are always a load of MJHL grads who would love to crack the Bison roster. The team has not recruited as many of those guys in recent years. I would think that this year would be a great chance to take in a couple of MJHL defencemen and look at them as 2 year projects.

At forward, they definitely need at least one more WHL grad. But after using d-men as a 4th line last year they could do at least as well with a 4th line of MJHL grads.

I am not worried about the goaltending. They have two returning players who will get all the starts. The 3rd stringer will be there for practices and in case of injury.

Nathan Green has been reported to have redshirted last year with the Bisons - could he be on the roster for this year? no announcement so maybe not. If he is he adds tremendous speed and a 24 goal WHL season as a 19 year old.
12-13 eligible forwards - need 2 or 3 more forwards, depends on whether Bestland will play forward or defence, my hunch is that he will move back on defence and open up another spot up front. This is an explosive looking group with some grit, character and leadership. I honestly can't remember when the Bisons were deeper on paper. We could still use another sniper to provide some natural goal scoring. Adam Hughesman would look very good on this team.

Jeremy Schappert
Dane Crowley
Tyler Schmidt
Travis Bobbee
Brandon Lockerby
Brock Sutherland
Corbin Baldwin
this gives us 7 very very solid dmen - with a bit of everything - offence, puck-moving, size, shut down capability, toughness. wow. If Myles Rumsey wasn't graduating this would be an extremely impressive group. In fact it already is. Last year Coach Sirant had 10 dmen on the roster. Typically the Bisons carry 8 - Bestland? Wiwchar? Bonar? someone else?

Joe Caligiuri
Mark Friesen
Deven Dubyk
3 eligible goalies - looking very good.

let's do a bit of an update on this list:

WHL

Forwards
Brendan Shinnimin PRO DEAL WITH PHOENIX
Adam Hughesman STILL AVAILABLE
Mason Wilgosh STILL AVAILABLE
James Henry HAS REPORTEDLY COMMITED TO THE BISONS
Jesse Paradis HAS COMMITTED TO THE BISONS

Defencemen
Corbin Baldwin HAS COMMITTED TO THE BISONS

Goalies
Deven Dubyk HAS COMMITTED TO THE BISONS

MJHL

Forwards
Derek Gingera NO UPDATE
Blake Chartier NO UPDATE
David Conrad NO UPDATE
Craig Scott NO UPDATE

Defencemen
Dylan Heide HAS COMMITTED TO THE UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO
Paul Bonar NO UPDATE
Paul Sohor NO UPDATE
Drew Scurfield NO UPDATE
Tyler Wiwchar NO UPDATE

Goalies
Matt Krahn NO UPDATE

Coach Sirant is doing a great job locking up the best Manitoba players - I can't help but think Hughesman and Wilgosh are seriously considering Manitoba, and with all the recent activity and signings they would have a lot of talent to play with for the next 5 years.

I am always interested in rumours. But until something is posted I consider it to be just a rumour. Even if the Bisons don't make an announcement, most junior teams post where their grads are going.

Returning Players (8)
Blair Macaulay
Tyler Dittmer
Ian Duval
Matthew Lowry
Del Cowan
Brendan Rowinski
Darren Bestland
Austin Lauder

Recruits (3)

Schedule Announced

UPDATE

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ed-nowords.jpg The C.W. announced their schedule on June 13th. A pdf format schedule is out but has yet to be uploaded to the conference web site. But the Bisons schedule page has been updated. No non-conference games have been added. The release is also at Boxscore News and the CIS site. In addition to the Bisons, there were also news releases from UBC, Regina, Lethbridge, and Calgary.

The Bisons start the season in Edmontown against the Primates on Sept 28-29. Home games are:
Oct. 12-13 Saskatchewan
Nov. 9-10 Lethbridge
Nov. 23-24 Regina
Nov. 30-Dec 1 Alberta
Jan. 11-12 Mount Royal
Jan. 18-19 Calgary
Feb. 1-2 UBC
Feb. 15-17 Quarter-Finals (6 @ 3 and 5 @ 4)
Feb. 22-24 Semi-Finals
Mar. 1-3 Final

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...isons-50px.gif The Bisons and CJOB announced a partnership. Details are sketchy but it sounds like live radio coverage will be limited to football for now. Still, coverage is a good thing. There have been no announcements of further recruits to those announced on May 9th. But the rumour mill includes:

Corbin Baldwin - defenceman - Spokane Chiefs (WHL)
- He's a 6'5" defenceman with four years in the WHL behind him. He would be another solid addition to the defence core.

Jason Henry - left wing - Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL)
- Most of his WHL career was with the Vancouver Giants. Last season he combined for 16 goals and 71 points split between Vancouver and Moose Jaw. His high was 21 goals. So two good forward recruits, but they could really use a centre.

Jesse Paradis - left wing - Saskatoon Blades (WHL)
- With the team seemingly building another solid blueline, a few good forwards are in order. Paradis had 15 goals and 49 points for the Blades, so while not a sniper he should add some skill up front. The Saskatoon Star-Phoenix has a story on this:
Quote:

"We keep tabs of our Manitoba players that have left our province to play in the Western Hockey League,” Sirant said, noting he first approached Blades head coach and general manager Lorne Molleken about Paradis in December.

“As Lorne agreed, we both thought he did a real good job with the Blades. Jesse’s a solid player. He’s a hard-working guy that is a good two-way forward.”

Paradis was picked up off of waivers by the Blades last September after being released by the Moose Jaw Warriors just before the start of the season.

The 6-foot-1, 190-pound left-winger set career highs with 15 goals and 49 points while playing in all 72 games. He was named the Blades’ most sportsmanlike player after registering 32 penalty minutes.

Paradis was key member of the team’s penalty kill and was counted on defensively.

Sirant believes Paradis’s “versatility” will allow him to compete for third- and fourth-line minutes.

“All players coming from the Western league, it’s an adjustment coming into Canada West,” he said. “We expect Jesse to make that transition and make a good contribution for us in his first year.”

The university will welcome Paradis into the fold next week when its recruitment class is officially released.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg The Tweety-Birds have had three announcements covering four new recruits: Joe Antilla from the Kootenay Ice (WHL), Linden Saip and Jessi Hilton (from Surrey of the BCJHL and Sherwood Park of the AJHL respectively), and Dillon Wagner from the Seattle Tweety-Birds (WHL).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...berta-50px.jpg The Evil Monkeys announced that their new head organ grinder is Ian Herbers, formerly of the Milwaukee Admirals. The Boxscore News, CIS Site, and the C.W. Site also have the story.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...idge-50pxw.jpg The H0rny Ones announced the recruiting of three WHL grads: goaltender Damien Ketlo (Lethbridge Hurricanes) and defencemen Cason Machacek (Seattle Thunderbirds) and Hayden Rintoul (Victoria Royals).

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0pxh-white.gif Also, the OUA announced their schedule.

Ched 06-15-2012 10:57 AM

James Henry is primarily a centre so he should fit in very nicely.

Some rumours confirmed

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...isons-50px.gif The Bisons announced three more recruits, all of whom are Manitoba boys:

Craig Scott - forward - Winnipeg Saints (MJHL)
- He's a smaller forward who's best numbers came in the Saints' unlikely playoff run this spring (21 points in 16 games). I had not heard his name mentioned.

Jason Henry - left wing - Moose Jaw Warriors (WHL)
- He was reported in my last post and has now been confirmed.

Deven Dubyk - goaltender - Red Deer Rebels (WHL)
- There is no doubt that Dubyk is a quality prospect. But with Joe Caligiuri and Mark Friesen returning there is quite a crowd in the Bison goal. My guess is that one will be a #3 whilst the other two split duties.

Ched 06-28-2012 07:33 PM

4 for 4

Well Hollywood. It is official, Baldwin and Paradis are Bisons now.

http://gobisons.ca/index.php?page=news&id=2360

Just to speculate a bit, i really like the lineup that Manitoba will ice. Perhaps it will look something like this:

Dittmer
DuVal
Macaulay

Rowinski
Henry
Lowry

Paradis
Ciarelli
Cowan

Kelly
Scott
Green

Lauder

Rumours Confirmed

UPDATE

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...isons-50px.gif The Bisons confirmed that two more players named in my June 15th post have committed, namely Corbin Baldwin and Jesse Paradis. This gives the Bisons 24 recruits and returning players by my count. The team site's roster page has taken down the 2011-12 roster but has yet to upload the 2012-13 roster, so maybe check back later today.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ed-nowords.jpg The CW's schedule and results page has not been updated so as to include non-conference/exhibition/pre-season games since the league schedule was released. However, various teams (not including the Bisons) do have some games added. Regina and Alberta give us this:
Sept 4 Alberta @ Augustana
Sept 6 Augustana @ Alberta
Sept 7 Alberta @ Calgary
Sept 8 Calgary @ Alberta
Sept 14 Tournament at Regina
Sept 14 SAIT @ Alberta
Sept 15 Alberta @ SAIT
Sept 21-22 Brick Invitational at Edmonton
Sept 21 Regina @ Manitoba (7:00 pm)
Sept 22 Regina @ Manitoba (2:00 pm)

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg UBC continues to add new names with the announcement that they have a commitment from Scott McDonald, a WHL grad who finished his junior career in the USHL.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...berta-50px.jpg The Evil Monkeys announced that Brett Ferguson is going to the Greasers camp, assuming they have one. Still no announcements of recruits from them, nor from Bedrock nor Saskatown for that matter.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...avier-50px.jpg Maybe there are no players left in Alberta after St. F-X did their recruiting. Boxscore News reports a recruiting class of one Ontarioer and five Saudi Albertans for the Ron Jeremys.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg The BCIHL has a nice player commitments page, which all leagues should have at this time of year. Selkirk College has 18 new players. Really. They were 5-19 last year but that's a lot of new guys. The league also announced a new playoff format. Up to now they had a 5-team page style tournament. They will still have 5 teams in the playoffs but will have best-of-three series now.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...acac-50x50.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1.../rdc-50x50.jpg The ACAC announced that the Red Deer College Kings will be rejoining their league in 2013-14. They folded in 2004.

On paper, the team looks very good. The question is how it will come together. Look at Calgary last year.

However, both the North Dakota and Bemdiji State schedule pages have the Bisons listed as opponents on the weekend of October 6-7. Since North Dakota can no longer use the Fighting Sioux moniker they have to revert to a letters-only logo for now. But since everybody likes beavers the Bemdiji logo is staying put.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...0condensed.jpg http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...er-50x50-1.jpg Also, the UBC schedule page has a home-and-home series with Simon Fraser listed for September 21-22. They played at the Christmas break last year. The Tweety-Birds will also scoot down to Denver for 3 games in 3 days against Denver, Colorado College, and Air Force. Calgary used to make a trip like that.

The regular season will start on September 27-29. Adding the foregoing to the stuff I gathered last time from Regina and Alberta and we now have this exhibition schedule:

Sept 4 Alberta @ Augustana
Sept 6 Augustana @ Alberta
Sept 7 Alberta @ Calgary
Sept 8 Calgary @ Alberta
Sept 14 Tournament at Regina - teams tba
Sept 14 SAIT @ Alberta
Sept 15 Alberta @ SAIT
Sept 21-22 Brick Invitational at Edmonton - teams tba
Sept 21 Regina @ Manitoba (7:00 pm)
Sept 21 Simon Fraser @ UBC
Sept 22 Regina @ Manitoba (2:00 pm)
Sept 22 UBC @ Simon Fraser
Oct 6 Manitoba @ North Dakota (time tba)
Oct 6 UBC @ Denver
Oct 7 Manitoba @ Bemidji State (5:07 pm)
Oct 7 UBC @ Colorado College
Oct 8 UBC @ Air Force

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...tian-50x50.jpg Last season's rumours about Laurentian getting back into hockey have been confirmed in both the CIS and OUA websites.

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...caps-50x50.jpg The Jets signed UNB grad Hunter Tremblay for the Ice Caps. He was with the Oklahoma City Barons in the Oiler system last year.

Why don't the Bears ever play NCAA teams?

Historically, Alberta and Saskatchewan were the top two teams and virtually never got a US team willing to play. Also, none of the US teams ever come here for a road trip. Bob Stauffer in past years posted about offers made by Alberta to US teams which were declined. I got into CIS hockey during the last NHL lockout and since then I believe Alberta and Sask have each played US teams once.

As far as road trips are concerned it costs a lot of $$$ to get NCAA team up here. UNB does it but they are the rare exception.

Still I'm surprised they don't go down to the US for some games. A good chance to get some games in against superior teams instead of playing against SAIT again.

There are two issues.

First, I am not sure whether Alberta or Sask have sought opponents or not in recent years. I had heard in the past that they had problems.

Second, it is very strange that US hockey teams refuse to travel but their basketball and volleyball teams come here every year. In basketball, the NCAA is miles ahead and most games are wipe-outs. In volleyball, the CW is the best league around and the best NCAA teams get their best competition against the CW. So it all makes no sense.

Macaulay gets invite from Jets

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...isons-50px.gif http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...ogo_normal.jpg Bison all-star Blair Macaulay has been announced as an invitee to the Jets' development camp. The players hit the ice Monday and continue all week at the Iceplex. Apparently they had 500 fans this afternoon. Maybe the camp will help him improve on his 23 goals in 28 games in 2011-12!

http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...berta-50px.jpg The Evil Monkey's announced a couple of new primates have been recruited. The story is also at The Boxscore News. The two feces-throwing sub-humans recruited are Rhett Rachinski (a forward) and Brennan Yadlowski (a defenceman). No word yet on their other recruits.
http://i18.photobucket.com/albums/b1...aby-150h-1.jpg This monkey won't turn evil until he gets his stupid yellow hat.
