NHL stars who would be better and worse on the big ice

Better: Malkin, Crosby, Tavares, Skinner, perhaps Kessel. Not sure about Stamkos.

Worse: Phaneuf and some other defensemen who are mostly positioners than skaters.

Saku11 05-12-2012 05:43 AM

Better:Nash.

Dr Grant 05-12-2012 06:06 AM

Much better: Kovalchuk.

SoupNazi 05-12-2012 06:28 AM

Better: Kovalchuck, Malkin, Stamkos

BubbaBoot 05-12-2012 07:03 AM

Better: Tyler Seguin.
Worse: Hal Gill.

Sureves 05-12-2012 07:05 AM

Better: Karlsson

I feel the sedins would dominate on open ice, they just prey on empty spaces to make magic, 120 points, scoring would increase for everyone tho

newham89 05-12-2012 12:03 PM

Stamkos would be much better. He can always find space in the offensive zone to gets shots off now. With bigger ice there's more space. Simple. Plus his speed would be better utilized.

Granlund2Pulkkinen* 05-12-2012 12:04 PM

I prefer bigger ice.

Hell I wouldn't mind if they used a bandy sized sheet of ice

DanZ 05-12-2012 12:26 PM

Better: Europeans
Worse: North Americans

I disagree about Crosby. I think the NHL rinks suit him perfectly, and that he'd be less effective on the larger surface.

Jbow would be much better on the big ice where he could get away with playing less physical than most and would allow him to utilize his speed.

North Americans did pretty well in 2002. Likewise, a decent portion of the 2006 Finnish and Swedish teams played most of their careers on NHL ice.

I think the best players will excel regardless of ice size. Prospects can adjust from CHL (more qualcomp than ice size), SEL, etc. to NHL. I'm willing to bet the NHL could play very well on big ice.

He would have to play physical in the first place for this to be a true statement.

From the Oilers: I think RNH and Hall would improve significantly on a larger ice surface. Ebs and Gagner might improve a little. Everyone else would probably get a bit worse.

Diamondillium 05-12-2012 02:41 PM

Better: anyone who can skate well

Worse: anyone who can't skate well

billybudd 05-12-2012 03:27 PM

Better: Anyone who skates really well and carries the puck.

Worse: Anyone with below average mobility and anyone whose game is primarily board-based.

You people are looking at the question wrong guys like Stamkos are so great because they can do in small spaces what most need big spaces for. If everybody had more space then Stamkos(as an example) losses a ton of value.

I actually think Karlsson's game is better on the smaller ice surface. Mostly because his game is so much about playing agressively at the offensive blue line, something he can do better on the smaller ice surface since it isn't as wide as the bigger surface but still has greater zone length. The wider surface would force him to fall back earlier which hurts his offense.

Danish Pastry 05-12-2012 05:01 PM

the entire sharks team would be worse...

some players better but the team as a whole would suck...

He is decently physical but not overly physical like alot of top shutdown defensemen. The fact there is more room in the big ice would help him.

Kaner Coffee 05-12-2012 05:38 PM

From the Hawks:
Better: Kane, Keith, Leddy, Stahlberg
Worse: Seabrook, Olsen, Bickell

Hmm.

NoNecksCurse 05-12-2012 05:53 PM

hal gill would by far be the worst....

forsbergavs32 05-12-2012 06:14 PM

I think Duchene would excel on a bigger rink cause of his skating ability and carrying the puck himself

plus more room for his danglez :help:
