Mr. Canucklehead 05-15-2012 01:44 PM

So is it Canada vs. USA if the USA hangs on to beat Switzerland, Canada vs. Slovakia if the USA loses? Or is there a different thing at work here?

US win in Regulation: FIN-US
US Win in OT: FIN-CAN
US loss in Reg: I'm drawing a blank. CAN-US I think
US OT Loss: US-CAN

Correct me if I'm wrong.

Is it 3 points for a regulation win, 2 points for an overtime win, 1 point for an overtime loss?

AFAIK Yes.

So that just leaves the question of what the tie-breakers are. Finland and Slovakia are tied in wins, losses and points. Slovakia is +1 on Finland in terms of goal differential, but Finland is slotted ahead? I'm confused.

USA need win in regulation to play against FIN...if they lose only one point they are in QF against CAN...they will have only 15pts as SVK but then it comes to mutual game which won SVK so they will stay on 3rd

koyo 05-15-2012 02:08 PM

possible results

If USA win after OT/shootouts, then all three teams have 15 points. Then based on the score among the three of them, USA would be 2nd, Slovakia 3rd, and Finland 4th. But looking at the score board between USA and Switzerland it is very unlikely.

Not really. If USA will win in overtime, they will have 15 points. SVK and FIN have also 15 points.

Should three or more teams be tied on points, then a tie breaking formula will be applied as follows, creating a sub-group amongst the tied teams. This process will continue until only two teams remain tied. The game between the two remaining tied teams would then be the determining tie-breaker as the game between these two teams could not end as a tie.

Step 1:
Taking into consideration the games between each of the tied teams, a sub-group is created applying the points awarded in the direct games amongst the tied teams from which the teams are then ranked accordingly.

Step 2:
Should the teams still remain tied then the better goal difference in the direct games amongst the tied teams will be decisive.

So, :
SVK beated USA 4:2
SVK lost to FIN 0:1
USA beated FIN 5:0

Step 1: - all 3 teams got 3 points.

Step 2 - USA got 9:2, SVK got 4:3 and FIN got 1:5

So, it would be:

1. Canada
2. USA
3. SVK
4. FIN

Novak Djokovic 05-15-2012 02:16 PM

Well, US is going to win in regulation so we now have Canada-Slovakia as the quarterfinal.

When it´s just two teams with the same number of points, the result of mutual game is the tie-breaker. Finland won against Slovakia, thus they are ranked ahead of Slovakia.

The winner of CAN-SVK plays the winner of SWE-CZE. The winner of USA-FIN plays the winner of RUS-NOR.

Semi-final pairings: Winner 1H-4H vs Winner 2S-3S, Winner 1S-4S vs Winner 2H-3H. Both semi-final games will take place in Helsinki.

I really hope TSN will be re-broadcasting the game at noon or so.

Lol, first you say that ANYTHING can happen.....and then you go on pretty much saying that Norway has absolutely no chance to reach the SF....

Norway´s chances aren´t too big on PAPER, but neither are Slovakia´s (it´s no accident that we only ever won against Canada once at the WC, ten years ago). The way both teams have played at this tourney, the chance of Norwy winning that one game is not smaller than Slovakia´s is.
