Damien Brunner to sign with Detroit

Topscorer of the Swiss league last year, at the IHWC topscorer of the Swiss team with 7 points. Not drafted. Very skilled RW, very fast.

There are several teams who want to sign him. Brunner himself confirmed an contract offer by the Minnesota Wilds. Steve Yzerman confirmed in an interview with a Swiss newspaper that he also already made an offer for Brunner. Several other teams are rumoured to have interest (Pens?).

Coming to the leafs obviously :)

Awhile back, a Swiss reporter said on twitter that the Penguins were the early front runners to sign Brunner, now it remains to be seen if they still are front runners, but a few months ago they were.

That was on December 8, 2011.

Please!

Even though a lame site said he had signed with the habs (which he didn't, cause that site is ******** ) Habs probably have interest in him and with Diaz on the team it could help their cause.

Metropolit pimped out Montreal to Diaz. He can do it again.

we don't even know if he's good enough for the NHL yet, so trading a guy to make space doesn't seem smart.

Pierce Hawthorne 05-15-2012 03:15 PM

I think he'll fit in well next in the NHL next year(if he moves over).

Would like to see the Avs make an offer for him, but I highly doubt it happens.

jonas2244 05-15-2012 03:37 PM

He will move over, that's for sure, he said that. He'll decide in the coming weeks to which team he'll go.

Captain Hook 05-15-2012 03:39 PM

I watched him today against the USA. He seems pretty skilled. You never know if it will translate to smaller rinks and NHL competition. Worth a shot though.

Dragon Priest 05-15-2012 04:21 PM

I was impressed with him today. Thought he really stood out on the Swiss team. Some mentioned the Pens might be interested. If I were the Pens I would be interested, I think he would fit well and really have a chance to blossom. But I don't think the Pens will sign him. 1.) He is no sure thing in the NHL. So he is sort of a risk. 2.) Pens once experimented with a guy named Janne Pesonen and it didn't work out so well. He never showed any flashes, granted he was never given a legit chance in the top 6. The Pens might not go down this route again. 3.) Another team will probably offer more money. While I don't see the Pens acquiring him, I do think he would be a good fit.

If Shero never wants to take a chance on another European UFA because of Pesonen, he should be fired immediatly.

Luckily, I'm sure he doesn't think that way.

chasespace 05-15-2012 04:39 PM

I would love for him to sign with Tampa

Stjonnypopo 05-15-2012 05:43 PM

Every team would love to get a cheap low risk player with good hands.

I hope he comes to Montreal to join his buddy Diaz.

LyricalLyricist 05-15-2012 05:58 PM

There was a rumour montreal offered him a contract but it wasn't a credible source. May be true, may not be.

With PA Parenteau currently a(n) UFA, one would have to wonder if Garth Snow wouldn't be hoping Streit and Nino could 'coerce' Brunner into giving the Isles a try.

Still, Snow hasn't once gone the "pick up a guy who had a good season in Europe" route since becoming a GM.

Thought this too, with PA possibly leaving and our little Swiss connection, he may be a cheap replacement, not that he would be cheap but cheaper than PA.

It's a no risk signing. Every GM should be after players like this. IF it works out, then you got an effective player for free. If it doesn't, then send him to the minors or trade him. He cost you nothing other than some money (and damn little at that) and you lost nothing. Guys coming to the NHL cost next to nothing as they're NOT proven. If they won't go to the minors, and want to go back home, then you suspend him (so you're not paying him) and let him go back home.

As to why he might sign with the Pens... Crosby and Malkin need another top 6 winger... not saying he can foot the bill, however if he's going to succeed in the NHL, playing with an elite forward is likely the best chance you'll get to put up points.

CF Punk 05-15-2012 07:53 PM

Hmm. 26 years old too. Can definitely see why there would be teams lining up to give him a shot. Love how the Swiss have slowly become a hotbed of talent.

Captain Hook 05-15-2012 07:53 PM

I hope the Pens get him, but I really don't trust Bylsma to develop the guy if he needs any development. It's just not Bylsma's strength as a coach. Brunner will have to be a legit, ready-made top 6 winger from the time he shows up or he has no chance with Bylsma, imo.

While I'd like him on the Pens, he'd probably get more minutes in Tampa.

Why would you trade Kennedy? If Brunner doesn't pan out, then you've just created 2 holes in the line-up that some rookie or god forbid...Craig Adams, has to fill.

I'd like to see Brunner with the Pens, have for over a year now, but with how Shero does things, I doubt it. He seems to be against signing Euro FA's after the whole Pesonen thing, which is pretty stupid, 1 failed experiment shouldn't deter you from trying again, he's been missing out on several prospects that could help.

In any case, with how Brunner plays, he'd be better off being tried with Sid than Staal.
