“Any time you get an opportunity to be a head coach, you’re interested,” Berube told CSNWashington.com on Tuesday. “My situation is good here. No one has contacted me about it. We’ll see what happens.”

Berube, 46, and Hunter, 51, played together with the Capitals from 1993-99 and remain good friends. Berube said the two talked often during the season and he was impressed with the progress Hunter made in his six months behind the Capitals bench.

“It was tough for him,” Berube said. “It took time for him to get them to play the way he wanted, but the results came out at the end.”

Berube said coaching the Capitals is something Hunter “truly wanted to do,” but said he was not surprised to see him return to London, Ontario, where his family operates a successful farming business and junior hockey team.

Berube returned to the Flyers as an assistant coach in 2008 and has spent the past three seasons under head coach Peter Laviolette.

Berube is believed to have one more year remaining on his contract with the Flyers. He played two seasons under Capitals general manager George McPhee from 1997-99, but said he has not spoken with the McPhee and is unaware of the Capitals’ timeline on hiring a coach.

They better not take chief away from us. Damn caps.

If he gets it, good for him.

I've heard Larry Robinson may be interested in becoming a head coach again. I'm sure that depends entirely on his health however.

good for him

I'm hoping they hire Larry Robinson away from NJ.

if Berube gets hired in Washington good for him. No way would I ever want to stop an assistant from getting a head coaching gig

I would hope that's how every single organization is run.

Berube and Ovechkin. That would be pretty hilarious.

DrinkFightFlyers 05-23-2012 07:41 AM

I was hoping Berube would eventually take Lavy's job. Not saying Lavy is to be or should be fired, but we all know he isn't going to be around forever.

If Berube leaves, I wonder if there is any chance we could get a guy like Tom Renney to fill in as assistant. Could help teach out forwards how to play D

FreshPerspective 05-23-2012 09:21 AM

Why doesn't anybody want Kevin McCarthy...:sarcasm:

Spongolium* 05-23-2012 01:29 PM

ahh man, The chief is awesome. Good for him if he gets it though.

bp spec 05-23-2012 03:30 PM

Don't want to lose him. But it's a good chance for him.

BringBackStevens 05-23-2012 03:41 PM

I think I am missing why any one would want berube as a head coach.

No. Promote from within doesn't work here.

If Berube leaves, I wonder if they'll bring up Kjell Samuelsson. He's paid long since his dues.

I've been wondering that as well. Kjell has been with the org for what... 6? 7 years?

This might be a little controversial, but what does Berube add to that staff that can't be replaced? I would say Mullen is the more important assistant coach because of his work with the powerplay. It'll be good if he gets his shot at a head coaching gig, but I won't lose any sleep over it, unless someone knows something that we don't know about his influence on the team.

sobrien 05-23-2012 09:53 PM

I think Washington would as likely to take Oates from NJ over Robinson, and more likely than Berube, imo.

SolidSnakeUS 05-23-2012 10:32 PM

If he did get the job, what would, lets say, Paterson, offer to us if he became the Flyers assistant coach?
