ORIGINAL BRUNNER THREAD:

Hello everybody!

There is a lot of speculation in Switzerland around Damien Brunner. Some of them say that the Penguins could be interested in him.
It seems kind of legit, since Brunner is a RW, but still... the Pens already have more than enough offence.

Brunner finished the regular season as the "NLA Topscorer" with 60pts in 45GP. In the playoffs, he finished 3rd with the same amount of points (14) as the 1st in 9GP (1st: 14GP). Means he has the highest PPG in the PO.

I'm not really sure what I should think about that. Yes, Brunner's talented. But he has to change from the NLA to the NHL and I don't really know how his game transists to the smaller rink AND bigger D-men, since he's only around 5'11" (as far as I remember).

What do you guys think?

Yeah. Someone claimed we were the early favorites to sign him a while back. Not sure if that's changed. We'll see. We can always use another winger.

Some of the stuff he's doing in that video won't be able to be pulled off in the NHL. Also he's 26 years old, so why isn't he in the NHL already?

It would be a low risk signing since I can't see him being offered that much money, but I don't think we need him.

He had some serious issues with his coach while he was playing in Kloten, so he never really got the chance to tear it up until 2008, when he was traded to Zug.
It seems like he already had offers from clubs in the NHL, but wanted to stay in Switzerland, since he just came back from an injury.

I think he's worth giving a 1 year contract, at the least he should be able to put up decent numbers in the AHL.

Not really, 48pim in the regular season. 14x2' / 2x10' (comparison: Top 10 in the league are between 75pim and 112pim)

If we do sign him, it will likely be on a two way deal and if he doesn't make the team, he will go to WBS or back to Europe, don't know how good this guy is.

The first thing that stands out to me in this video is this player has an incredibly deceptive release. He's not disguising when he's going to shoot; he's disguising where, and he's really, really, really good at it. Low stick, high glove, high stick...can't tell before the puck leaves his stick.

The second thing that stands out is these defenses are giving him looks he would never get outside the current playoff series or a game against Winnipeg.

Penguins should be interested in Brunner, but I can't really tell if he'd be effective or not because he's being defended in ways he would not be in the NHL.

He's a decent passer with a good vision, but his big strength is, as already mentioned, his release.

The rumor has apparently been going on long enough that I'd have to believe that there's some credence to it. Brunner isn't going to be handed a top six role, but he'll probably be given a chance to make the team as a 13th forward if he does sign.

I never thought Pesonen got a fair shot with the Pens.
