"The Campbell Trophy is Still In My Trunk" Tim Leiweke

Great interview from Tim Leiweke, especially what happened to the Campbell Conference Trophy and a lot more.

Leiweke dropped a few bombs in there:

*Mentions how Kovalchuk used the Kings in negotiations.
*He had a guitar signed by The Eagles that was given as a gift to Brad Richards when they made a big pitch to sign him last summer.
*Leiweke mentions that the next person to get a statue outside Staples Center will be Jon Quick if he wins a Cup, then mentions he has a feeling he's also going to get a big new contract.

I guess we should anticipate the Kings to sign Quick to a long term extension after July 1.

Lieweike gave Quick a big hug on the way to the dressing room.

KingPurpleDinosaur 05-23-2012 07:22 PM

good for him. He really feels onboard with the Kings. Weird he calls his boss "Mr. Anschultz"

DocWest 05-23-2012 07:23 PM

I love seeing Lieweike this excited about the Kings. It means great things for us.

Did Richards give the guitar back? Id feel like such a dick if i accepted a unique item like that from a team i didn't pick to play for

If not, we should make signs for Games 3 and 4. That is, if they Rangers even get to the Finals.

These guys aren't like us. Top end guitars can be bought out of the spare change in their trunk. If you live in a world where people give cars as gifts, I don't think you'd think twice about picking up a signed guitar.

I'm surprised that expensive gifts are allowed during the UFA process. Seems like it could easily escalate to cap-circumventing offers. What's stopping you from buying the guy a house?

Or some hookers and blow. It's a good bargaining chip, but it doesn't seem to be an issue for owners with deep pockets. They flew Kovalchuk out on what I'm sure was a private charter with an all expenses paid trip and stay at a five-star hotel. And I bet Kovalchuk milked as many perks as possible before getting every penny out of New Jersey. Hell, Terry Murray even paid for his coffee!

kingsfan28 05-23-2012 08:50 PM

I love how the players didn't even want the trophy on the plane.

Telos 05-23-2012 09:04 PM

Robitaille deserves the statue most.

He's always been excited about the Kings.

Truth is, he didn't know much about hockey until Dean sort of educated him on how to build a hockey club.

Moses Doughty 05-23-2012 09:15 PM

Well, Richards DID get a nice guitar I guess

TonySCV 05-23-2012 09:33 PM

That conference trophy story was absolutely hilarious.

That would be his 3rd Campbell Conference Trophy if you count this one along with 1993 with the Kings and 2002 with Detroit.

JBernierFan 05-23-2012 09:33 PM

I loved this interview. For all the flack he gets here, he's always been behind the Kings. I saw someone retweet a picture his wife tweeted today with the trophy now sitting in the office but it said no one has still touched it. LOL

Ollie Weeks 05-24-2012 12:23 AM

terrific interview

TonySCV 05-24-2012 12:41 AM

Here's Robitaille and Leiweke parading the Campbell Bowl ... just as Leiweke noted in the radio interview...

And he is clearly touching it so why is he pretending he hasn't? Or am I not understanding something?

The latter.

The team didn't want to touch it or have it on their plane. Leiweke and Luc flew home separately so they carried it with them.

I am not a superstitious person, but was glad to see Dustin not touch the trophy, the other night. Just saying. You never know.

In the Petros interview, he actually says he doesn't want to touch it and that's why it's still in his trunk. Just had to say that, I'm a dick!

I wish they would put it at the Jonathan Club. I work across the street and a few of the suits here are members so I'm sure I coudl go snap a photo. Will they have it on display anywhere?

My friend works there. I am planning something very mischievous.
