Rangers may lose Mike Sullivan
It was reported a few days ago that the Flames are waiting to interview Mike Sullivan. Flames GM Jay Feaster worked with Sullivan in TB.

Until the Rangers are eliminated, which could be as late as mid-June should they go the distance and claim the Cup, Sullivan is off-limits, strictly verboten, to any outside approaches.

Gauging his level of interest, if any, in this vast reclamation project, then, could very well be what Flames general manager Jay Feaster is waiting on before reversing field and turning to other options.

At 44, Sullivan would project the youngish, upwardly mobile image an exhausted, stale franchise keeps insisting it’s searching for. He therefore doesn’t come with a lot of baggage, but would arrive with NHL head-coaching experience already at his beck and call. Sullivan, remember, skippered his home-state Boston Bruins for two seasons, sandwiched around the 2004-2005 lockout. In the first of those, he piloted the B’s to a 41-17-15-7 record, good for 104 points and top perch in the Northeast Division.

Scott Gordon could be a possibility as a replacement. The former Islanders head coach. He is currently an assistant coach with Toronto. Ron Wilson hired him. Torts was on the staff with Wilson and Gordon at the 2010 Olympics. Randy Carlyle will look to bring in his guys. Scott Arniel is rumored to be joining the Leafs as an assistant under Carlyle. Gordon is not a Carlyle guy. Also,Jeff Gorton worked with Gordon in Boston. Gordon was the B's AHL coach when Gorton was AGM there. Gordon was the head coach of the US WC team last spring. Derek Stepan,Ryan McDonagh and Chris Kreider played on that team.

Good riddance!

Silence Of The Plams 05-24-2012 01:53 PM

Please take him calg. We dont want

BroadwayBlues 05-24-2012 01:57 PM

Bye. Don't let the door hit you on the way out.

gmerger37 05-24-2012 01:58 PM

Make sure he takes the dry erase board that he uses to write love notes to Torts with during time outs.

God knows he isn't drawing up power play plays on it.

frankthefrowner 05-24-2012 01:58 PM

I like Sullivan, but his inability to adjust the Power play has been BRUTAL!! His PK work has been outstanding.

Bob Richards 05-24-2012 02:05 PM

Please take him. We'll even wrap him for you.

New York RKY 05-24-2012 02:12 PM

Wanted him gone for a long time. He has no idea how to run the power play.

Jabroni 05-24-2012 02:13 PM

I wonder if the Power Play will improve if he leaves...

NYR Sting 05-24-2012 02:16 PM

I'll say this: if I'm choosing between Scott Gordon and Mike Sullivan, I'll take Scott Gordon, no hesitation.

Kershaw 05-24-2012 02:16 PM

Good riddance.

mrjimmyg89 05-24-2012 02:17 PM

The inability to run an effective PP is astounding. He can go, but keep his PK strategies, they are very effective.

If it does, we know why it sucked.

Isn't Sullivan in charge of the defense?

In that case a lot our success this year goes to him. Would be ashame to see him go.

ThisYearsModel 05-24-2012 02:26 PM

If our success gets him a head coaching job, good for him. It is flattery towards the Rangers.

I'd love for Jim Schoenfeld to come in his place. But I know that will likely not happen as he's the reason why our farm system is producing such studs that are ready to play immediately upon insertion.

As for Scott Gordon I like the idea. Torts relies heavily on guys he trusts, if you see he always goes to Sullivan for council before some sort of major decision. We need someone equally as passionate and firy as Sullivan too, he brings a lot to the team dynamic that goes unnoticed. I'd love for the replacement to be a power play wizard too but not a lot of guys can fit the criteria we're all looking for as those candidates have head coaching jobs.

RangerBoy 05-24-2012 02:37 PM

Torts is the PP specialist. Torts had a great PP in Buffalo when was an assistant there. He did have Mogilny,LaFontaine and Hawerchuk.

Derek Stepan, Rangers. Team USA coach Scott Gordon identified Stepan as one of the players he was most impressed with after the tournament was finished, comparing him to Boston’s Patrice Bergeron. “I didn’t realize how good Derek Stepan was,” Gordon told Sporting News. “He was pretty impressive not just from a point standpoint but his hockey intelligence. He’s the whole package.” Stepan had seven points in seven games for Team USA.

Maybe we just need more parts.

petejudge 05-24-2012 02:39 PM

i think a lot of people here are not exactly sure what mike sullivan does for this team...this would really be a shame.

silverfish 05-24-2012 02:42 PM

Bring in Leetch :sarcasm:

I never remember if it's Torts or Sully who runs the PP. I know Sully and Torts have a good relationship so in that sense it would be sad to see him go.

If he runs the PP, well then, good riddance.

Wouldn't be a huge fan of Gordon coming in, but that's just me.

KreiMeARiver 05-24-2012 02:47 PM

Addition by subtraction

Brian Boyle 05-24-2012 02:51 PM

Does anyone have any reason to believe Sullivan runs the PP? I remember when Tortorella was hired he made it clear he thinks it's important the head coach runs the PP.
