Salo 2002
Looking back at it, that horrible moment in the Olympics 2002, how do you feel about Salo?

I never blamed Salo for what happened. Sure he had a bad game, no doubt, but he wasn't alone. It was a bad game by most players and they all deserve to take part in the blame. The headlines about Salo in the newspapers were just ridiculous and over the top.

Salo deserves to be remembered as the best Swedish goalie in the era between Lindberg and Lundqvist and the hero of 1994, not as the guy who let in that one goal.

Bah, i agree. He should be able to shoot one or two goal in his own net against the team we where facing and with the team we had on the ice. To blame him is just stupid, the team was bad all over.

Salo was the best goalie we had at the time, sure, he had an awful game, but it was a team loss. The entire team played awful, the same team that made the eventual champions, Canada, look like they didn't know what they were doing.

I think what sealed the deal with Salo's shamefilled legacy however was the 5 goals he let by him in the quarterfinal of 2003 against Finland. When Salo heads to the bench to get swapped out for Tellqvist and gives him the tap on the pads, that's the end of his career to me.

He was a good goalie and took a lot of **** from the media after that game. Too much in my opinion.

It was an awful team effort.

Salo is a great person btw, really nice to speak with, I wish him all the luck with Leksand.

Yeah, always been annoyed by how much crap he got for that game, when it was the whole team that played awful. The game is pretty blurry to me as I never rewatched it, but I vaguely remember him making a big save a little while before the infamous goal and I thought to myself "WTF is the defense doing today?". So he was far from alone.

I will always remember him for the Olympic gold in 1994 and his two shutouts in the 2-game final against Finland in the 1998 World Championship. Not sure if I would put him as the best between the Lindbergh and Lundqvist era (Pekka Lindmark comes to mind), but he's probably top 3 and was for a while the only Swedish goalie to follow in the NHL.

Salo played brilliant in that tournament up until that famous Belarus-goal. He saved Sweden's ass against the Czechs (2-1) in the group stage and was .924 despite the four goals against Belarus.

I will always remember Salo for how he always played at his best on the national team 1994-02.

It happens. It's not like Lundqvist was very good against Slovakia in 2010.

Time is a great healer :)

I never blamed him, it was a very poor game by the whole team and we shouldn't have been in a situation where he couldn't afford make a mistake like that without losing us the game.

Sadly I think that in 20 years or so when there's a lot of new fans that never got to see Salo play he will be talked about for that one mistake.

He was a good goalie. At the very least the best one Sweden had. They should've scored a couple more goals and the defense shouldn't have been so ill-paired...

That incident had meant absolutely nothing if the rest of the team had played decently. Now he became a scapegoat just for the goal being kind of hilarious.
