When the Sharks acquired center Dominic Moore before the February trade deadline, they hoped the savvy veteran could be a late-season difference-maker. Instead, Moore struggled in San Jose and didn't even play in the final two games of the Sharks' first-round playoff loss to St. Louis.

But Tuesday Moore revealed that his family has been dealing with a personal crisis that may have contributed to his lack of production on the ice. In a statement released by the Sharks, Moore said that his wife Katie was diagnosed with a rare liver cancer toward the end of the season and underwent surgery at an undisclosed California hospital in Apri

Diagnosed with rare liver cancer near end of regular season, underwent surgery @ (unnamed) California hospital in April.

(Can't find record mentioned in article of Sharks announcement of Moore's statement on his wife.)

Definitely would have distracted his on ice play.

I hope for the best for Dominic, Katie, and their family.

All the best to the Moore family and Katie.

Kick cancer in the ***!

Hold the Pickles 06-05-2012 01:29 PM

Wow, thats terrible. And as rough as it must be going this, his class still shines though brightly. Wish them all the best.

Inub0i 06-05-2012 01:32 PM

Stay strong Katie and stay strong Dominic.
All the best.

hockeyball 06-05-2012 01:33 PM

Uhg, that is harsh.

I wonder if Moore will be re-signed then regardless of his record with the Sharks. It would be fine with me, he's a solid 3rd line center.

I don't know, I got the impression he might be taking some time off.

LadyStanley 06-05-2012 01:48 PM

One reason he would want to be re-signed (or signed somewhere) is to ensure medical coverage continues.

magic school bus 06-05-2012 01:56 PM

Wow. I hope she's doing better. I can't imagine having that in your mind and still competing at the top level.

StreetSharks 06-05-2012 01:58 PM

That would be harsh, especially dealing with that in a new city.

TheJuxtaposer 06-05-2012 01:59 PM

Brutal. Here's to Katie kicking cancer in the ass!

There is some continuation of coverage, but it becomes self-pay for the coverage pretty quickly.

Would be covered under COBRA (up to 18 months after end of employment, so July 1, 2012-December 31, 2013), at group rates.

PondShark 06-05-2012 02:11 PM

really sad to hear. As a cancer survivor my heart goes out to Dom, Katie, kids, family and friends.

Ivan13 06-05-2012 02:20 PM

All the best wishes to the Moore family.

Led Zappa 06-05-2012 02:24 PM

Terrible news. Best wishes to the family and for a full recovery

Iron Chef 06-05-2012 02:29 PM

Best wishes to him and his family. The positive news, as some of you alluded to already, is that he'd likely want to re-sign with us to give his wife stability during this tough time. There's no way that he wants to stay a 2nd round pick trade bait when dealing with something of this magnitude.

Not to mention, the fact he is releasing a statement when there weren't any fans demanding answers shows that he respects the organization and wants to stay.

Eighth Fret 06-05-2012 02:30 PM

Wow. Awful news. All the best to Dominic, Katie and their family as they go through this.

Man.. **** cancer.

Arkansas Shark 06-05-2012 02:37 PM

This is just terrible. I feel awful for bad mouthing Moore on these boards, now knowing what he, his wife and family are going through.

Re-sign this man Admiral Wilson!!

slocal 06-05-2012 02:44 PM

I can't imagine being on the road while my better half is dealing with something like that. Be strong, Katie!
