2012-2013 Shawinigan Cataractes
 

So here we are again. We just won the Memorial Cup but things are already getting busy for next year with the expansion draft and the draft.

Next season will be a tough one for the Cats since our big year was 2011-2012. GM Martin Mondou has already traded Maximilien Le Sieur to Sherbrooke for a 4th round pick and unprotected players from other teams. Nothing has been announced so far for these two players but they should be Zachary Whitlock and Mikael Langlois.

Mondou has also landed goaltender Chase Gaudet who was playing in the Maritimes Junior A. An NHL team recommended him to the Cataractes in January. The backup should be Ty Zastre.

Is Kabanov staying, or has he been traded? I know that Yannick Veilleux is going to Moncton, unfortunately. He looked very good in the Memorial Cup games we got to see here in Illinois.

Kabanov will probably play for Bridgeport next year (AHL)

Any word on whether or not Eric Veilleux will be returning?

With his relationship with Hartley it almost seems natural that the Flames offer him a position as an assistant coach. But nothing other than speculation from fans to date.

Any rumors on your side of the country?

Rumour is that he is at the draft, but not there with Shawinigan. His contract with the team is done.

I saw Chase Gaudet play this past season with Yarmouth of the Maritime Hockey League. Played well when given a chance, the team's starting goalie was a 3 year player, now heading to the NCAA; was probably the best goalie in the MHL this past season, so Gaudet didn't play as much as he probably wanted. Best of luck to him with Shawinigan.

As for Éric Veilleux, he was at the Draft but just to select his Memorial Cup ring size. He didn't stay for the draft. He's looking at his opportunities right now and GM Martin Mondou is scheduled to give him an offer as soon as the board of directors give him the OK on the contract terms.

Quick update to say that this weekend the Cats traded Anton Zlobin to the Foreurs in exchange of 2012 2nd round draft pick, 2012 3rd round draft pick,
2012, 1st round Euro draft pick and defenseman Yan Dumontier. Sad to see Anton go but it will help us rebuild faster. I think the Euro pick is the key here as well as the 2nd round pick (D-Man Raphael Maheux).

As for the other picks I'm happy with them but I'll give an opinion on them once I'll get the chance to give them a look at training camp.

I was thinking about it this morning the Cats have too much 20's on their roster right now with Peter Sakaris, Loïk Poudrier, Vincent Arseneau, Mathieu Gagnon and Jonathan Narbonne. I believe Poudrier and Narbonne will stay with us but I don't know for the others. I'd like to keep 'em all but we can't.

The more likely to go first is defenseman Mathieu Gagnon. I really like him he's playing a very physical game and he's a team player. He could be a good asset for any team.

Arseneau and Sakaris will probably be traded too but I heard they don't have much value right now. What do you think about these two guys and what we could get in exchange?

all 3 of gagnon, Arseneault and sakaris have extremely limited value.

much better overagers are on the market.

Sherbrooke dealt Werthner to PEI. I think they still have a spot for a 20. Arseneault wouldnt be a bad fit there..

I think you're right the market has a lot to offer so the demand is low. Not that I want to see them go but if we could trade them we could rebuild faster if we can get something interesting in return.

Éric Veilleux will not be back in Shawinigan next season. He'll be coaching the Drakkar.

I think his assistant Dany Dupont has good chances to take over his job as the coach of the Cats but GM Martin Mondou has stated he has a lot of candidates in the mix for the job.

Danny DuPont should get multiple offers, good coach who's due for his shot, a little surprised Veilleux left for BC of all places but good for them, however Shawi will be a mess next year and the year after.

Just a quick update to say that the Cataractes should announce this week or next week who their future head coach will be.

The Cats deserved to win the Memorial Cup. Great character and determination.

The Cats won it the hard way no less.
A second training camp in April and having to run the table when they were down in the tournament. The players and coaches had such incredible character and every one of those kids left it all on the ice.

Patrik Koys.. Once was touted to be the best player to come out of Czech Republic. Late 95, great pick.

Interesting. Shawi takes Marvin Cupper who is a goalie. They should have a solid 1-2 punch now with him and Gaudet. I wonder who will be the starter.

Real happy with the pick of Patrik Koys. If anyone have some infos on him feel free to give them! I heard he's a really good player and he'll be at the training camp in August. As for Marvin Cuppet, GM Martin Mondou said he could be the #1 in net if he has a good training camp. Same thing here if you have infos on Cupper.

Interesting picks, both can make immeadiate impact and help make a long winter shorter.

Koys is a really talented technical player, EXCELLENT hands, very offensive minded.
Played a few games in the men`s league last year (Slovakia 2).

Was considered as the next coming of Marian Gaborik in the previous years, was a bit overshadowed in the U18 WC`s this year by Martin Reway, but I still have really high hopes for him.
IMO nowadays he`s ranked as the 3rd best prospect coming out of Slovakia (Marko Dano, Martin Reway, Patrik Koys) this year.

Cons - smallish, average skater IMO.

Overall -excellent pick up for you guys. This kid`s got a HUGE ceiling, if he grows/fills up a bit more. You`ll like him a lot, you`ll see ;)
