New Jersey Devils are NOT forfeiting 1st round pick 2012

Deadline has passed, Devils have not notified NHL they are giving up 2012 1st rd pick. So, they're not giving it up this year.

I'm really surprised !

]NJD had until 5pm Tue to decide on forfeiture of 1st round pick (Kovalchuk discipline). They opted not to forfeit and will hold the pick.

jumptheshark 06-12-2012 08:14 PM

I thought the deadline was 72 hours before the draft?

Mystlyfe 06-12-2012 08:14 PM

Dumb choice. Odds are slim that they'll be picking this late in the first round again, even if they retain all of their key players. It's hard to reach the cup finals.

Kitten Mittons 06-12-2012 08:16 PM

I guess there is someone they really want.

Seems like a goofy move considering how deep the 2013 draft is supposed to be, and how late they're picking this year.

Confound 06-12-2012 08:18 PM

Dumb move IMO.

Doubt they pick that late next year.

Seto 06-12-2012 08:19 PM

Eyeing someone. Colton Scissons?

glovesave_35 06-12-2012 08:21 PM

Must be hoping the NHL forgets about it.

Hockey Sports Fan 06-12-2012 08:22 PM

Am I wrong in thinking they have until the 2014 draft to forfeit the pick?

Lou and the organization realize how empty their prospect pool has become with so many graduates. With 2012 and 2013 supposed to be pretty deep, now is not the time to deny that pool a first round pick.

I'm skeptical. They have to report it to the league, not the media.

Flat Stanley 06-12-2012 08:44 PM

Eh, I think they should have forfeited the pick.

29th overall compared to what they would be picking in the future, just seems like the right year to do it.

You also have to think Lou is confident to go to the Finals next year and try to win the Cup, so maybe this is a message to his fans saying that they think they can pick later next year.

TOGuy14 06-12-2012 08:56 PM

This is something I expect will seriously backfire. Lou was given a golden out on this draft pick and he wasted it. I don't think NJ can possibly do any better in the next two years (I don't see them as legit contenders in the East, espectially if ZP leaves, and Marty retires).

Grant 06-12-2012 09:04 PM

We laugh now (I really do think this is a dumb move) but I won't make and judgement calls for a couple years still (at which point we will have all forgotten about it haha), never know if you will strike gold. There is a reason GMs get paid to do this stuff and we are in front of our computers.

JeffMangum 06-12-2012 09:07 PM

Not a bad move, IMO, for the moment, at least. If they finish bottom-10 next year, then yeah, it'll be bad. That said, this draft has good depth. It lacks high end talent, but the chances of getting a solid NHLer where the Devils are picking is decent.

I Hate Chris Butler 06-12-2012 09:26 PM

This is gonna backfire worse than Calgary giving up Gormley.

Shakey Rustie 06-12-2012 09:26 PM

I'm really surprised if this turns out to be true, but then again I'm not an expert so I wont criticize.

MillarWithASave 06-12-2012 09:30 PM

They will probably wait until 2014, and they will get the first overall pick.

I don't think its that big of a deal. it shows that Lou is confident in the team. obviously it will be tough to be in that pick spot again but is there really a huge difference between say #22 and #29-30?

Kershaw 06-12-2012 09:33 PM

Typical HF thinking approach:

The Rangers have a higher draft pick than the Devils and neither teams won the cup. :)

Ideally, there wouldnt be, but it depends on the draft. 2012 is a deep draft for players that should be decent at least. Does '13 have that kind of depth? Maybe #29 in '12 is a more valuable pick that #22 in '13.

I believe they have until 2014 to forfeit a pick.

2006

22 Claude Giroux
29 Chris Summers

2007

22 Max Pacioretty
29 Jim O'brien

2008

22 Jordan Eberle
29 Daultan Leveille

2009

22 Jordan Schroeder
29 Carter Ashton

2010

22 Jarred Tinordi
29 Emerson Etem

I score it 22 wins 3 times, 29 once and 2010 is to early to call

22 might not be the best pick to compare it to since it seems like they had an amazing run of getting great players with that pick, but if you just look at 29 it's not really that wonderful a list. Etem might turn out to be a good player but it's to early to tell. I can see the logic behind not forfeiting the pick if you know that the pick in 2013/14 ends up being in the 20-25 range but the big problem is what happens if it ends up in the 1-14 range, then you end up looking real bad(unless the guy you pick at 29 ends up a good player)

The only way this makes sense is if 2014 is considered a weak draft(from my knowledge 2013 is supposed to be pretty good)

Still a stupid decision IMO. You trade a roster player if there is some late rounder your really want. I guess they might be hoping the new CBA may reverse this league ruling.
