Oh, I understand that. But I am unsure if he really warranted an NHL two-way contract rather than just an AHL contract at this point.

Probably signed an NHL contract just in case of injury problems. At least that's my hope for the reason why.

as a call-up 4th line guy with a 2 way how is this a bad deal for Dallas? He's an AHL guy who can fill a bottom role for a few weeks if injuries require a call up. They're not on the hook long term and 2-way means they're not paying a lot while in Austin. What's the beef here?

Strange, I figured he'd be gone. Guess they must think they'll have enough contract slots.

this is a guy who should have been given a legit shot at the lower lines over the last few years. Now that it seems he is an AHLer for life I dont see why they need to use up a contract spot for him.

He's 27.

What's the point...? These guys are a dime a dozen, we surely could've found someone younger.

My thoughts exactly. He also played for Gulutzan as well and it seems the organization is serious about having consistency between Austin and Dallas. I know this ship has sailed but I always thought he was more deserving of a 4th line NHL spot than a guy like Petersen.

I'm surprised there's some negative feelings about the contract.

They are close to the 50 contract limit which is concerning, but you shouldn't throw -a roster full of 20-22 year olds on the ice in the AHL, and the chances of getting Wathier on just an AHL contract is likely slim to none. Part of the development process that Les Jackson always brings up is learning to be a pro which is more than just on the ice. You need a couple Wathier's in a developmental league, IMO.

It'll be interesting to see if they feel they still have room for Lukowich ... or if he's even healthy enough to keep playing. Isn't he coming off a pretty significant injury?

If anything, this could indicate they won't be re-signing Luko, and Wathier could be taking on an even bigger leadership role in Texas.

Good veteran in the locker room for the Texas Stars to have. From what I've read about him, he's a really good guy and well liked throughout the organization. And if he's called up as a 4th liner from time to time, that doesn't hurt either.
