Jay McClement’s days with Avalanche likely over

Cross Jay McClement off the list of Avalanche players that will come back with the team next season.

McClement, who had a good season as the Avs’ third-line center (most of the time that was his spot anyway), is headed for the open market on July 1, words with various parties have made clear.

I'm hoping Dater is wrong here. I thought McClement would be a near lock to come back.

Ivan13 06-13-2012 06:09 PM

Silent Jay re-signing in 5, 4, 3, ....

I wonder what TPS has to say about this one.

The Shermanator 06-13-2012 06:09 PM

This is bad on so many levels.

BoxOfChocolates 06-13-2012 06:11 PM

Atleast this should hopefully make July 1st more interesting...

Sucks to see McClement go though.

Granlund2Pulkkinen* 06-13-2012 06:15 PM

He was a good, strong willed player, but he can be replaced and will be replaced. Not a huge deal.

Plus I would love to see Joey vs. Michael in the preseason for a roster spot.

AvalancheFan19 06-13-2012 06:16 PM

Uh oh.. Then again, I wouldn't want Silent Jay back for too much money. I'll just look at it that we're using the money saved on him for Suter :sarcasm:

Neither should be on the 4th line.

jaems 06-13-2012 06:17 PM

Disappointing. I don't see the big deal about his age. He's 29.

henchman24 06-13-2012 06:18 PM

Where is TPS when we need him?

Maybe the Avs weren't willing to go past 2.5 per year. I wouldn't blame them on that.

BrickAHL 06-13-2012 06:22 PM

I'll wait for what TPS has to say.

By who? And don't give me Hishon/Sgarbossa.

iAvs 06-13-2012 06:24 PM

We're stacked at center, so I can see why the Avs might pass on the price tag.

Yeah, so we have Stastny/Duchene/O'Reilly, then who if not McClement?

They have players in the system who could fill in, or maybe they might stick Olver at center. There are options.

I could see Malone or Olver being the 4th line center but I seriously hope Dater is wrong.

Those options are in free agency.

We need a veteran penalty killer, no point in letting McClement go. I wouldn't be surprised if we now go and get a cheaper player in Burish or someone.

Replacing someone who single-handedly saved the penalty kill, has 553 games of NHL experience and is an alternate captain on the team with Olver would be a disaster. Olver is nowhere near McClement's level of defensive ability, which can also be said for everyone else in the system/available to us from outside.

And another thought, this makes the trade: Stewart/Shattenkirk/2nd for Johnson and Siemens. Not as good as it was before.

This.

We just traded Winnik and Galiardi who both had played lots on the PK, and now were letting McClement go. No way can we afford to play Olver in his spot.

Dater is reporting it, and no matter which way you slice it, the man is replaceable. Maybe they are looking for a replacement via free agency. Dater could be wrong as well. Just sit back and let the situation play out.

TwoPadStack, he is a poster who is friends with some of the guys on the team.

Christian Litscher 06-13-2012 06:46 PM

With Stastny, O'Reilly, Landeskog, and Kobasew our pk will be ok. I would still rather sign McClement than not but it looks like Bender was right.

Bill Peckerskull 06-13-2012 06:47 PM

Jarrett Stoll please

Stoll will get a lot of money and I'd rather use that money to re-sign McClement.
