Stars sign Molin to 3 year ELC

per Mark on Twitter, Emil Molin has signed a 3-year ELC. I expect he stays in Sweden and that the contract slides.

We could've broken this news if usefulfiction had elaborated on the players he saw yesterday. :shakehead :sarcasm:

Molin easily identified by his luscious flow.

BigG44 06-15-2012 02:40 PM

He will not count against the 50 contract limit. That makes Stransky and Molin as the guys on ELC's who will not go towards the 50 contract limit.

I guess he needs to change his name to NOTusefulfiction.

Captain Awesome 06-15-2012 09:43 PM

That's not really fair, this is strictly non-fiction, it is not in his wheelhouse whatsoever.

glovesave_35 06-15-2012 10:38 PM

I don't know, he created a twist of fiction when he added the element of mystery to his story.

usefulfiction 06-15-2012 10:43 PM

I've let us all down! I showed my wife a picture of Emil and she wasn't convinced he was at the table. Only thing I can recall is that one of the guys had facial features that reminded me or Eriksson.

So basically a dreamy Swede?

BigG44 06-15-2012 11:05 PM

Could have been Klingberg.

LatvianTwist 06-16-2012 12:02 AM

I don't think I've ever seen most of our prospects' faces, tbh.

SonicSpeedDash 06-16-2012 12:16 AM

Hmm wonder who will be signed to another ELC tomorrow.

piqued 06-16-2012 10:44 AM

Ritchie still needs to be signed.

BigG44 06-16-2012 10:51 AM

Troy Vance as well.

You know ... there is a legitimate chance the Stars sign every pick from 2011. In fact, I'd honestly be disappointed if they didn't. Every pick deserved a contract.

I can't think of draft class with 100% getting contracts for the Stars. There's still a chance with 2009, but I think Curtis McKenzie getting a contract or actually signing with Dallas is a bit questionable.

I say that because Scott Winkler has come on so strong last year after finally being mostly healthy. Since both project more as Bottom 6 forwards, I don't know that Dallas will (or can even) give both a contract.

Miami and Colorado College both lost top end talent this year, so both players should got plenty of offensive opportunities. However, my pre-season hunch is Winkler gets a contract if only one is available to the players.

Vance might be a guy you wait and see on, maybe wait til next spring. I think it's fair to say he didn't impress quite to the extent Molin/Jokipakka/Stransky did in their post-draft seasons. Of course he still has his size so I'd be shocked if he wasn't ultimately signed.

That's true that offensively he didn't break out like some of us expected, but the Defending Big D end of season report did indicate that defensively he's taken significant strides towards being a big, shutdown defender.

alking to scouts, it's clear that Vance's strength lies in his mobility relative to his size. A big defenseman like Vance usually has trouble with his skating and especially has an issue in close-quarters play where smaller players are able to use their agility to get around the big guys in front. Vance doesn't have this issue and he's been able to develop a keen ability on the defensive side of his game that shows that while he may have been considered an "offensive" defenseman when he was drafted, he likely projects a very large blue liner who can effectively move the puck out of the zone in transition when needed.

The Stars are making a attempt at building a system that breeds big, strong defensemen with good puck skills and players like that are a very valuable commodity in the NHL. Vance is getting rave reviews about his ability to defend around the net and in transition, and despite limited power play time with the Tigers has put up fairly respectable offensive numbers.

Vance is still just 18 years old and is relatively young for a prospect of his experience level. He still has time to hone his already-considerable hockey intelligence and to continue to build upon his offensive skill. It's his size and ability to defend in front, however, that makes him an exciting prospect to watch.
Like you said though the key thing is size. GMJN and the team's almost manic obsession with size since 2009 is the primary reason I agree there's little chance this guy doesn't get a contract with the team. The only roadblock could be his own realization that he'd be buried under a deep, deep group of defenders. However, you'd think he'd be loyal to the Stars for being the reason he's in the position he currently is.

Hull Fan 06-17-2012 12:05 AM

His size gets him a look over a lot of guys. If he can skate and defend then he'll get a chance in Dallas or some team will pony up something good for him. You don't leave a more athletic Hall Gill in the minors forever and I don't see him pulling a Schultz when it was Dallas who mentioned him to Victoriaville, told him to make the jump which has made an NHL career possible and Dallas who drafted him.

hairylikebear 06-17-2012 12:19 AM

The deadline for signing players out of the SEL is June 15th and I'm not sure what it is for the liiga but it's probably similar. Vance can sign whenever. That's why the Scandinavians are signed and baby gigantor isn't (Oleksiak is plain ol' gigantor).

I too would be very shocked if they let go of Vance without signing him to a contract. They would simply have to see him in the pros before they can ever competently judge his potential.

ReverendAlBundy 06-17-2012 12:46 AM

I think Vance has NHL potential over a lot of other people we drafted in '11. They'll definitely end up signing him and I'm pretty sure he'll end up in the NHL, whether it's with the stars or not.

txomisc 06-17-2012 10:47 AM

I'd like to see an update listing for Vance. He wasnt that far away from being in the upcoming draft instead of last season so as a younger player he could still have some height to gain.

Molin is staying in Sweden for next season.

oconnor9sean 05-30-2013 05:23 PM

I didn't think Emil Molin was white, so I was surprised to see that we just signed the Swedish Andrew Garfield.

Captain Awesome 05-30-2013 05:43 PM

Interesting move for him, I hope he makes a real impact in the SEL this year. Love how slick he is with the puck.

Not sure. For some reason I thought I remembered him as an African-Swede...

A coloured Ove Molin jr! That'd look kickass!
