Potential buyouts

With the cap floor being at 54$ (it might change in the next CBA) and the low-quality UFA pool, I think that we might see more buyouts this summer. I'm not talking about outrageous amount of money, just some small buyouts.

Cap floor has already been a problem for a couple of teams last year. For example, Dallas decided to trade for Eric Nystrom at his full salary instead of claiming him on waivers at half-price, because they were under the limit. Islanders also had some issues. They kept Niederreiter on their roster, even though he wasn't ready, because he had an high cap hit.

So maybe for these teams it would be better to buyout a few contracts and have 25-26 contracts on their payroll instead of 23 or less.

Here are some players that I could see being bought out (correct me if I'm wrong)

Marty Reasoner - NYI - Contract : 1 year/1.35M
Antti Miettinen - WIN - Contract : 1 year/1.35M
Mark Santorelli - FLO - Contract : 1 year/1.6M
Matt Bradley - FLO - Contract : 1 year/0.95M
Eric Godard - DAL - Contract : 1 year/0.725M
Brian Boucher - CAR - Contract : 1 year/0.95M
Anthony Stewart - CAR - Contract : 1 year/0.9M
BJ Crombeen - STL - Contract : 1 year/1M
Eric Boulton - NJ -Contract : 1 year/0.66M

Any other suggestions?

Andreas Lilja i hope

I have a feeling Miettinen might get a chance to prove himself for a month or two before being benched. He played better the last month or so...

I doubt they are gonna buy-out so small contracts.

Laus723 06-19-2012 05:45 AM

It's Mike Santorelli, and he's not going to be bought out, makes no sense. And Matt Bradley was a solid 4th liner while healthy, he wouldn't be bought out.

I was thinking the same. Makes no sense to waste money and mess up the caphit for that low of an amount. Trade for late picks/waiver those players. problem solved.

Jeff Schultz and Joel Ward, I hope.

More like Scott Gomez and his $7.4 mil/yr cap hit

416Leafer 06-19-2012 08:31 AM

Armstrong, buyout would be 1 million/year for two years
Lombardi, buyout would be 1.16 million/year for two years

Alternative is them costing 6.5 million for one year, but also taking up two roster spots and preventing guys like Kadri and Frattin from making the NHL, and preventing Burke from going out and signing a veteran 3rd line centre who could actually be longterm option (ex: Stoll, though i see no reason why he would come here).

Blitzburgh87* 06-19-2012 08:46 AM

Why buyout Eric godard? And have him on your cap for years and years.

enthropi 06-19-2012 09:27 AM

I hope the Oilers try to get BJ Crombeen if he's on the outs in STL... Can't he trap like a proper Blues? What's the issue there? Just curious...

There is a slight chance Handzus could be bought out. They are certainly acting like he doesn't exist in every interview. Have not mentioned him once and he was beyond terrible last season.

With his 2012-2013 salary at 5.5 and 2013-2014 at 4.5, $7.4 mil/yr hit could interest (I wish) some teams having a hard time reaching that new 70mil cap floor.

Diatidialga 06-19-2012 09:31 AM

There's a chance Winnipeg could buy out Hainsey's contract.

BigHabs 06-19-2012 09:36 AM

I doubt Bradley and Crombeen get bought out. If anything they would be dealt if their teams didn't want them. Both are capable 4th liners and upgrades on AHL callups. Both would be key for depth as well.

While it's unlikely, there's been talk that the Blue Jackets might buy out Steve Mason.

If all else fails, I think someone would take him on re-entry waivers. For 800k he's still a serviceable bottom6 guy.

Jets, Jackets, Yotes, Stars? :dunno:

I don't think buyouts are an annual thing. Or are you talking because of the expiration of the current CBA and the possibility of it existing in the first year of the new one, because those only take place at contractually-agreed periods in time?

We just have better options for the 4th line in Sobotka, Reaves, and Porter. Personally I dont think Crombeen is going anywhere though, he will finish out his contract as a Blue then probably sign some where else next offseason.

There is a buy out period every offseason.

Why would they do that? He's one of our top 4 d-men and we're well below the cap ceiling. I just don't see the point, when he could be traded at the deadline for a couple picks.

Thanks for the details, although I'm disappointed you didn't bite on my trolling trap comment ;) well done...

Years and years? It would be 2 years and what 250-300k a year? Hardly something that hurts if you are close to the contract max.
