Trade ? Why have both along with Hackett..

Jarick 06-19-2012 12:39 PM

Trade Backstrom would be solid, but it's a smart signing.

Let's see how close to $1.5M AAV I was...we were all pretty good with the 3-year guesses too!

Engebretson 06-19-2012 12:39 PM

Makes me happy. Three years is a little surprising (considering his last umpteen contracts have been 1 year deals) but it secures some depth for a few more years. Hopefully this also means they are confident that any injury concerns are behind him.

Hackett could use some more AHL time. No need to rush him to the big show next year.

Dr Jan Itor 06-19-2012 12:40 PM

Love it. Guessing around $1.5 - $2 per year.

Backstrom/Harding this year. Hackett in Houston.
Harding/Hackett for the 2 years following. Kuemper/Gustafsson in Houston.

Makes complete sense.

Jarick 06-19-2012 12:42 PM

Per Russo, $1.9M per. A bit high IMO but not bad.

GopherState 06-19-2012 12:43 PM

Too high, too long but it's better than paying $6M for Backstrom.

The last few were one yr deals because Backstrom was locked up for so much so long. Backstrom is gone after this season. Harding is a starter in waiting that can replace him cheaply. It makes too much sense! ;)

Not bad, I'll take it.. Backs trade ?

llamapalooza 06-19-2012 12:44 PM

Great deal. Reasonable price, and the term lays out a very clear plan for the future of the position in the organization.

usernam* 06-19-2012 12:46 PM

Too high? With a cap of $70M, $1.9M is 2.7% of that. Josh Harding is 4.3% of this team. Even with a cap of $64M, his hit is just under 3%, while he's still 4.3% of this team...

Under two mil in 2013-2015 for a starter? I'm not complaining! ;)

Dr Jan Itor 06-19-2012 12:48 PM

Beware... incoming Backstrom proposals.

It would only be a deadline trade imo.

IronRangeHockey 06-19-2012 12:50 PM

I definately agree with the Hackett can use more time in the system opinion, but I dont argue the opinion that he could potentially back up Harding.

I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see Backstrom traded (if he waives his NTC), more cap space for the 2 big plays this team could use (P&S).

LightningStrikes 06-19-2012 12:51 PM

Harding on his extension:
Quote:

“I love being here, I love the city, I love the fans,” Harding said. “It was really important for me to stay here and work towards my goal (of being a starting goaltender in the NHL).” (...)

“I like the way the organization is heading and I want to be a part of it,” Harding said. “We’re maturing, we’re still young and have a lot of talent. I’m ready to get back at it.” (...)

“Ever since I was drafted I’ve wanted to be the number one goalie for the Minnesota Wild,” Harding said. “Obviously that’s not going to be given to me. Hopefully, one day, I’ll be able to take over.”

Backstrom probably won't be traded during this off-season as I'm sure the Wild brass want to continue to have Hackett get playing time, and we know injuries will undoubtedly happen to one of our goalies, so it's not like he won't see playing time in the NHL this year.

This does signal the end of Backstrom though, and we have our plans to either have Harding take over the reigns or continue to play a back-up with Hackett 2 years down the road. I'm fine with the deal, 3 years seems long, but they at least know the direction that they are going.

As someone else said, maybe Backstrom is a deadline deal, but I think he just walks with that salary and a NTC.

Corvidae 06-19-2012 12:54 PM

Awesome signing. They have a lot of options in goal now.

I was almost positive he was headed for UFA so I was shocked to hear he wanted a multi with the Wild. Shows his dedication to the franchise because he could have got more on the open market and maybe a better chance to start.

TaLoN 06-19-2012 12:54 PM

Harding is just so full of win in his attitude! It's impossible to NOT like the guy!

llamapalooza 06-19-2012 12:55 PM

Opinion on the main boards seems to be that Harding gave us a huge discount, and that the goalie market is now very sparse.

usernam* 06-19-2012 12:56 PM

I almost want him to be our starter just because his attitude is amazing. Too bad Hackett's coming up behind him.

A 60% raise for 3 years on a guy who has never proven to be a #1 starter and who has proven to be replaceable. Again, I'll take spending less on a goalie if it means that money goes elsewhere (like the blue line) but 3 years...3 years.

(Don't like the 3 years)

Fel 96 06-19-2012 12:57 PM

Awesome news. :yo:

JawandaPuck 06-19-2012 12:59 PM

Harding was quoted as saying his desire to be the #1 guy means he requires MIN to offer him a multi-year deal. Done.

Backstrom has no NTC according to Capgeek. He's likely "done" too. Shipping him out would free up more dollars -- likely two new additions to the blueline then.

mnwildgophers 06-19-2012 01:00 PM

It's mostly a good deal because it gives us options at the goalie position and continues to let the guys develop well.
