Canucks draft F Brendan Gaunce 1st Round, 26th Overall
Welcome to the Canucks, Brendan!

TSN's Craig Button:

Brendan is big, strong two-way center. He is a good skater with a good stride and he moves well. He can improve his quickness and by doing so, he will become more difficult to stop because with his size, when he gains a step, an opponent is faced with a losing proposition. He is smart and plays the game well both with and without the puck. He makes plays and because he's smart he gets scoring chances and an improved shot can make him that much better offensively. He works without the puck and is also capable of playing on the wing which adds a component of versatility to his game. He will assert with his body, hold off defenders and create advantages for himself and the team with his approach but is not going to be the punishing type. He has shown the ability to raise the level of his play when the games become more demanding and important. He's a very effective player and because he can find a way to contribute in multiple ways, this enhances his play and adds value to a team.

That was a solid pick.

Definitely the BPA. Will fit right into our organization.

VanEric 06-22-2012 09:29 PM

Seems like what we need. Someone who will be comfortable and effective playing behind Sedin and Kesler.

thekernel 06-22-2012 09:30 PM

looks like he was passed over by a lot of teams that need him. pretty good pick for 26th overall.

gillis is going with a big center, seems indicative of his "size matters" plan, no?

monster_bertuzzi 06-22-2012 09:30 PM

Really the best any of us could have hoped for at #26 in a so-so draft. Yay us.

keslerburrows 06-22-2012 09:30 PM

Any clue on how ready he is? I guess he's a bit of a long shot, still love this pick.

NoShowWilly 06-22-2012 09:30 PM

got a bad case of Gaunce.

had to laugh at Gillis' sell job.

shortshorts 06-22-2012 09:31 PM

BPA. I'm alright with it.

Huntershin Karuk 06-22-2012 09:31 PM

Yeah, this was the best case scenario with Maata gone.

Hopefully he can be a solid 3rd line center a'la Brandon Sutter one day.

School of WristShot 06-22-2012 09:31 PM

Solid pick.
Are you kidding me? - MG

Balls Mahoney 06-22-2012 09:32 PM

Don't know a whole lot about him but I'm impressed with how big he is. Kid has a huge frame.

Free Torts 06-22-2012 09:32 PM

Love the pick.

Canucks5551 06-22-2012 09:33 PM

I wanted Finn, Thrower, and Aberg more, but Gaunce isn't bad.

BloatedGuppy 06-22-2012 09:33 PM

Another power forward. Can never have too many of those. Has the predictable skating issues.

Can't say he looked too thrilled. Dour fellow.

this is who i wanted !!!!!!!!!!!! SO HAPPY! So excited!

After Faksa, and Girgensons, who I knew would be taken way before us, Gaunce was the guy I was hoping would fall, every pick after 14. Good job Gillis!

We get a big physical 3rd line center, exactly what we need. And he seems like a really good character guy, good work ethic etc. Who know what his ceiling is, could be top 6 C.

Canucker 06-22-2012 09:34 PM

Very happy we got Gaunce...I didn't think he'd be around by our pick.

dwarf 06-22-2012 09:34 PM

I like the pick, seems like a solid prospect.

tesplen 06-22-2012 09:34 PM

Gosh. I hope he'd at least project in our top 4 centers.

Long shot as a top 6 scorer maybe, sure-fire grinder is his floor.

Jack Tripper 06-22-2012 09:37 PM

nice to have a gm that will consistently take the bpa in the first round and not try to get too cute about the pick

the fact that this addresses a key organizational need is a bonus

Peter Griffin 06-22-2012 09:39 PM

Admittedly, I haven't seen him play, but I'm a bit confused with the questionable offensive upside being said of Gaunce. Put up a PPG on a low scoring team when there weren't a whole lot of CHL players in this draft to hit that type of production.

arsmaster 06-22-2012 09:39 PM

Good pick.

Its okay if you're a bit slow, when you're big.
