Trade for Luongo, Yea or Nay?

Ok, the rumor is out there and discussions have taken place with Van and Tallon. Question is, regardless of what we would have to give up, is it a good idea. My opinion, if Luongo was making the $1,618,000 in 2019 when he will be 40yo or the $1,000,000 he will be making in 2020 and 2021 when he will be 41 and 42 years old, THIS COMING SEASON when he will be 33, heck yes. But he will be making $6,714,000 in 2012/13 and his contract carries a $5,333,333 cap hit THROUGH 2021/22. So my answer is HECK NO and if such a trade is made for even a bag of pucks and a bad contract such as Upshall's I may slit my wrists!!!

MillarWithASave 06-24-2012 12:01 PM

We are talking about the same thing in the Off-Season thread and the Rumors thread.. but yeah, I agree. His contract is too hefty for the Panthers, I think that the Panthers need to stick to the main concern which is offense and not pick-up any goaltenders this offseason, Theo did a pretty good job last season. Seems like he has a few years left in him.

Georgia Panther 06-24-2012 12:07 PM

IMO, Luongo has the worst contract in the NHL and even if the Sedin brothers came along with him and we only gave up a bag of pucks it still wouldn't be worth it!!! PS-I do think Luongo is still an excellent goalie and harbor no bad feelings over his departure but his contract makes him TOXIC!!!

GP, we haven't always agreed on whether a highly paid goalie is worth it, but in this case, I think we both know Luongo isn't worth his contract. Did he get his team to the cup and nearly win it? Certainly, but it wasn't all him and he has serious issues with mental stability, allowing people to get into his head.

That coupled with how he and his agent messed with us before, I never want to see him down here again. Theo already proved he can be just as good for a much cheaper price. Yes there are a small number of goalies worth their value of a high price: Quick, Lundqvist, etc. They are few and far between. It takes a strong team defense to win and we already have that going for us.

A MAJOR Nay!

Not the worst. I still consider DiPietro the worst. Gomez is probably making less money now, or cheap to buyout so it might be the second worst.

When Luongo's on his game, he's worth every hypothetical penny of that caphit....Sure we have Markstrom, but he is still a prospect, who is still a year or two off.. Luongo is a ready-made superstar goalie, who could anchor our team for the next decade. Luongo can step in straight away and take us on playoff runs immediately. He gets so much undeserved hate from the media, it's unreal. I think people look at his contract and Schneider and forget how good Lou really is. It's very similar to Soupy. If we can get Gillis to substantially lower his asking price, I'd be 100% on-board to land Luongo.

Apparently I'm in the minority when I think it would be a great move to bring back Luongo.

Does anyone wonder why a GM as astute, as smart, and as calculated as Dale Tallon would initially ever be interested in bringing back an aging goalie with a large contract? There is a reason for it no question. He may know what I fear and what I think Is a concern. Markstrom may not be able to physically carry a team for 60 games a season. There is a reason Tallon is interested in Luongo and I'm sure if we know what he knows everyone would be in favor of bringing Luongo back.

StrangeVision 06-24-2012 12:42 PM

I would certainly feel better going into the season with Luongo than Theodore.

angry_treefrog 06-24-2012 12:46 PM

I'm going to abstain from this vote.

My initial reaction is to say, no, for all the reasons above.

Then again, a humbled Luongo returning may actually earn that contract. If Tallon & company think that Markstrom needs more time, then the deal makes more sense.

Key question - What happens to his NTC once he is traded?

Yes this. Luongo will not play for the remainder of his contract so who cares really. 6 mil is a bit too much but I wouldn't mind him.

Lampshade85 06-24-2012 01:08 PM

I noticed on capgeek that the contract isn't a +35 type contract (for obvious reasons) so would that mean that if he retires before his contract is up that the contract still takes up the cap space?

FlaPnthrsPunk 06-24-2012 01:12 PM

If it weren't for the horrible contract, I wouldn't be so opposed to bringing him back to Florida. I agree when he's on his game, there isn't much better, but he's too inconsistent when he needs to shine. From reports I've read about his ego in the past don't make me believe that he'd be good to have in the locker room to gel with the "Tallon type" of players there currently. That would also give Markstrom a very slim chance of developing into a starting role with us in the future. I just don't want anything to do with him coming back.

If you sign a contract when you're over 35, it will count towards the cap if you retire before it expires.

In this case, no it won't.

Am I right?

Cosmonaut 06-24-2012 01:16 PM

Really depends on what we give up for him. Voted No, but I'm not completely opposed to having him on the team.

SoupyFIN 06-24-2012 01:19 PM

I don't want him for the sole reason that he'd tie Tallon's hands in the future when it's time to sign the kids to big contracts and attract UFAs.

If he's willing to walk away from that contract and become a UFA, then sure. Otherwise, hell no.

and we'll all certainly feel miserable about that 12 year contract

gizmo12688 06-24-2012 01:33 PM

I'm for it if they take Jovo and his contract.

Sports24-7 06-24-2012 01:37 PM

For me it all depends on what the Panthers are giving up. If they give a big contract and a mid-level prospect I'd be all for it. Luongo is still a premiere goalie in the NHL, and while he has struggled in the playoffs, Quick showed what an elite goalie can do for a team if he's hot come playoff time.

Pantherkidd101 06-24-2012 01:42 PM

Yes. Bring back Olli, too.

Tuco 06-24-2012 02:13 PM

Hell no. Not even for free. Re the 2012 Off season thread for reasoning.
