The reason why we'll be on Part X before July 1 rolls around:

Quote:

Armed with salary cap space — and a captain they believe can serve as hockey’s finest pitchman — the Penguins aim to go nuclear when NHL free agency opens July 1.

Their plan is to pursue the two top players on the market, Nashville defenseman Ryan Suter and New Jersey winger Zach Parise, sources told the Tribune-Review this weekend at the NHL Entry Draft.

Team sources said Crosby soon will sign a new contract in the range of 10 to 13 years with an average annual salary of between $9 million and $10 million and will try to recruit Parise, his longtime friend, and Suter.

Continue.

This could be the thread we all shout out "PARISE! ZOMG ZOMG ZOMG!!! NOW SUTER WTF!!! I LOVE YOU SHERO!!!"

Ahhhhh...

ColePens 06-24-2012 09:57 PM

I lol'd quite a bit at the thread title.

Beauner 06-24-2012 09:58 PM

Whoever asked about Iginla and whoever answered that we could get him, thank you for making me fantasize about Parise-Crosby-Iginla for a solid 5 minutes.

TheRollingPuck 06-24-2012 10:06 PM

Much like Rossi, I'm pretty sure the title is fabricated ********.

SinfulCobraZ 06-24-2012 10:07 PM

 Love that title.

Anyway, getting back on topic....

What do you guys think of Parise...Worth that 3.75 million we are planning on giving him?

redsono93 06-24-2012 10:10 PM

Any good undrafted players Ray should target?

Yes.

Parise.

:sarcasm:

SEALBound 06-24-2012 10:16 PM

Haven't had a chance to voice this...but I'm a little bummed that we didn't get Brunner. He got signed for pretty reasonable too, IMHO. Hope thats one doesn't come back a mistake...but if we get Parise who gives a hoot.

Flat Stanley 06-24-2012 10:16 PM

Question.

With the NHL telling teams to operate under a $70.3M salary cap, isn't that an idea that that's what the Cap will be in the new CBA, or at least close to it? I keep reading comments saying it's going to go down and the Pens have no chance at signing a Parise or a Suter.

Were those comments from Pens fans? Because I think a lot of them just pooped their pants at us signing either.

We're gonna have to find the right pic for this one.

SCUDeriMISSILE 06-24-2012 10:30 PM

"Going nuclear" is such a Rossi-ism.

"Simple Rob?" Too obvious, maybe.

On a side note, it's a little depressing that Paul Martin is actually trending nationwide on Twitter right now, and it's only because Pens fans are mocking the guy.

Randy Butternubs 06-24-2012 10:38 PM

Poor Paul Martin. :(

No, but I'm just wondering. I don't think they will drop the Salary Cap back down by $6M or more after they told teams to operate under $70.3M, teams like to spend to the cap, if the cap does decrease, do you think Shero has an idea on how much money he can spend this summer?

jmelm 06-24-2012 10:46 PM

The one thing I absolutely agree with in that article, however, is that Despres is most assuredly on the block as plan B if we don't get Suter or Parise. I think the fact that the Pens drafted 2 Dmen in the 1st round AND want to go after Suter means they like Despres -- maybe even a lot -- but that they don't think he has top pairing potential, and perhaps isn't quite the messiah some Pens' fans make him out to be.

I was going to post a separate thread of proposals for winger options if we didn't land Parise; but I will agree with JTG that there will be no room for any additional forwards (i.e. Setoguchi, Whitney) if we are successful in landing Parise. In that case, the balance of the top 6 will be comprised of guys from within.

Trade options for the Pens if we didn't include Parise are: Ryan, Setoguchi, Colin Wilson. Of those guys, the latter two could be had without a King's ransom (i.e. for Despres straight up).

Free agent options in the event that Parise were not to sign, would include: Semin, Samuelsson, Whitney, P.A. Parenteau (if healthy), and perhaps even Olli Jokinen. None of those guys are particularly appealing, however, and all would be deemed experiments that wouldn't get more than a 1-year trial. That's why I think a trade is more likely if we didn't land Parise.

As additional trade options, if those didn't work out: I would list a number of Toronto players (Kulemin, Kadri, Frattin, MacArthur, Ashton), for which there may also be a deal centred around Despres, but I don't see Toronto or Pens making that kind of move likely until much later in the summer or training camp/pre-season.

I disagree with Rossi on another topic, however: that the Pens would trade their 1st for Ryan Suter's rights, even if it was conditional upon him signing. No chance. In a cap world with an expensive payrol and needing a steady influx of good, inexpensive talent, I don't see us moving a 1st in what's supposed to be the best draft in years. IF we trade that pick, it's for an elite forward, like Ryan or Iginla at the deadline if Flames rebuild, or perhaps Brendan Morrow if he rebounds with a strong year and Dallas continues to rebuild.

That's the big question for every team that spends to the cap. How the Pens and other cap-spending teams treat next week should be pretty telling as to how the owners expect the new CBA will operate.

This is where having a cap guru for an assistant GM really pays off.

eXile59 06-24-2012 10:54 PM

I know a lot of the talk about the cap going down is coming from Wings fans that are very upset with the idea of us getting Suter & in a full out panic about the idea of us getting him & Parise.

And a lot are coming up with the idea that we will dismantle our core as we have to extend Malkin, Crosby and Letang.
