Not surprising as he was overpaid last year. Nice to see Alui got one I liked the way he played.

CALGARY, AB -- The Calgary Flames announced today that the following five players have received qualifying offers from the club:

Goaltender

Leland Irving

Forwards

Akim Aliu

Mikael Backlund

Paul Byron

Blair Jones

The following players did not receive qualifying offers:

Blake Comeau

Ryley Grantham

Logan MacMillan
Interesting, I'm glad they gave the qualifying offers to the players listed. I'm not surprised that Comeau did not get a qualifying offer.

Happy they aren't keeping comeau

At that price, yeah. If they brought him back for a fourth line capacity at a fourth line salary, that'd be fine I think. Then again I'd probably rather just save the cap space and give it to a kid from Abby.

I dunno man they guy proved nothing last year unless flames signed to to a two way 600000 dollar contact to be a fourth line grinder then I'd be ok with it , but I'd rather give his position to a guy like aliu, or Byron

Everything as expected and totally the right decisions IMO. I was a little bit worried they might let Jones go but I'm glad they didn't.

Jones and aliu

Someone tell me I'm not the only guy who thought Blair Jones must be like 35 by now.

He still very young hasnt even pleated a full season yet

Fleury14 06-25-2012 01:25 PM

Hmm, didn't realize Brian Connelly was a UFA...

But, yeah, was expected on Comeau, no one is paying him $2.5m for next season.

saillias 06-25-2012 01:37 PM

I don't see any reason to keep Comeau at all. Start fresh. He doesn't fill a need on this team.

Sean Monahan 06-25-2012 01:38 PM

I think they will bring him back. Didn't qualify him because it'd require at least 80% of previous salary (if I remember correctly), which would be about 2m

I still think Comeau can be an effective player. Solid defensively and has the ability to put the puck it, when he's not shooting it wide :P

Yeah, when. The guy can't hit water if he was shooting off a boat.

The Gnome 06-25-2012 01:50 PM

We need a 3rd line RW who can hit and take care of business. If we can sign Comeau for cheap then do it. Him or Tootoo IMO.

We really need to get more grit in the lineup. one forward and one dman

Carkner and Tootoo/Comeau would work.

In NHL 12, I signed Carkner, Gaustad, and Kaleta. I was trying to stay realistic. I think the Flames have a realistic shot at all of those guys.

Stewie Griffin 06-25-2012 02:05 PM

I'm fine if they pursue Comeau as a UFA, but not at $2.5 million.

Flamester 06-25-2012 03:05 PM

I'd rather have jordin tootoo than comeau

Calculon 06-25-2012 04:03 PM

I would rather the Flames re-sign Moss than Comeau.

Also of note, the Jets didn't qualify John Negrin.

JurassicTunga 06-25-2012 04:09 PM

@SUNRandySportak: Flames GM Jay Feaster said the club will try to re-sign Blake Comeau and had talks.

Nordberg 06-25-2012 04:15 PM

I like Comeau, if we can get him signed cheap short-term it would be nice to try him out in a new system. He is fast, hits and does possess some scoring potential. Could be a steal if signed somewhere close to league minimum. I think he would have a hard time getting more than that somewhere else unless a team likes him for some reason and needs to get to the cap floor.

Id take Comeau for as high as 1.5M.

I think he is pretty underrated around here for what he can bring to the table. There is no reason he couldn't have a bounce back year playing 3rd line minutes.

I agree with this too... Towards the end of the year Comeau started to play with a bit of an edge. If he really embraces the idea of becoming a true pest I think he could be a really effective 3rd line player without getting into a ton of penalty trouble (see Jordin Tootoo).
