Jokinen heading to free agency

Source tells me it's official: Olli Jokinen's days with the Flames are over and he will head to free agency July 1.
So who signs him?

sal00 06-28-2012 12:05 PM

Didn't the hawks fans keep saying they need a 2C? They can probably use him if he can sign for a decent price. Another possible option could be Anaheim if they want to stock up some depth without having to pay a premium. But either way I can see him demanding for at least 3.5-4mil a year.

Eskimo44 06-28-2012 12:06 PM

Hartikainen-Jokinen-Paajarvi

How does that sound Edmonton. Grit-Goalscoring-Playmaking, all sizable players with Finnish last names. I could dig it.

Ziggy Stardust 06-28-2012 12:06 PM

Ducks will sign Jokinen. They need a #2 C.

He really would probably be a very good fit there.

Duskog 06-28-2012 12:07 PM

Hawks, Leafs, Oilers (unlikely I think), Ducks, maybe the Panthers would take him back.

Isn't Paajarvi Swedish?

I can also see him demanding 3+ years, which would be more of a dealbreaker to me.

I don't understand Feaster. If you're trying to make the playoffs, why not the keep the guy? It's not like he's scared by risky terms, as evidenced by the wideman signing.

Anyway, Chicago should look into him. Doesn't solve the faceoff issue, but he's the best UFA center and has become quite decent on defense. Maybe he is willing to take a little less for a shot at the cup, like about 3,5 to 4m per for 2 years.

If he wants to cash in on his last big contract, I could see him getting 5m from a desperate team.

Edgeworth* 06-28-2012 12:09 PM

Leafs will target.

Him and Allen probalby only priority moves. Still need a big two-way center to play with Kessel and Lupul and Jokinen fits the bill perfectly, also benefits in Carlyle's system imo. Of course it would need to come with someone being moved out but since the cap is being pushed to 70M Toronto has more then enough to get a contract done. And as much as people will throw fits about Connolly and Jokinen not being a true #1C he's pretty darn close, looked great on the Flames all year and was very strong on both sides of the puck.

Half and half, raised in Sweden (hence i only said last names were Finnish). His mom is of Finnish decent and thats where the Paajarvi comes from, his dad is Swedish and thats where the Svensson comes from. Svensson is apparently the Swedish equivant of Smith, so Magnus took the last name Paajarvi as it has more personality so to speak.

Wouldn't surprise me to see one of the teams pay $5M per for 3 years. He's a top 6 center with size available at free agency, which is a rare commodity.

sweHockeypunk21 06-28-2012 12:11 PM

I could see San Jose being interested in adding him as a #3C, and move him up when people get injured.

ShootIt 06-28-2012 12:11 PM

Panthers plz. Laus's favorite player lol

He is Swedish but that name is Finnish.

Anyways, Olli is capable of 50 pts and decent 2-way game. But its interesting to see how much money he wants.

IMO He should take a paycut and go to a contending team. Settle for 3rd line role and have awesome depth at center.

medhatcanuck 06-28-2012 12:11 PM

Hahahaha Toronto please!!!!!!!!!

Lupul-Jokinen-Kessel

Why not, the fans have been clamoring for a bigger center.

Hall-Hopkins-Eberle
Hemsky-Gagner-Yakupov
Hartikainen-Jokinen-Paajarvi
Smyth-Horcoff-Jones
Eager-Belanger-Petrell

A couple veteran centers who can check and play tough opposition, and a couple young lines with unreal firepower. Everybody in the bottom 6 has size and can play up if need be.

Flat Stanley 06-28-2012 12:14 PM

Florida Panthers did just put Santorelli on waivers, and Jokinen played the best hockey of his career in Florida. Could be a good fit for both teams.

Woulnd be bad idea if they get 1 - 2 year deal.. Even though he sucks, hes miles ahead of Bozak

Panthers Rock 06-28-2012 12:14 PM

At the right price, wouldn't be surprised to see Jokinen come back to the Panthers. Center is our thinnest position and I don't think Huberdeau is about to center the 2nd line.

He was very good for the Flames this year. He seems to have evolved a lot as a player the past few seasons.

Ducks have too much Finnish pull not to at least make an attempt at signing him. Im not saying he'll take a discount to come to Anaheim in order to play with the other Finns but it is likely somewhere that he sees as a fit and it would definitely be a fit from the Ducks perspective.

GMBM does have to start spending some mula if he even wants to ice a team next season and I see the Joker as a decent start as long as its not for a ****-ton of money or a long contract.

canovin 06-28-2012 12:16 PM

Oilers could use him for a year until our new shining 2013 1st round pick center comes to play.
