The Dallas Stars announced today the club has signed forward Ray Whitney to a two-year, $9 million contract through the 2013-14 season ($4.5 million per season).

Whitney, 40, collected 77 points (24 goals, 53 assists) in 82 games for Phoenix last season, good for 12th in the league in points, and earned Second-Team All-NHL honors. Among league leaders, he was sixth in assists and ninth in plus/minus (+26), and he led the Coyotes in points, assists and plus/minus.

“Ray Whitney was among the most productive players in the league last season and showed he remains extremely capable and dangerous,” Stars General Manager Joe Nieuwendyk said. “He’s a winner, a competitor and a leader, and we’re very excited he’ll be a Dallas Star.”

Aw yea. The wizard has landed.

Ryder last year, Whitney this year. Got the guys we wanted. Nice.

Jere26 07-01-2012 12:46 PM

Great signing.

Nullus Reverentia 07-01-2012 12:46 PM

This is really nice. Got another, great, top 6 forward.

Stars99Lobo37 07-01-2012 12:47 PM

Like it a lot.

MB94 07-01-2012 12:47 PM

2 years? 9 mill over the 2 years? eh ..... i'm not that excited about the signing. That's just me

Alistar 07-01-2012 12:48 PM

huh.. thought you guys would be really pissed off about this

Whitney is a great PP presence who can still more than hold his own at even strength even against the toughest players on the other team.

Just hope that age doesn't catch up to him (it will)

Ub the Bub 07-01-2012 12:48 PM

Nice... Sure, he's really old so not something to build on for the future but in short term he can help turn the trend and get some confidence back into the franchise...

Dalfan 07-01-2012 12:48 PM

Sweet.

KiedisA 07-01-2012 12:49 PM

Bye Bye Parise...

tyratoku 07-01-2012 12:49 PM

Like I said over on the main board thread. I really like this signing for Dallas.

What does your Top-6 look like now? Is Whitney being looked at as a short-term replacement for Ribiero until one of your prospects come in, or...?

BigG44 07-01-2012 12:50 PM

My guess is :

Whitney-Benn-???
Eriksson-?/Eakin-Ryder

I'd say:

Whintey-Benn-Ryder
Morrow-Eakin/Glennie/FA-Eriksson

If we can sign Parise (Not going to happen) this team will be loaded on wing lol.

Yes. We need top 6 stopgaps for a year or two until some our youth develops. And we need playmakers. Perfect fit.

As of now we're unsure of our top 6. Still need to see what else Joe does. Right now it'd be:

Whitney-Benn-Ryder
Morrow-Eakin-Eriksson

Stars99Lobo37 07-01-2012 12:54 PM

We gave him a bloody no movement clause...

Quote:

@DarrenDreger Whitney's deal includes no-move clause and modified no-trade clause. He can suplly 10 team list upon request. $1 mil in bonus. $8 mil salary

piqued 07-01-2012 12:56 PM

Well yeah, it's mandatory for any player trying to sign here.

CRSeven 07-01-2012 12:57 PM

I like it :)

No point of a NMC since he's a 35+ contract anyways right? Even burying him in the AHL wouldn't matter on the cap hit.

10 team NTC isn't a huge deal. If we wanted to move him at a deadline we still could.

This one I understand. At 40 years old .... he should not have to worry about getting sent to the minors. The trade part of that clause is limited. So they could still move him pretty easily.

Could, but it's like even if players don't end up asking for (in the case of Daley at least), GMJN insists on that being part of a contract for whatever reason.

piqued 07-01-2012 12:59 PM

Yeah it's a non-issue. We'd only be trading him in the 2nd year to contenders anyway that would already be on the list most likely.

They aren't worried about sending him to the AHL for cap savings though so I don't think that matters. The point is ... he's 40 years old, and there's a legitimate risk his game will fall off.

Should his game fall off enough, they could have said screw it and put him in the minors to make room for a young guy. This means he's in Dallas only. As a 40 year old guy, it makes sense to protect yourself from riding a bus ... even if your skills fall off.

Love the signing, pretty much everything we need. PP presence, top 6 winger, playmaker, stopgap. Not sure you can get much better.

We could've given him 6M and I wouldn't care tbh, term is all I care about right now.

I like what BigG posted for that top 6. A prospect on Benn's wing (or Parise...?) and we're set.
