Jets sign Alex Ponikarovsky (1 year, $1.8M)

1 year deal 1.8 million. Reunited with Antro.

good signing

Primetimey 07-01-2012 03:02 PM

Good deal considering the prices Prust and Burish went at.

allan5oh 07-01-2012 03:02 PM

Value seems ok.

tbcwpg 07-01-2012 03:06 PM

Got some good cup run experience too. Big winger to fight in the corners, liked him with NJ and TOR, not so much with PIT and LA. One year only so not bad. Hope jokinen is next

wpgsilver 07-01-2012 03:07 PM

Good signing, I thought he'd be worth pursuing, but I wasn't sure if we'd have interest.

embracedbias 07-01-2012 03:08 PM

Glad to see Antro and Poni back together

Good signing for you guys. He was clutch in the playoffs for us.

Gump Hasek 07-01-2012 03:10 PM

All we need to do is to bring Darcy Tucker out of retirement!

Or re-sign Wellwood and we'll have the "frustrating former Maple Leafs trifecta".

Huffer 07-01-2012 03:25 PM

If we can get the necessary pieces that allow us to use Poni on the third line, this will be a huge upgrade over our 3rd line last year.

If we are expecting to use this guy on the 2nd line I think we are going to be dissapointed.

Guardian17 07-01-2012 03:33 PM

The Jets are getting bigger.

I think this is a good signing.

WJG 07-01-2012 03:47 PM

I like it as a depth signing, but I hope we're not done yet.

Let's hope that's all it is. Poni will be a nice 3rd liner who can jump up and play a bigger role every once and awhile.

Good signing. Guy like Poni might thrive here.

Agree. When I first seen we signed Ponikarovsky, I was pretty let down, i'm not a big fan of his. Then I remembered he had some pretty good chemistry with Antropov, so this could actually work out nicely as a depth signing.

Really hoping we sign Tootoo. And if the reports are accurate in Olli Jokinen has turned the page in his career in terms of dedication and commitment, both on the ice as well as how he takes care of himself, I wouldn't mind him on a 2 year deal.

A bit surprised to see Mason leave. Hedberg would be a solid option as a replacement.

We'll see what we do, if anything.

Didn't catch much of his CAR time, but in LA despite his disappointing offensive game, he was huge on the forecheck and on the shutdown 3rd line. I have no doubt he will face some heat here since his speed is not great, but he is gritty in the corners and out front (doesn't out and out hit all too often, but battles hard), very good on the cycle. If Poni and Antro play together that line will be very very hard to get the puck away from. I think a Poni - Antro - Machacek line could be great just like the Poni - Handzus - Simmonds line for LA as a shutdown 3rd line that cycles and grinds away at opponants while being a rock defensively and chips in some offense.

Captain Willard 07-01-2012 04:56 PM

A good deal for Winnipeg for sure, I thought Toronto pulled the pin way too early on Poni and Nik and I am curious to see what they could do reunited again. Both very big strong boys and we could use some of that size up front. Sure disappointed they didn't re-sign Mason though.

Rhodes 81 07-01-2012 05:00 PM

if you don't expect too much offensively but just want a solid third liner to play excellent defense, provide good zone time, and grind out a couple goals every once in a while you should be happy. if you expect a top 6 player, he'll be run out of town pretty quick.

depending on what signings you guys make from here on out, a poni-slater-antro or poni-antro-x 3rd line would be great defensively and a great cycle line, imo.

allan5oh 07-01-2012 05:01 PM

I think this is a good deal because it could possibly light a fire under Antropovs ass.

We need 3rd liners badly. We don't really have any. I think this is a great signing because it could also motivate Antropov a bit.
