‪#NHLJets‬ agree to terms with goaltender Al Montoya

Nice! I'm actually happy about this

Hammer Slammer 07-04-2012 05:05 PM

Nice! Not many here seemed big on Montoya, but I love him. When he's hot, he's hot. Would've liked a veteran guy behind Pavs, but the FA market for goalies is slim.

I guess him and Kane made up. :sarcasm:

Mayorov 07-04-2012 05:06 PM

1 year, 600 000

denniscasa 07-04-2012 05:07 PM

Love this signing. :)

DancesWithWookies 07-04-2012 05:09 PM

better hope that him and kane don't meet at a bar lol

$601k, actually.

Like this deal. Low risk for a goaltender who potentially possesses high reward if he pans out.

YWGinYYZ 07-04-2012 05:09 PM

Well, at least we have a backup now.

He's actually played pretty well in spurts - hopefully he can pick his game up to his A level enough that he can cover off 15-25 games for Pavs. I also hope he realizes that this is an opportunity to show what he can do - might be enough impetus to get him to stand on his head.

Decent signing given the slim market - props to Chevy.

Agree with the above posters - the first meet and greet in the dressing room between Kane and Montoya should be interesting. ;)

Paradise 07-04-2012 05:10 PM

Good signing. He's an athletic goalie with room to still develop. He should get his 15-20 games if he's healthy.

DancesWithWookies 07-04-2012 05:10 PM

601k seems like a weird number.... was he holding out for that last grand?

No Name Poster 07-04-2012 05:11 PM

I like it.
If Montoya reaches his potential it could be a steal.

Scheifele55 07-04-2012 05:12 PM

I called this one. Al Montoya will be a great backup for Winnipeg!

The moderator on here said there was a 0% chance he would sign for that low of money.

Makeshift We Are 07-04-2012 05:13 PM

WOW! Very nice signing. Really, REALLY like this.

Moderators are fans too and can speculate with the rest of you. ;) I'm not sure who it was and don't care, but it was his/her opinion.

Navin RJ 07-04-2012 05:14 PM

Pretty good backup and at a very good price.

denniscasa 07-04-2012 05:15 PM

He's gonna need the extra 1k for winter jackets! :)

WJG 07-04-2012 05:16 PM

I've never heard of a player signing for 601,000.

I wonder if that extra $1000 was because Kane ran him last year

bigplay41 07-04-2012 05:19 PM

There's a good scrap between Al Montoya and Cory Crawford on YouTube!

Le Golie 07-04-2012 05:22 PM

I don't hate it but Montoya isn't what I like in a backup. I would rather have a veteran player who doesn't have hot or cold streaks and can just play a steady reliable game.

Montoya looks good some nights, awful some nights and even streaks from period to period some times... You just don't know what you are getting.

The Jets were probably the only team to offer him a one way contract. He still might be in the AHL this season if a better tender shows up on waivers, which is bound to happen in September. He's a good option to have in the mean time if no upgrade opportunity presents itself.

Qorvus 07-04-2012 05:22 PM

What's the story on Montoya? I remember him being a touted prospect (or maybe that was just from being drafted high), then he kind of fizzled, or failed to develop, and I lost track of him.

MrWigglez 07-04-2012 05:23 PM

Good price for 1 year. That solves the backup problem! I wonder if chevy is done?

blues10 07-04-2012 05:25 PM

Any chance we can package Montoya and Enstrom together at the trade deadline?:naughty:

I am not a fan of this signing.

I predict that he will be the 1st Jets goalie mocked by the home crowd at MTS centre. This guy is on or terribly off no in between.

He played on a good college team and a strong US world junior team so he was probably never as good as some people expected. He never turned into an NHL caliber goalie until the Islanders picked him up from the Coyotes (he was playing for their farm team) two years ago. He went on a bit of a tear for the Isles as they finished that season strong. Last year he split time with Nabokov and eventually lost the job after he got flattened by some punk named Kane.

So yeah, drafted about two rounds higher than he should have been and has been a tweener for his whole pro career but had a hot streak of a couple months with the Isles in 2010-11. Other than that he's played like an AHL'er and don't be shocked if he's on the Ice caps at some point.

Huffer 07-04-2012 05:27 PM

That is a very low amount. Wow.
