[BUF] - Kevin Porter

I didnt see a minor FA signings thread but he signed with the Sabres today

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/sabres/...er-winner.html

Duskog 07-05-2012 05:25 PM

Haha you hardly ever see Porter's name mentioned in the news without "Former Hobey Baker winner" somewhere close by. He's an alright 13th/14th forward. He's not usually a liability on the ice, but I wouldn't expect very much from him.

SuperNintendoChalmrs 07-05-2012 05:25 PM

He'll be a Garbage Plate regular in Rochester. :)

DesertDawg 07-05-2012 05:31 PM

he was the best player in the Mueller & Porter 4 Wolski trade!!!

GuidolisK 07-05-2012 06:00 PM

I always liked how Porter played, hope he can find some success in Buffalo.

not THAT bad , but dont expect much from Porter

forsbergavs32 07-05-2012 06:11 PM

He's not horrible....but he's a borderline NHLer at best...If Buffalo keeps Porter's minutes down and keeps him on the 4th line you guys should be okay with him.

ManOnTheMoon 07-05-2012 06:23 PM

Porter is good for about two or three "Where did that come from?" goals a year, and is otherwise remarkable only for his unremarkableness. A good example of a skilled guy in college not quite having the size or strength to translate a good NCAA showing into a good NHL career. He has a journeyman career ahead of him, I think. Whatever, good for him, good for Buffalo.

GrigsAndGirgs 07-05-2012 06:34 PM

The expectation is he will be Rochester bound.

An assumption after talking with Ron Rolston: Unless Kevin Porter has a great camp with the #Sabres, he'll start with the #Amerks.

#Amerks coach Ron Rolston knows Kevin Porter very well. Got to NTDP after Porter left "but I recruited him when I was still at (Bos. Coll)."

Garbage Plate is a local culinary delight in Rochester.

He's a good fit for the Amerks and will keep Rochesterarians away from Pegula HQ with pitchforks.

Rivet52 07-05-2012 06:39 PM

Yep, there's a veteran for Rochester. We lost a bunch of players for the Amerks already this offseason so we needed to get someone and probably still need to get a few more players for down there. We still need a legit 4th line center (hoping for Halpern or a trade) and we already have enough players to play the 4th line wings (McCormick, Kaleta, Ellis, Scott, and possibly Tropp although he should start in Rochester too) so I don't think Porter will make the team but he could be recalled at some point throughout the year.

Can any Avalanche fans give us a scouting report on Porter? I'm not too familiar with him other than he's basically a 13th forward in the NHL.

Not horrible at offense nor defense, basically the definition of serviceable. He went on a bit of a run a year or two ago where he seemed to score some pretty timely goals. I didn't mind him, but after awhile he became very irrelevant and quite redundant after being played for a long stretch of games.

zachws6 07-05-2012 06:49 PM

With out looking up his stats, I will say that I recall hearing his name often during the Broadcast of Blues/Avs games. That could either be bad, or good I guess. lol

Rivet52 07-05-2012 07:01 PM

He wouldn't be capable of being a regular 4th line center would he? We still need to fill that spot and I'd much rather get someone else for it. Porter just seems like another Ellis or McCormick type that shouldn't play every night and is more suited for a 13th forward role.

Again, I'd much rather Porter be used for Rochester (which is indicated he probably will be) and get someone else for our 4th line (again, Halpern or trading for someone are my preference).

Reddawg 07-05-2012 07:49 PM

Paul Szczechura's replacement...not much more than that.

Eh, he's going to be up against Ruff-favorite Matt Ellis for the 12/13 forward slot. Porter's a Rolston fav, he's even mentioned in the Rochester paper that he thinks Kevin will have to work his way up unless he has an amazing camp.

well ok then ... THAT bad :sarcasm:

Bubba Thudd 07-05-2012 09:05 PM

Porter will give 100% of what he has just about every shift.

Unfortunately, 100% of nothing is, well, nothing.

torque 07-05-2012 09:13 PM

From the handful of games I saw him play in Colorado, he looked like one of the fastest players on the ice. I always thought he would be a great 3rd line energy guy.

Honest scouting report?

He's a terrible center. Too small and too ineffective on the dot. He'll give you some defensive effort, but he thinks he's too skilled for a traditional 4th line role. He'd frequently try to force a play in the offensive zone in order to try and work himself back into the lineup, rather than just working hard while on the ice.

People think Stastny declined? Porter is one of the reasons his assists were down, dude simply can't put the puck away even when he's given golden opportunities.

When Quincey was traded, rumors were Porter wasn't too happy and wanted to go with him. Supposedly he was ok being the 13th/14th forward for us, but I have my disbeliefs.

He's probably cut out to be a career AHL star. I think Hensick when I see Porter.

cgf 07-05-2012 10:04 PM

Of course this bum goes from my favorite team to my second favorite team. Hopefully he's just an AHLer cause he's just not good at anything in the NHL, not skilled enough to play top 6, not physical enough or competent defensively enough to be good in your bottom 6. Could be an AHL star though...

danmcn12 07-05-2012 10:16 PM

People wonder why Stazz's point totals declined, well one of his linemates just changed teams and went immediately to the AHL.

During that brutal 2010-2011 season, Porter spent 25% of his TOI with Stastny, Stoa spent 50% of his TOI with Stastny and Yip spent around 17.5% of his TOI with Stastny.

3 AHLers at best (I guess Yip is clinging onto his 4th line spot in Nashville...).

:shakehead

So...More Matty Ellis?
Even if he ends up playing in Buffalo at some point instead of Rochester, I'm down with that. I can't bring myself to dislike players that show strong work ethic like that.
