Hurricanes sign M-A Gragnani for one year at 800K. Very good and affordable signing, still unclear why Vancouver let him go.

WJG 07-11-2012 01:16 PM

I'm surprised he couldn't get a 1-way contract.

Sasha Cares 07-11-2012 01:20 PM

Nice deal for us, but we now have 9 defenseman and 7 of them are PMD

1point21Gigawatts 07-11-2012 01:21 PM

This signing could be a steal for Carolina if he returns to his 10-11 form. Otherwise, even at this price it could be a bust.

M.A. Gragnani was absolutely brutal last season and Sabres fans were glad to be rid of him and his terrible turn-overs. Vancouver clearly wasn't impressed with him and let him walk.

If he is able to find his game again and put up decent numbers, he could really contribute to the hurricane's power play. This is assuming he sees time in the NHL. Sounds like he is AHL bound as a depth signing.

Tim Murray 07-11-2012 01:23 PM

Carolina probably remembers that game winner from 2 seasons back and Lindy's comments afterwards.

When asked why a rookie was in on such a critical time in the game (and the season) Lindy said "we had to get the kid on the ice" or something to that effect.

He can own the AHL.

Andrej Shakira 07-11-2012 01:24 PM

MAG is a good powerplay defenseman and thats about it. His decision making and defensive awareness are pretty terrible IMO.

Chainshot 07-11-2012 01:24 PM

If nothing else, he's a great AHL defenseman who can give the Canes a veteran recall option if they hit injuries who knows his way around the league. If he elevates his game, he could be a nice, cheap NHL addition for a lower pair.

Where are you getting 9 defensemen from? I see 6 on their roster with Gleason, Faulk, Pitkanen, McBain, Corvo, Harrison. That goes up to 7 if you include Gragnani. Unless you think Ryan Murphy will step in and play, that makes it 8. Guessing you are also including Bobby Sanguinetti as part of your 9. Three of those 9 players aren't guaranteed to be on their opening night roster.

AHL replacement for Joslin?

Murphy either has to play in Carolina or go back to Kitchener. I believe he's too young to play in the AHL. And he can't really learn too much else at Kitchener's level, so his spot in Carolina is pretty much guaranteed.

And Sanguinetti performance in Charlotte last season is going to make it real difficult to explain why he's not, at the very least, getting a shot in the NHL.

We have 9 players that need to clear waivers to go to the A, be sent back to Juniors, or are just guaranteed roster spots. That's 9 players that are going to be in camp with the ability to make the roster and if they don't, be lost to the organization for good or for the year. Not sure Sangs or MAG passes through waivers. Although GMs seem to let most guys pass through out of a gentlemens agreement after camp.

To me it looks like a trade is coming or Murphy is going back. But, we actually may carry 8 D to start the season because you know Murphy will get his 9 games in.

jr has said murphy likely wont be sent back to juniors and im pretty sure hes still too young for the ahl. they mentioned the thought of keeping around the team getting occasional looks. i forget if hes young enough for the wjc? if he is thats likely the plan for murphy. they talk about sangs like hes legit for a spot or at least a shot at one after his year last year. gragnani has to be considered a possibility since we just arent that great a team and hes been close for a few years. 9 guys fighting for 7 spots is a legit thought for the canes, though the fight is likely for the seventh spot unless there is a trade. with all the talk the canes are hunting for a legit top 6 forward theres a definite chance we wont look the same at the back end come oct.

sal00 07-11-2012 01:39 PM

So basically Canucks and Canes swapped a call-up Dman...interesting

Girgenburger 07-11-2012 01:40 PM

Good signing for Carolina honestly. He and Enroth carried us to the playoffs the season before last. He's a pretty damn good offensive defenseman, but will make some boneheaded defensive plays. Overall not a bad hockey player. In the right situation I could see him having success. This might just be the right situation in Carolina.

New Sabres Captain 07-11-2012 01:43 PM

"unclear why they let him go?"

Maybe because Grags truly is the epitome of sucks. As a Sabres fan I hope Grags ends up on the top pairing in the NHL for the Canes instead of the top pairing in the AHL, where he belongs.

WinterEmpire 07-11-2012 01:43 PM

I'm very confused by Gragnani. Gillis originally had every intention of giving him an offer before July 1st but than his agent informed him that they would be taking him to arbitration so Gillis never went through on it. Now he signs a contract probably the same or worse to what Gillis would have given him :shakehead

TOML 07-11-2012 01:54 PM

Who's more horrible? Joslin or Gragnani?

I'm gonna go with Joslin. But he's 100k cheaper? Ah, he was bought out. The Canes didn't want to pay him an NHL salary for AHL play. Is that right?

Meh. At this point they both got a long way to go.

lakai17 07-11-2012 01:55 PM

great depth!

kmad 07-11-2012 01:56 PM

"still unclear why Vancouver let him go."

Because he's not an NHL defenseman

You must not have watched him much. Defense is career AHL quality. At the NHL level, he's a PP specialist who makes absolutely terrible decisions with the puck in his own zone. He's actually probably better suited for wing in the NHL if he's gonna get any kind of regular minutes at ES.
