What would it take to land Bernier ?
I recently read Bernier expects to be traded by the LA Kings and i cant say im surprised. They locked up Quick and Bernier is expendable. We do have goalie issues and i believe Bernier can potentially fix that. He's only 23 years old which is fairly young and leaves quite a bit of room for improvement
His save percentage last season was .909 in 16 games and .913 in 25 games in the previous season He would be a good fit here because of his age, potential and the opportunity he would get to solidify himself as the no.1 goalie I really hope we can pick him up this year, but what would it cost us to land him ? what would be fair value ? |
Burke isn't interested in acquiring an inexperienced goalie.

Don't really need him. Reimer has similar stats and more NHL experience. Scrivens is no slouch either. If you're looking for a warm body maybe but otherwise, what's the need exactly?
Greener grass perhaps? |
No reason whatsoever to aquire him, especially with what the Leafs already have.

Yeah i guess you guys made some good points, i think this thread can be closed.

Reimer/Scrivens will be just fine if our team defense improves. How would any goalie deal with the pressure of having to win most games by yourself to many nights? The team is young ,and building and there is no rush imo.
I think Reimer/Scrivens are good enough to go with for quite some time actually, and will be a very difficult duo. |

I'd rather Burke make a push for Niklas Backstrom from the Wild. He's a pending UFA, so less risk. Minnesota is up against the cap so they'd probably like to get the $6 million cap hit off their books, plus they just signed Josh Harding for 3 years and Matt Hackett's NHL numbers in limited duty last year suggest he's ready to come up for a backup role.
Make it happen, Brian! |
I'd feel more comfortable with Reimer/Bernier next season than I would Reimer/Scrivens, but perhaps that's just me.
One would have to think LA isn't in the best negotiating position considering they just signed Quick to a long-term deal and Bernier has made recent comments about being traded. As long as it didn't cost us Kadri or Colborne, I'd be happy with acquiring him. Would probably have to include a 2nd rounder in the package considering that's the going rate for young, inexperienced goaltenders these days (Lindback, Bishop). |
better than nothing
depends what they'd want |

Bernier = bad. Let's move along here, nothing to see.

Not that I agree with this... but we've been down this road before, trading assets for young goalies with plenty of upside, then Toronto eats them alive. |
burke indirectly said he doesn't want bernier
|
Since Bernier has less NHL experience than Reimer and barely has a winning record who cares what it would take to land him? Why go with an unproven goalie that costs assets when they could go with their own unproven goalies that cost them nothing?

Are you implying that Reimer and Scrivens are nothing? Lol |

I really thought that Bernier would have went to Columbus, but then they traded for Bobrovsky to tandem with Mason. And with a little bit more than they gave up for Bob, they could have had Bernier.
Chicago, San Jose or New Jersey are all teams that I could see taking a runner at this guy. All have aging goaltenders and Bernier could be the heir apparent to taking over the job. |
Its a tough sell to pick-up Bernier. If the leafs did a deal like this, it would probably have to include a goalie going the other way.
Scrivens has too much upside at this point (after record setting season in AHL), so trading him doesn't really improve the Leafs much. Perhaps Owuya + Prospect/Pick, but again this basically says to Scrivens that he is 3rd in line, which is probably the wrong message to send to a guy that clearly deserves a shot to start some games this year. I wouldn't be opposed to making this a bigger deal though. For example: Reimer + MacArthur FOR Bernier + Voynov/Loktionov Leafs shed an extra winger, while acquiring a good prospect (Defence or Center). Although i don't know if LA would even want Reimer at this point. |

Doesn't make much sense to exchange an unproven goalie with potential for another. Either one is a gamble, if you're going to give up assets, wouldn't you want some assurance of performance?
