If you could teach your kid one thing about hockey, what would it be?

For me, it would be the value of being a team player. Doesn't matter if you score a goal or make a nice pass, help the team win and you're doing your job.

I've never been a "star" on any team I've played (I like to characterize my playing style as Hal Gill, great when it comes to defense/PK/5on3 PK, pilon in other situations), but my teammates have always appreciated the enthusiasm I have, even from the bench.

Every team needs a guy or two like that.

You just wrote how to make your kid an AHL'er.

I'd teach my kid how to snipe corners and skate like Jeff Skinner.

Puckclektr 07-18-2012 09:46 PM

Have fun. Try your best.

Never said it was about making them NHLers, just a value I'd share with them.

Play the game with heart and soul.

NHL reference: Mike Brown (Tor), Doug Glatt (Thug), Ian Laperriere sp? (Phi)

Be a right handed shot and play with grit, hustle and grind.

JayKing 07-18-2012 09:58 PM

If you don't give your 100% every time you get on the ice no matter if it's for the team or for yourself then get the f out of the rink and come back when you'll be ready

Anton Antoff 07-18-2012 09:59 PM

Keep your head up.

Doug smith is the real guy.

BCShark 07-18-2012 10:09 PM

keep your stick on the ice

^This. I got rocked (unintentionally) when I was younger and had a concussion and really couldn't play after that.

Pilky01 07-18-2012 10:32 PM

Playing with intelligence and control is what will separate you from all the idiots out there just trying to hit stuff.

TheMoreYouKnow 07-18-2012 10:33 PM

Whatever it takes.

Big McLargehuge 07-18-2012 10:35 PM

Play for Philadelphia and you're disowned.

I wouldn't be able to cheer for my kid if he played for Boston. The hatred runs deep. Would show up with a Habs jersey even if his team made it to the SCF.

straka91* 07-18-2012 10:39 PM

Play with passion, do the little things. Practice, practice, practice. You can have all the skill in the world but it also takes heart to make it and be successful in the show.

um 07-18-2012 10:42 PM

always throw the first punch, but serisouly you cant really teach heart so id say teaching him to always pick a corner and not shoot in the goalies chest

Minister of Offence 07-18-2012 10:51 PM

If you aren't doing everything in your power to get on the ice daily in the winter, assuming you have ice available, don't even talk about wanting to be a pro.

Janks 07-18-2012 10:52 PM

Stick on the ice, give it 110%, and pick a corner

Wilch 07-18-2012 11:00 PM

Be buddies or at least in good standings with the commissioner(s) and referees so you can stab people on ice and get away with it.

LegnaRouy 07-18-2012 11:01 PM

Don't listen to your mother. Who cares if you " schooled " that goalie, don't give him a hug so he can feel better about himself :p:

dan1el 07-19-2012 12:08 AM

Cheer for a team Daddy doesn't like, and you've bought yourself a one-way ticket to the orphanage.

I talk to my 9 year old son all the time about playing hockey. The last thing I tell him before he gets on the ice for practice/games/clinics/camps is - have fun and do your best.
