Panthers acquire Casey Wellman

Depth acquisition it appears. C/RW, traded a 2014 5th rounder for him.

“Casey is a young, highly skilled forward who adds more depth to our team,” said Tallon. “He can play both center and right wing and we feel he has the ability to play in a top line role within our team. We look forward to his contributions to our club.”
You trade a 2014 5th round pick and get a top line forward? He probably means for San Antonio.

Hockeycast 07-20-2012 03:12 PM

Really good trade, he played well in Minnesota this year and giving up a fifth doesn't really matter.

Fel 96 07-20-2012 03:16 PM

Nice deal for the Panthers.

I've never watched him play but he had 7 points/2 goals in 14 games (4th line playing time) with Minnesota last year.

Maybe Tallon feels like he can produce with more playing time.

His scouting report makes him seem like a top-6 type of player.

Good AHL player. Maybe he will Santorelli himself into a spot on the second line. Doubtful, but stranger things have happened.

I was thinking the same thing.

Wild thread following him. Seems to be a boom or bust player. Projected top 6 forward. Not a bad pickup. Two-way contract too.

Fel 96 07-20-2012 03:46 PM

^Feel free to give a bump if needed.

Pretty proud of Repik, actually. Wish he would've panned out.

Some pretty sick moves in the AHL video, hope he pans out well, but I'm not gonna get overly excited.

ditto.

Great move, IMO. Gave up a minimal asset for someone who has a shot at contributing offensively. His last season in the NHL he scored a point every 25:28 of icetime. If he busts his ass he might be able to earn that 2nd line center spot, no joke. Give him 15 minutes a night and we might be looking at a 40+ point guy.

Low risk, high reward.

Not a two-way contract. Yet, at least. My understanding is he was qualified with the Rags but didn't sign. Technically he's still an RFA, but as he's been qualified his rights now exclusively belong to us.

Thanks for clearing that up. I agree, he's another low risk, high reward player.

My thoughts excactly!

I don't even mind to give him a chance to start the season as our 2nd line C. Of course I'd prefer a proven 2nd liner, but I'd much much rather take a chance on a young guy like Wellman who has the potential AND a two-way contract than sign a guy like Reinprecht (like we did in the past) and pretend he's a 2nd liner. His production (at the NHL level) has actually been a lot better than Santorellis at the time we picked him up.

Based on his highlights it seems that this kids very effective in front the goal, which could really fit well between a good playmaker Huberdeau and the good shot of Mueller.

The best part still is that we gave up basically nothing for him and didn't really use any cap space for him. If he doesn't pan out we can send him to San Antonio and maybe try to trade someone to fill that top 6 forward position after the season has started.

Good move Tallon and welcome to Florida Casey Wellman! :yo:

OK thanks for the info. Probably will get a two-way/very cheap one-way contract though. So doesn't make that big of a difference.

Well, low risk at least.

Mogo 07-20-2012 05:04 PM

Lock him up with a 3 year deal before he blossoms.. I hope :)

gizmo12688 07-20-2012 05:40 PM

I like that we gave up pracitially nothing to get him. Hope he pans out.
