[NYR/FLA] Wellman traded for a 2014 5th round pick

Florida Panthers ‏@FlaPanthers
RED ALERT: #FlaPanthers acquire C/RW Casey Wellman from #NYR in exchange for a 5th-round 2014 #NHLDraft pick. Details:

McDonagh 07-20-2012 02:15 PM

I thought Wellman was decent? By all means this is a minor minor minor trade, I just thought the Rangers considered Wellman one of the first call ups.

Inferno 07-20-2012 02:17 PM

now lets flip this 5th for Nash.

That Howson drives a hard bargain.

NYR Viper 07-20-2012 02:18 PM

With Kolarik back and Newbury down in the A, maybe they wanted to open up a spot and they didn't see Wellman as part of their future plans. A 5th '14 for Christensen? I'm good with that.

RangerBoy 07-20-2012 02:20 PM

Wellman didn't sign his QO by July 15 which is rare for a player without any leverage. The Rangers still retained the player rights. Maybe Wellman felt he didn't have a chance to crack the Rangers roster and wanted out.

The Rangers acquired Wellman for a 7th in 2013 and traded him for a 5th in 2014. The 7th in 2013 was sent to Minny when they didn't re-sign Christensen.

Take that all of you who say we are doing nothing this offseason!

Jarkko Immonen 07-20-2012 02:22 PM

Don't like it. The Whale's best offensive player. Always thought he should get a chance in the NHL.

Hmm, wasn't aware about the QO. Interesting.

LordsCup* 07-20-2012 02:23 PM

Thats disappointing since he is a good AHL player.

Oh well.

broadwayblue 07-20-2012 02:37 PM

yawn

Kershaw 07-20-2012 02:39 PM

Awful trade.

Wellman is better than anyone on our 4th line. More stone handed grinders/goons for Torts I guess.

Vitto79 07-20-2012 02:41 PM

hmmm too bad but yea he was not going to make the lineup anyway being realistic. So it was EC and a 7th for a 5th then.

joy we got a 5th back and we moved one this yr for Johnny I punch people in the face Scott

Aweful? The guy was basically a nobody who didn't sign his QO. We dumped his ass and got a pick for him in the process. If the guy didn't want to be here at least they maximized his value while they could. And are we really that worried about losing a possible 4th liner?

He wasn't given a chance.

With Minnesota, he put up respectable numbers.

silverfish 07-20-2012 02:49 PM

If he wasn't going to cut the NYR lineup it's good they got some value back for him.

13 points in 41 career NHL games.....

Stu Bickel has 9 in 51.

Thats hardly respectable.

So #CTWhale lost Wellman, Deveaux, Audy-Marchessault & Zuccarello from last season. Lots of offense to replace

He's not a grinder and not a 4th line type of player--so what's your point? The Rangers traded for him over half way through last year--extended him a qualifying offer and he didn't sign it. We didn't give him a chance? or he didn't give the Rangers a chance?

Just like JAM, I'm sure they made zero attempt to re-sign Wellman. :sarcasm:

KingWantsCup 07-20-2012 03:04 PM

I don't think Wellman was given a fair shake here. Oh well, I'm still okay with this. I like how we draft in the middle rounds.

The Rangers preferred Cody Almond over Wellman. Almond left the Wild organization to play in Switzerland next season. He signed a 3 year deal.

Bluenote13 07-20-2012 03:30 PM

Oh Well Man, what can ya do ?
