Penguins #5 prospect

Beau Dangles awkwardly skates into 4th place. Surprised any forward cracked the top 5. Added Uher.

2012 poll results
#1 Joe Morrow (45.37% in #1 poll, 52.00% in runoff)
#2 Simon Després (43.98% in #1 poll, 48.00% in runoff)
#3 Brian Dumoulin (38.15%)
#4 Beau Bennett (35.50%)

JTG 07-25-2012 05:51 PM

Pretty surprised Dangles won that one.

Love the commentary, haha.

Pouliot city again. Add D'Agostino (broken record =P )

Sidney the Kidney 07-25-2012 06:29 PM

Voted Pouliot -- for the third time in a row -- because of his upside.

My next three are going to be Pouliot (this round), Maatta, and Harrington. Not sure which order I'll go with Maatta and Harrington. I'm leaning toward Maatta because I think he's got a higher offensive ceiling, while still having a solid defensive game.

Harrington this round, then Maatta, then Pouliot.

I'm happy at least that the talent level of these prospects aren't that far off from each other.

Agreed. Though I would have swapped Bennett and Harrington.

td_ice 07-25-2012 07:14 PM

Not going in the order I would vote for, but now picking between the two players that are the front runners this round. Going Harrington. (would go Tangradi, but would be a wasted vote)

mrzeigler 07-25-2012 07:48 PM

For the first time in this process, this is a toss up for me.

Last year's 2nd-rounder who's coming off a great season? This year's 8th-overall pick, whom the Penguins brass are high on? This year's 23rd overall pick, whom many had ranked above the guy we took 8th? The 2010 fourth-rounder who, in his first year in the OHL, notched 39 goals in 68 games? The 23-year-old forward who, despite not making an impact in previous stints on the team, likely will get a significant shot this season?

My head tells me go with one of the defensemen, but this vote is a wish and a prayer. I'd love for the big German to have a monster year in 2012-13. Tom Kühnhackl it is.

Ziggyjoe21 07-25-2012 07:53 PM

8th overall pick vs 22nd overall pick in same draft vs 2nd rounder from last year coming off a good season. All 3 are still mere prospects but Pouliot has by far the highest ceiling.

Pouliot should take this poll easily.

Epic Neal Time 07-25-2012 08:00 PM

Should be Pouliot.

Not sure I believe that. Maatta was ranked higher in most of the rankings I saw.

I voted Harrington because he played his best hockey this past season on the highest stage he could have possibly played at, and he's a year further in his development.

As true as that may be, fact is that Pouliot went in the top 10, and Maatta fell several spots below where he was projected to go. That should count towards something. Also, Pouliot seems to have higher upside. From what I read, it seems to be a Brian Campbell (Pouliot) vs Paul Martin (Maatta) esque comparison. Correct me if I'm wrong tho.

I would think that were scouts ranked guys higher would matter more. I mean, what about that kid went in the 1st for Calgary? Word is he was a mid-round pick for most teams...does that make him better that guys who were legitimate 1st round prospects? Should that count for something? All it means is 1 team really liked him.

The comparison I hear most for Maatta is Timonen. I don't personally get the Campbell comparison with Pouliot because Campbell has always shown the ability to step up and take guys out. From everything I've read on Pouliot, he has pretty much no physical dimension to his game at all.

I would definitely compare Maatta to Timonen personally as well.

I compare Pouliot to Duncan Keith, and Joe Morrow to Brian Campbell

Where they were picked doesn't really matter TBH. Most lists had Maatta a head of DP, so the assumption that DP is the better because Shero took him at 8th is a little off IMO.

Also, from what I read of the prospect camp Maatta was more impressive than DP.

If where a player was drafted is the end all of each prospects value we could just line up all our prospects by where they were picked and be done in 5 min.

EatonBabies 07-25-2012 09:04 PM

Pouliot. Definitely thought he should have been gone at #3.

Add D'Agostino.
