OTTAWA - The Ottawa Senators announced today that the club has bought out the remainder of the contract of forward Bobby Butler, which was valid through the end of the 2012-13 National Hockey League season.

A native of Marlborough, Mass., Butler appeared in 94 games over the past three NHL campaigns with Ottawa, recording 37 points (16 goals, 21 assists) and 22 penalty minutes. He was held scoreless in three post-season contests with the club (each in 2012 against the New York Rangers).

Any opinions on him as a player Sens fan?

I am interested because I went to school with his cousins.

GoneFullHextall 07-26-2012 12:49 PM

was he out of options to be sent down to Binghamton? didnt think he was that bad of a player for Ottawa.
hope he can make it back. always had a soft spot for him since hes a UNH kid.

Ziggy Stardust 07-26-2012 12:49 PM

Twitter is working?

GoneFullHextall 07-26-2012 12:51 PM

yes Butler getting waived caused twitter to crash:sarcasm:

caley 07-26-2012 12:52 PM

Garrioch has been suggesting this is a possibility for a while now. I think he'll get a shot somewhere, likely on a 2-way deal.

Reign Nateo 07-26-2012 12:52 PM

1-way contract, a scorer that doesn't score, had a tough season last year, but I'm sure someone will give him a chance.

HockeyGuruPitka 07-26-2012 12:53 PM

Are these buyout waivers?

SpezDispenser 07-26-2012 12:54 PM

Huh, I'm really surprised. I owe Garrioch an apology for not believing him.

The Waffler 07-26-2012 12:54 PM

I'm just glad he wasn't bought out.

Edit: (yet)

I didn't even read the OP.

But I read that point elsewhere, and came back here to correct myself.

His cousins are probably better at hockey.
Mediocre skill, decent energy, not a liability defensively. Career third or fourth liner and we have a boatload of those already.

WJG 07-26-2012 01:14 PM

I'm a bit surprised they gave up on him so quickly.

He was awful last season, but he looked great the year before. He looked like he could be a future 20+ goal scorer.

Sureves 07-26-2012 01:15 PM

Kind of surprised to be honest.

BK201 07-26-2012 01:17 PM

so he's on unconditional waivers? im not so sure how this all works but i assume he can be picked up?

i think flames, and islanders may have an interest. not sure who else he's put up ok numbers before but not great last year.

Marty Straka 07-26-2012 01:18 PM

Too many NHL ready forwards and a victim of his 1-way contract... Had he been on a two-way he'd probably still be a senator.

Yes.

Tyler Biggs 07-26-2012 01:20 PM

I wouldn't have mind seeing the Leafs give him a 2 way deal and let him develop on the Marlies for a bit and then trade him later on and get something in return, or keep him and let him develop into a scoring winger for us hopefully someday. Too bad he is on a 1 way deal. And too bad we have so many contracts.

TSA0402 07-26-2012 01:26 PM

I guess this means Alfredsson is coming back?

Perro 07-26-2012 01:31 PM

Isn't the buyout period over?
