Eric Wellwood

I haven't seen to much talk of him so far this off season and wanted to gauge what everyone's opinion on the impact he will have this upcoming season. I was personally very impressed with his game the little he played last season. I think he could have a bigger then expected impact on the team depending on his role. He could definitely find himself some top-9 ice time if he plays well enough, his speed is such an asset and i think he has enough skill to finish off some plays. I think we could see 30-40 pts, thoughts?

4thline4life 07-27-2012 11:51 AM

i think him-couts-read is a sick, sick 3rd line. so much speed on the outside as well as very defensively capable...could be the line we see in the last minute this year.

Spongolium* 07-27-2012 12:00 PM

I have no doubt that he's already penciled in for the third line wing next to Couturier.

He made every line better that he was on last year. He also saw out all 11 play-off games. No doubt he's on the big team this year. His speed will be a massive boost to the PK system aswell

Lots of PK'ers :D

Wellwood
Giroux
Couturier
Voracek
Fedetenko
Talbot

he's nothing special IMO. A fourth liner with speed who can kill penalties with potential to step up to the 3rd line. He'll probably split the season with the Phantoms and the Flyers

Agreed

kicksave27 07-27-2012 01:13 PM

He might not be "something special" But I thoroughly enjoy watching the guy skate 2xspeed of anyone else out there. My God he is fast.

Brozgalov 07-27-2012 01:57 PM

Given the PK situation, do you think there is any possibility that Lavy pulls Giroux off the PK? Obviously he's great at it and is a threat for SHG, but I wonder if he'd rather him be more rested for 5v5 and PP time?

Just a thought, I love him on the PK, but I also wouldn't mind that train of thought either.

The amount of love Upshall got for doing the same thing is incredible.

haha...good call

maybe Wellwood will get lucky one day and find a GM dumb enough to pay him $3.5m

Dr. Octagon 07-27-2012 04:38 PM

Speed to burn...no idea what to do when he gets there. Doesn't hit, doesn't score

hckyplayer8 07-27-2012 04:44 PM

Give him more time with the team and I bet he figures it out by the ASG.

It's good to know that you've made this conclusion before Wellwood has played in even 30 NHL games. He's got speed to burn, and his hands are a lot better than some people give him credit for. He'll never be a thirty goal scorer, but he'll be a third liner who's versatile and a pain in the *** to play against. I take that for a sixth rounder every day of the week.

He forechecks very well. He may not put bonecrushing hits on but he can check pretty well.

FlyersFan61290 07-27-2012 06:03 PM

20-30 pt max 3rd liner.

I'm still hoping Paul can add Doan or another top 6 six winger without subtracting which would effectively push Wellwood to the 4th line/Phantoms.

Couts hasn't filled out yet so that line would get pushed around a lot.

Doubt it. G brings an offensive threat to the pk which they wouldn't have otherwise. Richie was in the same situation when he was here.

Erza Scarlet 07-27-2012 06:45 PM

he's fast.

LetsGoFlyers1825 07-27-2012 06:57 PM

Fine guy on the 4th line, but I am already pulling hairs out at the tought of Talbot, Wellwood, or Fedotenko playing on our 3rd line. I like all 3 of those guys, but I want that as our 4th line.

And while on the topic of the 4th line, please no Sestito, Shelley, or Rinaldo please

jd2210 07-27-2012 08:05 PM

Wellwood is probably in our top 2 or three for speed and he has great energy. I wish he could score though. I'm 100% fine with him on the third or 4th line.

Agreed at this point.

I like him because he can really fly and seems like a nice person, but he's not physical and doesn't have good hands.

Damaged Goods 07-27-2012 08:27 PM

If he's Upshall 2.0 (which I think is realistic) that would be fantastic value.

He was fantastic defensively last year. His speed disrupts a lot of plays on the backcheck.

bp spec 07-27-2012 09:13 PM

I like him. Crazy fast, and decent defensively.

GTopCheese 07-27-2012 09:49 PM

Work on his offensive skills during the offseason and put him on the ice with Read!

To be Upshall 2.0, Wellwood has to stop being so effective on the ice. He gets too much done. And he needs to work on skating really fast at the D, threatening a hit, then glancing off to avoid contact and slamming his stick on the boards to fake contact. Then if he can start staying out all night partying, he might do it.

Agreed. Wellwood has an underrated skill set. They're basically the same player, but Wellwood can put up much better numbers.

Nailed it!

Wellwood will be on the team this year. Book it. You can't teach speed and if i'm correct (another guy did the leg work) Every line he played on, the other two players improved their corsi.
