Pretty crappy Article about Eberle... I hate when people invent stats to write a story.

Since when do columnists need facts to tell a story? Remember when our own Paul Friesen decided to pretend that it was the Coyotes that were brought back to Winnipeg instead of the Thrashers?

Monday Papers

Monday, July 30th Jets and General NHL news

Jets news:

Omaha World-Herald: Assistant Brian Renfrew has left UNO to join the Winnipeg Jets. Second time in under a week that UNO is making noise with the Jets, as this time the team has reportedly hired Renfrew to be part of the scouting team.
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...ch-300x165.jpg

NHL news:

USA Today: Pressing issues keep NHL offseason busy. Ten interesting questions that will need answering in the near future.

Toronto Sun: Bertuzzi trial put on hold until new year. The wheels of justice don’t always move very fast and eight years later, it appears that getting the trial started won’t be happening for awhile.

SI.com: Report suggests Coyotes buyer $20 million shy of necessary funds. Of course the NHL still feels that a deal will be completed, but a deal with whom? While we know that deadlines don’t mean much in the desert, how much longer can the NHL allow this process to drag on?

Edmonton Journal: Was Jordan Eberle’s success last season something of a mirage? Will his production fall from last season? Looking at the numbers you would believe so but numbers don’t tell the entire story so we will have to wait and see.

Part 2: Discussion: Why would Evander Kane sign a contract six years in length? Shea Weber offer sheet matched by Nashville Predators. The week in signings. Rapid Fire, Cheers & Jeers.

LOL people are really giving it to Ed Tait for suggesting the Jets go after Doan.

FWIW, I agree with him. You take away all the baggage and history and he's just the type of forward Chevy likes.

For 3 Million a season less then his asking price maybe. ;)

WJG 07-31-2012 01:44 PM

Some of those comments on Tait's article are hilarious. People are advocating signing Cheechoo and Commodore

Yeah, the numbers / term that were floated seem fairly ridiculous for a player clearly on the tail end of his career. But those were the numbers being floated by Doan's agent.

However, I agree with WJG - Doan is exactly the kind of player that the Jets would love to have.

Tuesday Papers

Tuesday, July 31st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Note: Winnipeg Jets' schedule changes (all times central) for next season.
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...ule-change.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Is there anybody out there? Still some free agent names out there. Anyone you’d like to see in Jets colours next season?

daveart.com: Fighter Jet mask. What do you think of Pavelec’s new mask? The designer gives you the story behind the design.
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...sk-300x168.jpg

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Is revenue sharing the NHL‘s only answer to avoiding lockout? Shoalts takes an in-depth look at the situation and one possible solution to help fix the current NHL model.

Overtime: Proposing a luxury tax for the next CBA. Our own Richard Pollock with his thoughts on what can be done to move this process along.

Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Penguins forward Craig Adams remains optimistic about CBA. Putting that Harvard education to good use, Adams is choosing to sit in on the discussions to keep himself informed as the process moves along.

NHL news:

Overtime: How the Phoenix Coyotes are winning an unfair game. Good friend to the Illegal Curve Hockey Show, Mike Colligan put together this extremely interesting piece on the inner workings of an NHL club. Must read.

Globe and Mail: Future of Shane Doan, Coyotes ownership set to come to a head. The Coyotes are like Rocky Balboa, every time you think they’ve been knocked out, they somehow keep getting back up. Of course if Jamison isn’t able to save the team in the near future, it would appear that Drago finally knocked out the champ for the last time.

Washington Examiner: Southeast now a division of labor. Conspicuously absent from mention…the Winnipeg Jets. Perhaps the Jets will be the Rodney Dangerfield of the Southeast, unable to get any respect.

Wednesday Papers

Wednesday, August 1st Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Free Press: Kane would be wise to take what’s on table. Appears Kane is still mulling over the reported 6 year deal the Jets have offered. Should he take the money and run or is he doing the right thing by taking his time to make this decision?
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...90-300x142.jpg

Winnipeg Free Press: Payroll bound to rise by summer’s end. Being a basement spending team does not mean you cannot make the playoffs. It does bear noting that a number of teams (Sens, Preds, Yotes, Panthers & Blues) that spent approximately similar amounts to the Jets all made the post season.

Winnipeg Sun: Time changes for Jets. Those who have both Bombers and Jets tickets are not going to be happy that the games overlap.

CBA news:

Wall Street Journal: NHL proposes expanded revenue sharing in CBA talks. Six weeks today before the current CBA expires and yet both sides are not hitting the panic button. Fans however are getting more and more resigned to missing part of the season, despite the sugar coating both sides of the negotiations are putting on the process.

New York Daily News: Gary Bettman shows signs of impatience with NHLPA information gathering. Let the games begin!

Overtime: Proposing a luxury tax for the next CBA. If you missed this yesterday, Richard Pollock of IC.com gave his thoughts on what can be done to move this process along.

NHL news:

NHL.com: How to replace Parise one of Devils’ six questions. From Stanley Cup runner-ups to having to do whatever they can to get back there minus one of their top players. Given the improvement around them in the East, this will be a tall task.

Ottawa Sun: Alfie poised to become one of NHL’s best bargains. That is quite the bargain basement pricing for the Sens.

The Province: Canucks may have an interest in big Bjugstad. Will have to wait until after Doan signs (whenever that will be) to see what Vancouver will do with trading Luongo.

Thursday Papers

Thursday, August 2nd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Note: Jets announce that Larry Simmons has been named Assistant General Manager. Spent last year as Assistant TO THE General Manager. Simmons was the Vice-President/Assistant General Manager with the Thrashers from 2004 until the team’s move to Winnipeg prior to last year.

USA Today: 2012 NHL offseason remakes (starts at picture 29 of 49). Jets are ranked 6th as Kevin Allen gives his end-of-July ranking of the 10 most improved teams and explains what the arrivals bring.

Windsor this week: A “little” motivation for Wellwood. Appears that Wellwood is enjoying his summer and is motivated to have a big season next year for the Jets.
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...od-300x200.jpg

CBA news:

Globe and Mail: Escrow a nasty word to players. But one that must be understood within the current CBA structure.

NHL.com: Subcommittee work dominates latest CBA session. Lots of little items also need to be resolved as both sides work towards getting a deal done.

New York Daily News: Lockout ‘foreseeable’ to Kings’ Westgarth. A pretty comprehensive assessment of where things stand currently.

NHL news:

Delaware County Times: Flyers’ Laviolette officially gets long-awaited contract. Nice to have the safety of a contract in your back pocket, but in today’s NHL, it doesn’t ensure total job security.

The Province: Shane Doan still on the menu for Canucks. And if they cannot get a deal done with the Coyotes captain, there is talk that they are also targeting Jason Arnott as a short term solution.

Friday Papers

Friday, August 3rd Jets, CBA and General NHL news

Jets news:

Winnipeg Sun: Baseball night in Winnipeg coming August 8th. Looks like Jets Assistant GM Craig Heisinger will be throwing out the first pitch and a number of other hockey related activities are planned for Shaw Park.

Winnipeg Free Press: Jets announce Simmons as assistant general manager. He has been with the franchise since the start in Atlanta.
http://illegalcurve.com/wp-content/u...ns-300x192.jpg

CBA news:

MLive.com: No progress in latest round of negotiations. Hopefully you don’t plan on spending your August long weekend waiting for a negotiation eureka moment, because it isn’t going to happen.

NHL news:

National Post: Canucks’ Ryan Kesler won’t be ready before December, agent says. The good news is Vancouver won’t be here until February so you will be able to see #17 lace em up. I guess that technically the above ‘good news’ could be viewed as ‘bad news’.

CBC: Tuukka Rask ready to be Bruins’ top goalie. All well and good but what are his views on Chik-Fil-A?

The Hockey News: Why the Northwest continues to be the NHL’s worst division. Perhaps sending the Jets there in 2013-14 wouldn’t be such a bad idea.

Sportsnet: ‘Trying like hell’ to move Islanders to Brooklyn. Could this be a move towards smaller, more intimate NHL arenas?
