I'm glad Kevin Connolly is doing it.

I always thought this would make a fantastic documentary, movie or book.

StrongIslanders90 08-01-2012 01:39 PM

guy basically bought the team with no money....

Damn can we get some good press? How about a documentary on the four straight cups!!!

If you have a spare chunk of time, this is a very worthwhile, astounding really, read:

http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/vau...87/1/index.htm

A sample:

"Then Spano caught a case of the decimal-point yips. In early May he wired Pickett $5,000 instead of the $5 million he had promised. On June 5 a $17 million check (for the $16.8 million payment plus interest) from Spano bounced. Finally, late in the afternoon of June 17, Spano called Pickett to pass along the wire-reference number for the $17 million payment due that day. When Pickett came in the next morning, he found that Spano had sent $1,700."

I've actually wrote a treatment and plN on doing a 30/30 documentary called Fish Sticks "who killed the New York Islanders?"

I love the small potatoes "who killed the usfl" documentary, if you guys have time watch Small Potatos and 30/30 The U (story of the Miami hurricanes) those 2 were classics!!

SLAPSHOT723 08-01-2012 09:07 PM

Kevin Connolly :yo:

This is going to be excellent ESPN's 30/30 series has been very well put together.

bigtim1988 08-02-2012 01:57 AM

that sports illustrated story was pretty good. I mean he has to be on of the best con men out. He tricked a NHL team AND a bank, how on earth does that happen??? It amazes me he was able to get 80 mil loan and he had no where near that close of that large amount of money. I didnt know the full extent on how he fooled the NHL, a prototypical BS artist. The sad thing is that he probably actually believes his lies

What spano did could be made into a 2 hour movie. and i would prefer a 2 hour movie rather than only 16 minutes which is what this 30 in 30 will eventually be after commericals. or it could be similar to that ny yankees movie about the summer of 77 which was done in a few parts mini series.

The 30 in 30 features are all scheduled for an hour plus, some have been two hours. In addition, most have limited commercial breaks.

I found this tweet pretty interesting by Kevin Connolly regarding the ESPN 30/30 Film....
@mrkevinconnolly: "@MikeyC1044: @mrkevinconnolly hey man you going to the Isles opener Sat night?" I think The Islanders are mad at me about my Espn movie...

SouthShore91 03-12-2013 01:28 PM

Looks like we have a name. Hornick tweeted out, looks like it's going to be called "Big Shot" and debut at Tribeca April 19th

jdr016 03-14-2013 09:29 PM

I had no idea Spano was only 33 years old! That makes it even worse on the NHL's part.

ktrio730 03-15-2013 12:57 PM

"Big Shot" - A film about John Spano directed by none other than Kevin Connelly...

I'm actually pretty excited to see this, simply because its directed from a guy that bleeds the Isles, not some espn hack that has no clue what icing is.

ESPN "30 For 30": "Big Shot"

Went to the Tribeca Film Festival premiere of the ESPN "30 For 30" documentary on John Spano last night. Really enjoyed it. I thought Kevin Connolly did a good job.

Interesting to see present-day Spano reflect back on the whole thing and still insist that he could/should have pulled it off. The film featured a lot of Spano and a lot of Milbury. The two clearly didn't get along.

Spano was there, though I didn't see him.

SLAPSHOT723 04-20-2013 11:48 AM

When is it being released?

Poliz24 04-20-2013 05:08 PM

Really, Really interested to see this. Any clue when it is coming out?

JTforPres2012 04-20-2013 06:35 PM

I know there was a thread already made about this film, if one of the Mods want to bump it? I couldn't seem to find it but remember reading about it in the past.

How did you get in to see the film? I tried it RSVP to the premiere and got denied.

crashthenet 04-21-2013 09:14 AM

Not our worst owner and still an Islander fan.

Just bought tickets early through an American Express promotion. My boss was actually one of the people interviewed by Connolly for the documentary, and he was featured fairly prominently in the final cut. In his dealings with ESPN they let him know when tickets would be available for purchase.

Brought my wife and sister, and wound up watching alongside Stan Fischler, who I used to work for after college. Judging from the reactions throughout and after the film, it seemed to be a hit with the crowd. A few people sitting around us knew nothing about the Spano story and said they really enjoyed it.

PJGooch 04-22-2013 08:37 AM

Not sure if this was commonly known back at the time, but apparently Spano was about a day away from finalizing a partnership with the owners of the Garden City Hotel that would have provided him the money needed to make his first payment and subsequently close the deal without any questions arising (for the time being, anyway).
