Nikos Dimitrakos

Whatever happened to Niko Dimitrakos? I remember he played with Wilkes-Scranton last year for a couple games.

Niko Dimitrakos Stürmer Adler Mannheim ------->Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg

I believe he got traded from Mannheim to Wolfsburg of the German league.

wej20 08-07-2012 10:21 AM

Looks like he'll be playing for the hilariously named Grizzly Adams Wolfsburg in the DEL (top German league) next year.

Yep. It was a tryout deal because WBS was pretty-well decimated by all the call-ups.

I think he's in The League of Shadows now.

He signed with the team at the start of the season, not in the wake of call ups. He decided to take another shot at the NHL with a camp tryout in Vancouver, didn't get a contract so he signed a 25-gamer with Wilkes-Barre. Then he took up a more lucrative opportunity back in Europe.

I think if they changed their name to the Jeremiah Johnsons, it would be more respectable. Or maybe just "Liver Eaters" for short. Then they could have a Zombie for a mascot (the logo could have a zombie fur trapper with a peace of liver in his hand/mouth) to tap into the teen fascination with the undead and various soul-stealing technologies. :thumbu:

Do we have a spare, oily Greek ******* or was he it?

Darth Vitale 08-07-2012 08:10 PM

It's too bad he didn't stick around. We could've named him Oikos.

Unfortunately, we had to ship him back to Germania as well.

Dimitrakos only had a 25 game professional tryout with WBS. He underperformed so it wasn't extended, and he went back to Germany instead. Mannheim didn't re-sign him so he was a free agent this summer. Now he signed with Wolfsburg in the same league.

The name comes from an old fan club called "Grizzly Adams". When the previous Wolfsburg team went bankrupt in the early 90s, these supporters kept operating the youth teams along with their own amateur team, and eventually the current club (EHC Wolfsburg) grew out of this and they kept the old nickname. For a club often derided for having no fans and tradition, it's a pretty cool story actually.

I know that I say this a lot, but some of the people who post on bombulie's blog felt that Dimitrakos should have been kept. Interesting how some people see things differently.
