How is Hanowski getting ranked ahead of Macaroni? Doesn't Macaroni have the better skillset and upside? They're both so far away from making the team I don't see how you don't go with maximum future potential.

Macaroni is faster. Hanowski has a better shot and better hockey sense. 'Roni also has more red flags at this point than Hanowski to me.

Hanowski has a better skillset then you are giving him credit.

But Macaroni has a better name than you are giving him credit.

The concerns with Macaroni are hockey sense, durability and how he can adapt when his speed isn't such a huge weapon. Hanowski has his concerns to but he's further along in his development and his biggest concern is skating which he's been working on and is much easier to correct than hockey sense.

Why no Zatkoff love?

Because he's 25, never played an NHL game and has been only slightly above average in the AHL so far. He's a great depth netminder and should probably figure somewhere towards the end of the top 20 but his long-term potential with the Pens doesn't look to be more than an injury call-up benchwarmer.

And Shero acquired 3 goalies this summer at the draft so I doubt we are the only ones who don't feel the love for him

Because he's an AHL player who signed a free-agent deal during a summer when everyone around here was preoccupied with the Jordan Staal trade, our draft, the drawn-out pursuit of the two marquee UFAs and then a second-tier UFA and now whatever we consider Doan and everything else to be.

Zatkoff wasn't involved in any of those, so he has barely registered a blip on the consciousness of most Pens fans.

And there's the fact that people naturally are a little suspicious of a minor-league player whose original NHL team lets just walk away as a free agent.

While Zatkoff is a virtual unknown — beyond the stats some people have bothered to look up — the guys who are getting votes ahead of him have either been: A. In the Pens system for a while (we're familiar with them), B. Part of a trade (We read a lot about them) or C. Were drafted (Again, we read a ton about them).

It's really not a mystery.

This time in 2014 - Marcantuoni will be sky rocketing up into the top 5... but I went to BH instead. I really do feel Marcantuoni has the chance to be a steal. He has a great attitude and a great skill set. He just needs to beef up.

Potential is definitely there, if it wasn't for his injury last year he would have been a late 1st or early 2nd round pick

Your 3 reasons above are a joke. They basically describe every prospect in our system besides Zatkoff.

Maybe he's just not as good as some of the other prospects still on the board in this vote? ****...he's probably not even the next best goalie on the board for the Pens.

Slabber Chops 08-10-2012 02:52 PM

Hanowski. 'bout time. Got my next 3 lined up and ready.

dogthateats 08-10-2012 03:09 PM

He was one of the first UFA Players that we acquired and was in an organization with arguably one of the beat goalie depth charts in the NHL. Every scouting report that I read said that he was NHL ready and a better player than Thiessen. (who was in our top ten prospect rankings last year). So to me it is a little bit of a mystery. I have not seen him play at all is why I have asked but I guess He sucks bc he is 25 years old and doesn't have a cool first name.

rmartin65 08-10-2012 03:42 PM

As far as goalies go, I like Murray better than Zatkoff. Zatkoff is 25, was a UFA, and has never seen NHL action. He was ranked as the Kings' 17th prospect in the spring rankings, projecting to be a career backup. Murray has legit starting potential.

jmelm 08-10-2012 04:04 PM

Kenny Agostino.....as in the guy who has quickly become our most underrated prospect.

What does his first name matter? The last name goes on the jersey and Zatkoff is a pretty badass last name. I'd love nothing more than to see him break in with the Pens, win the Vezina, buy a Zatkoff jersey, and trade Fleury for a winger for Crosby too. I hope those scouting reports promises me all of those things.

Whakahere 08-10-2012 04:31 PM

to me it is all down to luck for most of the remaining players. I don't see any really making into the top 6 on a regular basis. We are going to trade some of our top talent, more drafts will come and go. I only see top 6 potential if they manage to come to the AHL and be big point producers. I went for Ben Hanowski as I hear he is working on his skating. If that improve he has the skill set to be a good third liner.
