J.S. Giguere Extension

Looking at the capgeek website it appears that Giguere has signed an extension through the 2013-2014 season. So even if there is a lock-out we still get his capabilities for another year.

Edit: Looks like he has a no movement clause as well which makes sense of course.

Edit 2: Term is $1.5 Million/1 year

Just found this out right before work so that's why I couldn't edit it till now. Only reason I'm back is because my exhaust pipe fell off of my muffler. :banghead:

Ceremony 08-13-2012 07:09 AM

Excellent. Very glad he wants to stay.

Ivan13 08-13-2012 07:11 AM

1 year, 1.5mil, great news.

Hennessy 08-13-2012 07:35 AM

That is very, very good.

Freudian 08-13-2012 08:08 AM

While it's a possibility he might become a worse player in the next two years, Varlamov should be able to take on more on-ice responsibility and Giguere was great off the ice as a leader for the team and mentor to Varlamov.

bohlmeister 08-13-2012 08:31 AM

Looks like we found our goalie coach.

Lonewolfe2015 08-13-2012 08:38 AM

I wonder if we had a behind doors agreement with him before he signed that if he played well we'd be interested in extending him.

Razor29 08-13-2012 09:18 AM

Damn OP, you are on the ball aren't ya?

Not sure why there would be such an agreement in place but it's what ended up happening so this is a no-brainer. It's nice to see that Giggy could have probably signed on for MORE money at the end of this current season but chose to stay in Colorado for peanuts for a player of his calibre.

People tend to forget that he's still only 35 yrs old and still not 38-39 at this point...he's got some good hockey left in him for sure.

RTN 08-13-2012 09:27 AM

I'm surprised by this. Not to say it's a bad signing, just didn't expect this. I take it as a sign that he really likes being here.

S E P H 08-13-2012 09:33 AM

Solid signing. Now can we change op?

E: Also says that none of our goalers will be ready before 13-14 season, which makes sense.

Bonzai12 08-13-2012 10:16 AM

Nice deal. This gives the younger guys one more year to develop, but any more than 1 year past 35 years of age and I would worry with the CBA rule.

Sherminator strikes again.

iAvs 08-13-2012 10:50 AM

That's great. He's a good mentor for Varly, but also is keen on the backup role as well. Perfect fit.

Precisely. This is great news.

CalderKing21 08-13-2012 11:15 AM

be nice if he retired at the end of the deal and became our full time goalie coach. him being around did wonders for Varly down the stretch.

The Shermanator 08-13-2012 11:15 AM

How'd I do this time?

Colorado Avalanche 08-13-2012 11:24 AM

great signing, although I thought he deserved a raise.

amazing for how cheap these veteran goalies sign for giguere 1,5 million and vokoun same last year.

R S 08-13-2012 12:14 PM

Very good signing. Good length, good price.

Also shows that the guys upstairs aren't up for rushing one of our prospects to the NHL unnecessarily.

Great finding!

These boards are my main news source about the AVS.

Seriously, nothing on the DP and the AVS website site about this.:shakehead:

I'll give you the Avs website not having anything, but they generally don't post the signings the minute they happen.

But the DeverPost.com has something up already, and they've had it up for the last 20 minutes.

The Avs official site finally posted the signing.

J.S. provided leadership, stability and a veteran presence to our team last season. He helped solidify our goaltending position and we are pleased to have J.S. under contract for the next two seasons.

RobinDIF 08-13-2012 12:51 PM

I expected us to look at his form for a few months next season to see if he is going downhill before making this decision. Quite surprised we are making this decision so early.

Adama0905 08-13-2012 01:00 PM

Great decision, guy was a backbone last season. Great to hear it.

Freudian 08-13-2012 01:03 PM

I wonder if this was done with an eye towards Giguere having a post-player career with Avalanche.

Cypher 08-13-2012 02:38 PM

Good signing... Now just give O'Byrne a 2 year extension and lock up ROR
