MartyOwns 08-14-2012 03:06 PM

with a bunch of signing bonuses, no doubt

JRZ DVLS 08-14-2012 03:11 PM

Guess i don't understand signing them if they are going to play in Juniors.

CerebralGenesis 08-14-2012 03:13 PM

yayyy

Saugus 08-14-2012 03:15 PM

Well, that's nice. He's still probably going to the Q.

Oroku Saki* 08-14-2012 03:17 PM

New CBA influenced.

I doubt it. Lou told Larson no games played bonuses and those types of bonuses - that the team didn't believe in that for ELCs. I doubt he would turn around and give them to Matteau.

edit: Just got it - my sarcasm meter...haven't been on the boards in awhile due to work so a little slow.

Bleedred 08-14-2012 03:26 PM

So he'll be playing in Juniors? Or AHL?

NJD1982 08-14-2012 03:28 PM

I'm confused

I don't think he is eligible to play in the AHL because of the NHL's agreement with the CHL. He can't go to the AHL until he's 20.

Drewr15 08-14-2012 03:32 PM

I think basically Lou is giving the kid extra incentive to try and impress in camp and make it to the pros. I would be totally shocked if he does not go to juniors this year but to me Lou is saying - your contract is ready and waiting when you earn your way onto here. Pure speculation but otherwise why give it to him now.

The 2012 players are already signing deals which is a little unusual, but that's in reaction to possible rule changes in the new CBA. Players who don't sign now might be forced to sign 4+ year ELCs if that's negotiated in.

In terms of the team's motivation, it's just one less thing on the to do list. I imagine Matteau's deal is pretty straight forward given that even Larsson didn't get bonuses. Josefson (20th overall) got 900K and Tedenby (24th) got 875K for their ELCs.

Matteau could technically play in the AHL if they wanted. It's the goofy loophole that Matteau wasn't drafted out of the CHL even though that's where he'll be playing next year. John Carlson played in the AHL at 19 since he was drafted out of the USHL.

Devils Trap 08-14-2012 03:53 PM

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
Lou Lamoriello said team was happy with how Matteau played at prospects camp and Team USA camp in Lake Placid. Wanted to get him signed.

Tom Gulitti ‏@TGfireandice
Lamoriello wouldn't discuss whether there's a chance Matteau could make NHL team in training camp.

Cowbell232 08-14-2012 04:06 PM

It's always a good idea to lock up players that you want in the future - even if he doesn't turn pro this year. Which I personally don't see happening unless he's unbelievably impressive.

-----

Also, FYI, the agreement between the AHL/CHL has expired IIRC - or will very shortly. So the "Not Drafted From CHL" is irrelevant unless they get a new agreement in place.

rrekaj13 08-14-2012 04:09 PM

I see Q --> AHL at least, if not two year's in the Q.

You can go to the AHL whenever you DONT have CHL rights

Matteu has QJMHL rights, so he'll be there

Wouldn't that involve an overage year? I don't see him bothering with that...I think 1 year in the Q, 1 year in the A, with a potential NHL game or 8 mixed in there somewhere.

He played U18 this year, so I figured he had at least 2 more years of junior possible before he'd get bumped up. Either way, he's likely at least 2-3 seasons away from a legit NHL spot.

Overage year would be if he played in 2014-15 after he already turned 20. Could see Matteau do two years in the Q since his father will be coaching there. It'll depend on his development this year.

Oh, definitely at least 2 years out. But if he can play a handful of games over the next two years to learn where he's gotta get to, it's not a bad thing. He's looking really pretty with his future right now. I'm pretty high on this kid myself.

I dont even want to talk about that, he said.
