Is bozak the best NCAA free agent signing recently

Obviously Martin st Luis and rafalski are among the best all time, but, bozak made a pretty huge impact compared to others signed around the same time, also scouting is a lot better now then before.

Also is he one of the best alltime undrafted NCAA prospects ?

SakuSauce 08-15-2012 12:25 AM

Matt Read is not bad either.

Leafs For Life* 08-15-2012 12:25 AM

Well, Schultz has more hype, but I don't know if you consider him in this.

He was drafted, and many believe he used the loop hole in the CBA so I personally don't consider him part of this discussion.

Grant 08-15-2012 12:29 AM

Only ones to really discuss right now are Bozak and Read.

McTank 08-15-2012 12:30 AM

Read probably, not sure why it matters, havent seen a great NCAA signed player in a while

Ziggy Stardust 08-15-2012 12:35 AM

Teddy Purcell was a UFA out of college. He's turned into a pretty good player for Tampa Bay.

Mattb124 08-15-2012 12:37 AM

Dan Boyle anyone?

Dark Knight 08-15-2012 12:40 AM

No.

I'd put Teddy Purcell and Matt Read higher on the list.

But even though Tyler Bozak gets a lot of heat from Leafs fans, they mostly fail to realize that he's one of our better defensive forwards and he has decent offensive skill as well. He's not a 1st line C where he sees most of his ice time playing with Kessel but he can be a solid third line C if given a chance.

But I won't really miss him much if he's traded. I noticed last year that our record without him was very admirable than with him.

Pretty far from recent.

Really? Wasnt aware he was a NCAA signing. He wins by a long shot then. Think he's reffering to more recently though

nazembiggs* 08-15-2012 12:55 AM

Recently has to be teddy purcell, his production and better defensive play makes him far more vauleable then Bozak.

Chris Tanev might be worth discussing as well soon enough

JT Brown is another. He looked very promising with the national team at the WCs.

Tyler Biggs* 08-15-2012 01:13 AM

Would rather have Bozak if I had to choose between him and Read at this point.

Brewsky 08-15-2012 01:15 AM

Yep.

McTank 08-15-2012 01:15 AM

Purcell
Read
Bozak
Would be my recent top 3 I suppose

ReLyT 08-15-2012 01:39 AM

Torey Krug and JT Brown were good pickups at the end of the season? Whats everyone expecting out of them? First callups from the AHL?

Eskimo44 08-15-2012 02:10 AM

Taylor Fedun was looking like a player prior to breaking his femur. Over the next few seasons he might enter the discussion.

I think that Adam Oates would be considered the best ever in this category.

JT didn't look out of place on Lecavaliers wing in the five games he had.
I think he had one point? If he has a good camp he can make the top 6, will be competing with Connolly 15p/68GP, and Conacher AHL MVP, Rookie of year for the RW.

JT Brown should make the team out of camp.

Bryanbryoil 08-15-2012 03:27 AM

Penner had a poor year, but he was also undrafted.

Winroba 08-15-2012 04:24 AM

Purcell
Read
Bozak
Tanev

Can't go wrong with any, obviously Tanev is below the others, but he'll make up a lot of ground this year

Even if Boyle was considered, you'd then have to consider Martin St.Louis and he trumps Dan Boyle by an insanely ridiculous margin.

But yeah, these kids...aren't too bright for the education they were getting. They want the quickest path to the NHL so they go to the team that is the most desperate to fast track that career path for them and then they end up being career AHL'ers or just go from team to team and stunt their own growth. Recently, guys like Butler and soon to be DaCosta are going to head down that path, Bozak is getting closer to that every year.

There are a few that pick the right teams, as a Pens fan, I can fully admit Read picked the smart path, he picked the team that wouldn't throw him in the top 6 or put lofty expectations on him because he'd be going to a playoff team and a contender, they would take their time with him and they did...notice the reason Read did well and even Purcell?

They played in the AHL, then the next year they went through training camp and then fought for a spot. Butler, Bozak, etc...joined their teams right away, big mistake. In Butler's case, bad system...poor decision.

Purcell's path was the longest out of the guys mentioned like Read and Bozak. He's also become one of the more legit top 6 players between the two.
