CHL Players Forming a Union? (Mod: Canadian Hockey League, aka junior)

Sandra Slater, a consultant for the Canadian Hockey League Players Association (CHLPA), expects the group to go public within 10 days. The CHLPA aims to create better representation for junior hockey players regarding rights, education packages and compensation for their use in league branding as well as CHL and Hockey Canada events, particularly, the World Junior Hockey Championship.

“The CHL is big business. They make millions of dollars a year and these kids make it for them,” said Slater. “Hockey Canada is a big part of this as well.”

If a 60 per cent majority of players accept the union, Slater says the CHL will have no choice but to recognize it by law.

“We're hoping to have a good working relationship,” she said.

mirtle: Really interesting that Canadian junior players could be unionized soon. Changes to the education package system definitely needed.

Interesting. Can you form a union in this case? I guess so if the lawyers are looking at it, but I thought technically the players were not employees. And union dues are pretty much impossible, so where does that funding come from?

I think by and large many players are not really treated badly, but its been obvious in the O that "standards" between teams have been mixed. You have some top end franchises that can get any player, and some franchises players try to avoid, and not just for travel reasons.

MasterDecoy 08-20-2012 07:59 AM

im happy with that. kinda surprised they didn't already have one to be honest

LadyStanley 08-20-2012 10:04 AM

Guessing they'll be wanting funding from WJC and other events, as well as some from the QMJHL, OHL and WHL teams' portion of revenue.

danishh 08-20-2012 10:27 AM

Does the chl currently get anything from the iihf for the wjc? I can't imagine the iihf giving the players anything.

This is an interesting development, but to me the only obvious variables in play are player stipends, playing conditions, and education packages.

Maybe they should form a union for the NCAA players in BB, football and hockey!
They generate billions of dollars while the players only get a small scratch of that!

The NCAA players are credited with scholarships.. If they wanted to form a union, the NCAA would probably strip their scholarships and take their eligibility away

I'd love to see some kind of revamping in the NCAA. Imagine if those athletes all banded together to form some kind of student union and the NCAA shut them all out, shooting themselves in the foot financially to the tune of hundreds and hundreds of millions of dollars.

No Fun Shogun 08-20-2012 11:34 AM

Actually mildly surprised that they haven't unionized before now.

The scholarships basically cost the universities nothing except a chair in a classroom. The courses and professors are already there for the "paying students".
While the sports does cost the schools money it's just a pittance to the hundreds of million (billions? with swag and other generating devices) what is generated by the players.

More than half the league is comprised of legal minors, and you have kids spread across the country and internationally. It wouldn't be easy to get enough signatures to form a union/association.

Having said that, this appears to be someone's idea of "if they build it, they will come". Any players who have been contacted by the media to this point have not been contacted by the CHLPA, nor do they have any knowledge of it. Ditto for the agents (who would logically be involved in the initial phases).

While it's possible some players have been contacted, but I find it hard to believe that a bunch of teenagers can hold a secret like this for any amount of time, let alone the 14 months the so-called PA has been in development.

Interesting. According to the CHLPA Twitter account, Georges Laraque is the newly appointed Executive Director.

CHLPA Twitter account

danishh 08-21-2012 01:52 PM

That account appears inaccessible right now. I wouldn't put to much stock in that statement.

Kloparren 08-21-2012 02:02 PM

Does this mean higher ticket prices? What about teams that can't attract fans even with $15-20 tickets?

Georges Laraque has been named to head the fledgling Canadian Hockey League Players Association.

Laraque? His fax machine will be ready...

The proposed union's "under construction" website is http://chlpa.com/

Nope, it's George Laraque.

So either they've mispelled his name (which is hilarious) or they've found someone similarly named and are using that name to try to gain credibility.

beenhereandthere 08-21-2012 03:02 PM

1/3 of their membership would be under 18, wouldn't that cause a problem?

It adds a wrinkle, but those players also sign legal contracts with their CHL teams (or their parents do, on their behalf).

ottawah 08-21-2012 03:28 PM

Heard on teamm1200 coming home. A member of the Brampton Battalion was asked to serve as the initial president of the Ontario chapter. His answer was something akin to what the players have to say to Bettman .......

I just cannot see this getting strong backing from the majority of OHL players.

chasespace 08-21-2012 07:52 PM

What would they do about collecting dues? Would the players pay, the parents, the individual teams, or the leagues themselves?

it would probably have to be the players.. The teams or leagues make 0 sense to pay into a players association
