Market set for Seguin? I'd give him this deal.

CDJ 08-22-2012 12:50 PM

Wow, that is a long term for a player that has yet to play a full season. Granted, he is a superb talent, but I would have waited until he played in a full season before I committed to him for that long with that term.

unifiedtheory 08-22-2012 12:52 PM

Over paid him and screwed us.

patty59 08-22-2012 12:54 PM

6 is the new 4

Scotto74 08-22-2012 12:56 PM

I don't like the way they give out 2nd contracts in the NHL but it is what it is.

I would give seguin the same deal

duckchobbins 08-22-2012 12:56 PM

I guess that's the risk you take with this new wave of young stars? Sign them to long deals and hope they live up to it, or risk losing them the moment they hit free agency. I would not give Seguin this deal, but now he is likely to get something close to it I assume.

Sign Seguin to the Jeff Carter/Mike Richards contract

when I said I would give Seguin the same deal it's not because I would have selected that number but since Hall got it that means Seguin will get about the same so I would do it.

Does that make sense?

It does make sense when you look at it that way. What I don't get is that Hall and Skinner are getting this kind of cash thrown at them and they haven't finished their ELC's OR played 150 games. What's the rush here exactly? Maybe the Weber offer sheet put some fear into these teams?

Another thing to remember in these signings is that neither Carolina or Edmonton are huge attractions for players. Maybe that works in the Bruins' favor.

I have hated the sencond contract's since the new CBA went into place. I really think they need to do something about that in this round. These guys are getting paid on what they might be able to do not on what they are doing/have done.

getting paid before you prove yourself is crazy.

yep...but 70.3 is also the new 55

finchster 08-22-2012 01:25 PM

If Seguin plays a full season this year (whatever a full season is this year), and scores a PPG or close he will get between 6-7m (not surprised to get 7m). I remember I said that last year and was summarily laughed at so forgive me if I laugh at everyone here for a little bit

However, the other variable is the new CBA who knows how that will effect contracts going forward.

Dogberry 08-22-2012 01:31 PM

That's a lot of coin for guy who's never played more than 65 games in a season.

ap3lovr 08-22-2012 01:40 PM

hopefully this will end the countless unrealistic posts saying that he should get 4-5.

WBC8 08-22-2012 01:42 PM

Another ridiculous contract..... Way to go NHL. No wonder you are at the point of no return right now..

BergyWho37 08-22-2012 01:43 PM

Yikes .. Whats Eberle going to be then ?

Better lock up Segs before he breaks out this year :amazed:

BudMovin* 08-22-2012 01:51 PM

Crap.

I think I see what you mean. Are you saying you think Hall's deal is a bit rich, but essentially sets the market for that type of player? ie: Seguin

If so, yeah I agree. Ultimately I guess it's not up to us fans to decide what is a fair deal, the market works itself out in many cases.

Will all depend on the term. Oilers are buying some UFA years with the 7 years are they not?

bingo

I would have liked to see Seguin come in at less then that until he proves himself but based on the Hall deal the market is set in my opinion which sucks in my opinion.

I guess we just hope that Seguin is a rare breed of athlete, and doesn't chase the fattest contract  Perhaps he is happy in Boston, already almost at hero status, playing on a solid team with youth AND experience. Either that, or maybe Chiarelli shortens the deal, doesn't buy as many ufa years and the cap hit comes in somewhere in the 5's?

Perhaps that's a pipe dream

bostone737 08-22-2012 02:14 PM

seems a little high or risky rather, for a guy who has missed almost 40 games his first 2 seasons

If the NHL gets a new "$55m" cap, then one would expect that they are also getting a salary roll back of the same %age; hence Hall's contract would be in the high $4m range.

cat400 08-22-2012 02:23 PM

The sad thing is that I had hoped that the new CBA was going to put the brakes on the escalating 2nd contracts.

Looks more and more like it is going to be a long lockout as the team owners fight among themselves.

Mike Yeos Eyebrows 08-22-2012 02:29 PM

Once again the Edmonton Oilers butcher the NHL's economy.
