I expect fairly similar numbers to last season. Both Ladd and Kane are our top LW'ers, and they'll get relatively close to the same ES and PP minutes I'd say.

I expect 25-30 goals, around 25 assists, 45-50, maybe 55 points.

Grind 08-27-2012 09:24 AM

I think we'll see Ladd take a slight dip in production.

Though we haven't replaced his position by any stretch, I could see some of his pp time being eaten up by kane and even oli.

With the team being all around deeper, i think his es minutes will get knocked back a bit as well, that being said, if he's on a line with joki he may get a boost from his shoot first mentality (Ladd love his garbage and i really think Joki is a perfect linemate to ladd's style of play)

I'd project

27 g
25 assists,
though those numbers could be switched depending on line mates (with oli i could see him getting more assists then usual).

Would be surprised if he got lower then 50 pts, and less suprised if her went over 55.

conservatively 50-55 pts IMO.

2011-2012 265shots 10.6sh%

Similar to Grind but from a different angle, I can see his goals dipping this year. Last season was the only 200+ shots Ladd has ever taken. The year before was his only 12.0+sh%. For Ladd to repeat, he will most likely have to shoot equally to last year or have luck like 2 seasons ago. Both are possible, but I can see Kane eating away oppertunities for the shots.

Not trolling, just don't think there will be NHL hockey this season. I hope I'm wrong.

Sorry, should change the benchmark to "selfish 3rd period penalty minutes, likely in the neutral or offensive zone, when the game is either in-reach or on the line".

Using that metric, Ladd is leading Wheeler by about a 10 to 1 margin.

Actually, (can't find it currently... will post when I can) someone disproved this.

Wheeler beats Ladd in:
"Lazy" penalties (tripping, holding, hooking)
3rd period penalties
Offensive zone penalties
Game is within 1 point penalties

EDIT: Thanks truck... getting old age in my bad memory

was just going to post this but couldn't find the original story as well...was it AIH or illegal curve that did that research?

It was eye opening to say the least.

EDIT: and there we have it. Thanks Truck.

That is the kind of analysis that amuses me. Sometimes there is a major difference between perception and reality.

I love when somebody can dispel or at least challenge a commonly accepted narrative by breaking it down. I especially like it when it challenges my personal narrative. I am all like like "Take that brain!"

This article doesn't dispel any myths about Ladd taking bad penalties in the 3rd period when the game on the line, it actually reinforces that fact. The only counter-argument is "Wheeler does it too!". A little context....and this is where the statheads get it wrong, IMO. Unless you're prepared to show videos of Wheeler's vs Ladds penalties (and believe me, you don't want to) so viewers can decide which penalties are good vs bad, this is meaningless.

I watched every game last year as I'm sure most of us did. Aside from fighting PK Subban, I never really saw Wheeler taking a selfish penalty (I wouldn't even call that selfish...it was great). Most of his "lazy" penalties were backchecking and tripping / hooking guys.

On the other hand, we all watched Ladd slash / highstick / crosscheck and elbow opposing players in the offensive or neutral zone, late in close games. (Games against Calgary, Carolina and New Jersey come to mind.) There is good reason why everyone believes Ladd can't control his temper and takes some brutal penalties occassionally...because its true.

Damascus 08-27-2012 04:55 PM

I think (and now this is just opinion) the manner in which the penalties were taken made a difference. Blake Wheeler if I recall, took a lot of his penalties out of sheer domination and desperation in the offensive zone, where as Ladd would just do it because it was the lazy thing to do. That is just my opinion though. *shrug*
