HFDucks Yahoo Dynasty League

This will be the main discussion thread of our little Dynasty league which will hopefully last a long time. Maybe a mod can sticky it? So here we'll mostly just discuss league rule changes, weekly competition between posters, trades (though do not make public offers on here, you can, but it's more strategic not to).

So I'll try to break down the league as simply as I can.
  • 12 Teams
  • 3 Divisions
  • Continuous annual play
  • 1 opening fantasy draft
  • subsequent drafts will consist of players not saved as keepers and players new to the Y! Fantasy list
  • Every year you are able to save any player you want
  • Each player released = one open draft pick
  • So if I were to save every player my first-17th round draft picks would be worthless.
  • If I was to keep all but 3 players I would have a first second and third pick
  • 30 player roster to allow for prospect "development"
  • Head to Head competition, stats are matched head to head if you have more stats in one category you have more points.
  • Each matchup lasts a week
  • Trades are allowed but will be vetoed if deemed too one-sided.
  • Draft picks must be traded but the same amount of draft picks must come back. (you can do 1+2+3 for a player +25+26+27)
  • Participation is required but not very difficult. Adjust your rosters every day (If you want to do it on the go I suggest the app fantasy monster pro, shake your phone and it automatically fills your roster with players playing), and respond to emails. At most this can take you up to 10 minutes.
  • Adding players through free agency, waivers, and trade isn't required by any means, but ignoring other managers and neglecting your roster kind of makes for a crappy experience for other managers, so...anyone inactive without a good reason will lose their team.
  • Also, not a rule, but I do hope everyone's Yahoo email is the one they regularly use so league notifications and inter-team negotiating actually happens with everyone.

Other than that have fun with it. If you have any problems with the way things are going, well we're here to discuss it and decide on changes.

Hopefully we don't have to wait too long to actually start playing this.

Never played any fantasy sports before. Dont know anything about it. Im sure I will have no clue what to do. Having said that, I intend to kick all your *****.

I voted offline draft, since the draft could happen in verry difficult time for me.

I`ve done a couple of live drafts on ESPN and they`re pretty fun and exciting i must say.

Well...should we decide to do a Live draft the next order of business would be to decide a good time for everyone.

Not to sound selfish, but running an offline draft would be very hard for me.

1.) I have to be the one to ensure everyone is drafting.
2.) I have to cancel or approve prospect drafting after checking Yahoo's list. Say someone wants to draft Vatanen or Lindholm to have in their pool, I'd have to undo it, contact the manager, wait for him to re-draft and then green light the next pick. Not everyone is online at the same time.
3.) Once the draft is completed I have to assign all 360 players to their respective teams

I mean if we vote on that, that's what I'd do. I'm not trying to be Mr. Power Hungry Commish or anything. Just giving my side of things.

i vote live.

if you cant be online you get the bpa according to yahoos list (if you dont edit your own) and can trade from there. while it wont be optimal, it gets you a moderate team that can be augmented with trades.

Kalvinators 08-30-2012 04:15 PM

DuckJet:

yeah, well, i understand, that is a lot of work to do and could get messy above the line.

It`s right after midnight here now but i`m sure we can figure something out with the timezones if (and probably) Live draft is the winner. It`s afternoon for you in OC so it`s not completely day against night. As you mentioned - live draft time is the next issue that must be solved.

I imagined the offline draft more agile and quick, but i completely understand the problems that may occur, now when you told them.

This is true as well. Lists can be made. Being that it's a 30 man roster, you can rank all your players without consideration toward positional needs because Yahoo will address those problems automatically. I already made my list though I fully plan to attend. I prefer my list to Yahoo's due to the strategy involved.

Good point. I was co-commishing a league awhile back which happened to flop because we did an offline draft. The person who was running it bailed because the amount of work involved as well.

Live drafts get people pumped, not to mention we can smack talk eachother in between picks ;)

I vote live. Hopefully we can find a time that suits everyone.

Live. It's quick and easy and you can use your own judgement as opposed to the luck of the draw of a computer.

I'm the "Thor Losers" by the way. If the absence of my name on the first post wasn't a typo.

My bad. Thought I put you there.

EDIT: I know I put this in OP, but it's a pretty big post, is everyone's primary email with Yahoo?

Paul4587 08-30-2012 05:35 PM

Mines gmail but I can easily check Yahoo consistently.

A question regarding the stat categories, is it just one point for every category or is it weighted?

On the site it lists the categories as:

Forwards/Defensemen Stat Categories: Goals (G), Assists (A), Points (P), Plus/Minus (+/-), Penalty Minutes (PIM), Powerplay Goals (PPG), Powerplay Points (PPP), Shorthanded Goals (SHG), Shorthanded Points (SHP), Game-Winning Goals (GWG), Shots on Goal (SOG), Hits (HIT), Blocks (BLK)

Goaltenders Stat Categories: Wins (W), Goals Against Average (GAA), Saves (SV), Save Percentage (SV%), Shutouts (SHO)

So is a hit worth the same as a goal or how does the scoring work? Sorry if it's a stupid question, I've never really played any fantasy hockey before.

DuckJet 08-30-2012 06:10 PM

It's not a stupid question. If there's an option for weighted stat categories I haven't found it yet and I'm not too sure that would be something I'd be interested in changing. Say if I were to diminish the value of PIM or Hits, it makes the addition of more physical minded players rather useless.

Paul4587 08-30-2012 06:14 PM

So everything is weighted evenly then?

Yeah. You have more goals? 1 point. More assists 1 point. Fewer SOG no point. And so on.

2faded 08-30-2012 06:59 PM

Weekend is probably best unless we do it 7pm PST or after on the weekday. I cannot do anything before 7 on the weekdays because of work. And while i may be able to browse the internet at work right now, if it's my turn to pick for example and my boss says its time to review something my pick is going to be skipped.

Sean Garrity 08-30-2012 07:23 PM

I'm confused on how say the 2nd years draft would work. Say I keep 29 out of the 30 players, so does that mean I basically get a 29th round draft pick irregardless of what round I took the player in the original draft?

Also, I haven't been in any leagues that allowed you to save ALL players. Doesnt it basically put too much emphasis on the first years draft? For example, if someone gets screwed by autodraft, their team could be garbage for years because everyone will just hang on to their good players.

Sorry if my post is confusing, I'm on my phone. :/

No. Sorry I didn't make that more clear. You keep all but one guy and you get the first round pick and none of the others preceding it.

And that's sort of the point of a hockey pool or dynasty league. We'll strive to get a date and time that works for everybody. In my other league a few people were forced to autopick, I remember one finished 4th/16 and the other 10th. At the beginning of the year they accepted the challenge of re-building their team. That's kind of the whole point. Regardless, this is part of the reason I stuck with 12 teams. That way, even with autopick, for the most part, the top 6 picks will be stars.

Tier1 Stamkos, Malkin, Giroux, Crosby, Ovechkin, Lundqvist, Perry, D.Sedin, Tavares, Quick, Rinne, Parise
Tier 2 Kovy, Kessel, Neal, Nash, Hartnell, Howard, Spezza, H.Sedin, Rask, Sharp, E.Staal, Seguin
Tier 3 Karlsson, Kopitar, Hall, Schneider, Lucic, Ryan, Eberle, Iginla, Bryzgalov, Halak, Kane, Backes
Tier 4 Zetterburg, Toew, Landeskog, Smith, Backstrom, Ward, Price, Letang, Marleau, Richards, St. Louis

and plenty more value down the line.

I'm simming a 12 round draft on autopick in the 10th spot right now. I'll post the results.

Mock draft went like this: Perry, Parise, Hall, Schneider, Mike Smith, Marleau, RNH, Simmonds, Yandle, Enstrom, Myers, Burns, Williams, Krejci, O'Reilly, Huberdeau

So I don't think people will be that screwed if they're forced to autopick.

Well that's going to depend on whether we have guys from the East Coast or Europe. Maybe someone's got a date planned. Idk. The whole thing should take take a few hours and people need to commit to that time frame. Assuming everyone is in PST we could do it late night...assuming everyone is man enough to stay up late :P

gratefulyours 08-30-2012 10:34 PM

even if they can't make it and are forced to auto pick, if they edit their list, the auto pick will pick off that list before switching to yahoo's. so even if they can not be online they can get more of the players they want compared to yahoo randomness.

as for the email thing, that email is what i have used for everything that requires an email (but dont want to use your "main email") for many many many years. it gets a ton of spam that goes by the filters daily.

i sent you a message in the league section about it.

i am on these boards daily though, to look if not post, so if someone needs to get a hold of me then can leave a message here. if that is ok.

We'll have to see. I'll just try to remember that if you aren't responding to trade proposals it's not because of inactivity. Maybe make it a thread on the league board so we can have it there for reference.

As for the list, it's a great point. I mean using autopick even without my custom list (I used Y!'s default list) I came away with a pretty solid 16 player pool in my mock

DuckJet 08-31-2012 03:42 PM

Ok that one was pretty unanimous. Set the draft order last night with a randomizer.

http://i458.photobucket.com/albums/q...Draftorder.jpg

Now we decide when everyone is free to participate.

Target date would be on a weekend. Sooner the better. Probably a Saturday evening? Does anyone object to that?

I think it's almost a standard in most leagues but I have to ask, are we doing a snake draft?

DuckJet 08-31-2012 04:40 PM

Yes.

2faded 08-31-2012 04:42 PM

Just curious, how do i trade draft picks? And players once they are drafted?
