Our next franchise player

Not actually based on any existing Jet or prospect, but if you had to choose, would you rather the Jets next franchise player be a Shane Doan type heart and soul guy who might not be a "superstar" in the exact sense of the term, but who can energize the franchise with a balance of scoring, physical play, leading by example, etc. Or would you rather have more of a pure star player, like a Steven Stamkos who puts up big numbers consistently, but perhaps isn't known for bringing the "intangibles"?

FYI, not asking who you'd choose, Stamkos or Doan. Not at all. Strictly playing style.

Hank Chinaski 09-04-2012 09:39 PM

I'm a little confused by your characterizations here. I don't know how Stamkos fails to bring it in the intangibles department, and conversely, I don't consider Doan to be the type of leader that I'd want on my team. Just my humble opinion, but Doan has always struck me as a borderline player who takes runs at guys. I'd consider a guy like Andrew Ladd to be much more of a character player than Doan, but I digress.

Anyhow, to answer the question: I'll take the guy who puts up points, to the exclusion of being a guy who gets pimped as a 'heart and soul' player. Guys who impact the game with physical play and leading by example are relatively easy to find.

In all honesty, I stole this thread idea from the leafs forum. I only substituted "Shane Doan" for "Wendell Clark". Which thought was a fairly accurate substitution.

I liked the thread idea and duplicated it here. I'd have to disagree with your Ladd vs Doan comparison. Doan is/was twice the character guy than Ladd is IMHO.

My ideal next franchise guy would be Joe Sakic 2.0 .

I don't want a franchise guy.

Hawker14 09-04-2012 11:13 PM

I'm gonna break the rules.

I'm happy with our own franchise player that wears #44.

A star in the mold of Peter Forsberg, would be ideal to me.

truck 09-05-2012 10:34 AM

I want a franchise player that hoists a cup.

Nothing else matters.

Crazed Fan 09-05-2012 10:49 AM

Hard to say, i would need to see more out of all of them.
Ladd, Kane, Bogo, Pavelec... all have the potential to be that person.

Hobble 09-05-2012 10:58 AM

I second the Joe Sakic vote. Or even a Trevor Linden.

Just a hard-working, class act who never takes a night off and still puts up points.

Couldn't agree more.. He is the only one for me!

I think Bogo will be our franchise player, a close second be Kaner.

But of I had to choose a type out of the crosby's, Malkins, ovechkins, stamkoses etc of the world, I'd choose a Jonathan Toews type 9 time out of 10

Bob E 09-05-2012 12:27 PM

By franchise player do you mean someone hockey fans recognize and they market the crap out of when the jets come to town? A top 10 league-wide talent that shows up early on in the annual "best player' lists?

I like a Toews-type player, who likely won't lead the league in goals or scoring, or any particular stat, but is recognized as a great (top x) player in the league. His contributions and intangibles win cup(s).

So, my pick for future would be Toews-like Sean Monahan - a player we have a chance (like everyone else right now) to draft. Like Toews, he may not lead the NHL or the Jets in scoring, but his solid 200 ft game has winner all over it. Monahan likely wouldn't sell tickets as a 'franchise player' but his game could be the difference in winning or losing a playoff series. Kane might be a franchise player too, if he scores more, develops strong leadership qualities and elevates his teammates.

IMO, Bogo is the Jets franchise defenceman with a good future supporting cast of Enstrom (still) and Trouba. He likely wouldn't sell tickets either, unless he develops into a 'Weber-type', but he's shown some leadership skills with the young players (helping scheifele, etc).

Cronin The Barbarian. ;)

I think Bogo is our Weber, I just hope this injury doesn't continue to be chronic even after surgery. Wheeler showed what he is capable of in the leadership category as well.

Bob E 09-05-2012 02:29 PM

I think Bogo will be a stud, franchise type dman in a few yrs. Very good offensively and a shut down type defensively. He can easily be a 10+ (pushing 15+) goal and 30+ assists dman, while being a physical and punishing guy to play against.

But very good teams have a few players that are very good players - that could even be considered franchise players on other teams. So, in 5 yrs, I'm hopeful Kane, Bogo, Trouba, Scheifele, Burmi, etc are all major contributors. But Kane and Bogo would most likely be our franchise guys.

Bob E 09-05-2012 02:32 PM

if Atlanta won the draft lottery in 2011, and moved from 6th to 2nd overall, I'm thinking most responses would be our franchise guy is definitely Landeskog. Oh, what could have been. ;).

Grind 09-05-2012 03:01 PM

Agree with the general sentiment that bogo fits my mold of "Franchise player". He seems to be a great character, has literally EVERY tool you want in a dman, and is a thrill to watch.

Also, I had a conversation (albeit breif) with him on twitter. It made me feel like a champ. Minds made up on whose jersey i'm getting.

Thankfully, the surgery Bogo's undergoing has an almost 100% full recovery rate.

If I could pick my next franchise player, it would be a Selanne clone.

Superstar right out of the gate. Lethal shot. Blinding speed, great smarts. Total class on and off the ice. Durable. Real top notch human being.

What a rarity to have all that in one player.

As it stands I am very happy with our Franchise player in the making, Zach Bogosian.

garret9 09-05-2012 04:05 PM

I believe the OP was in regards to...
Would you want your franchise player to be:

All-Star calibre elite player who puts up huge points and leads team in scoring

***or***

Heart-and-soul grit player who may not be super elite skilled but works hard to get decent points

Is asking for both against the rules?

Since when did Bogosian change his number to 44? The concencus seems to be Bogosian for who we currently have. I hope everyone is right. I'm not quite as sure he will be, but I sure hope I'm wrong.
I also agree with the guys who chose Toews as their ideal franchise guy. He would be as close to perfect as you can get. Him or Duchene.:D
