Mike Blunden
Where does this guy fit in the lineup this year?

Does he play more regularily?

What is your take on him habs fans?

He'll probably start in the AHL, but be one of the first callups. He's a Therrien type of guy. If a bottom 6 goes down, he'll be for sure the first call up.

If he had a little bit more skill he'd be a legit bottom 6er. He's got size and uses it to throw hits as often as possible. He gets back defensively and he will defend teammates even though he's not the best fighter.

bcv 09-05-2012 10:26 AM

i don't think he'll get much ice time in the NHL

Gabe84 09-05-2012 10:26 AM

He's almost certainly starting the year in the AHL. I think he'll have to go through waiver first, after training camp. Then, he'll be competing against Geoffrion, Palushaj, Dumont and maybe even Schultz, Natinen and Bournival to get that call-up. And that's in case of a bottom-6 injury, because IMO, any top-6 injuries will either be filled from within or Gallagher, Leblanc or Palushaj will get the go-ahead way before Blunden ever would.

So yeah... He didn't look terrible last year, but he was rather meh, and he was mostly signed as AHL depth. If indeed Blunden makes the Canadiens next season, it would mean two things: LOTS of injuries, and our young players are underperforming big time.

Andrighetto Fabolous 09-05-2012 10:37 AM

If we go 14 forwards 7 defenseman (if a D gets traded) I wouldn't mind Bluden being our 14th forward, however he'll probably be in the AHL until injuries hit us.

Roulin 09-05-2012 11:15 AM

He looked terrible under Martin, but was an asset under Cunneyworth. I'm not sure what he'll end up being. The fact that the Habs risked losing him by not giving a qualifying offer might be a tell that they don't see him as part of the future.

vokiel 09-05-2012 11:20 AM

He doesn't fit in the lineup unless more than 1 complete line is injured.

HH 09-05-2012 11:46 AM

He is on HF.

Le Tricolore.

Patty Roy 09-05-2012 11:50 AM

Blunden is an AHLer...so thats hopefully where he will be.

He can fill it at the NHL level for a few games if White goes down, but otherwise he's strictly an AHL level "talent".

overlords 09-05-2012 01:27 PM

He's pretty awful. AHL, full time.

Kjell Dahlin 09-05-2012 01:27 PM

Blunden (a big and physical winger) and Nokelainen (a right handed faceoff specialist) are worthy members of our support cast. They are fringe NHL players who can bring a valuable, tho limited, complementary input.

That being mentioned... imo Dumont > Blunden: I really like pests la Subban, Lapierre and Marchand!

Riverside Habs Fan 09-05-2012 01:33 PM

I would be shocked and appalled if this guy was in the starting lineup for the CH.

le_sean 09-05-2012 01:39 PM

I want to see him with Plekanec on the first line.

FlyingKostitsyn 09-05-2012 01:41 PM

He's not completely awful but kinda redundant now that we have more depth.

Bottom six wingers :

Theres also Palushaj, Leblanc or even Gallagher that could play on the third line.

I'd move Gomez to wing first.

What could go wrong?

Odelein24 09-05-2012 03:12 PM

I think he was overused by RC but that doesn't mean he can't be an effective 4th liner under Therrien.

He wasn't obscenely bad or exceptionally good, he's just a big dude that finishes his checks.

I remember a few games where he was on a line with Cam, just can't remember if it was due to injuries or just juggling.

At 6'4, 218, right handed, 25yrs old, he'd fit the bill next to Plekanec... if he had more smarts ;), but as a 4th liner/13th forward he's okay in my books.

DekeLikeYouMeanIt 09-05-2012 03:16 PM

I like him too for the physical games as a 4th liner obviously. White/Blunden/Prust/Moen can take care of business.

Prairie Habs 09-05-2012 07:25 PM

I'd prefer for him to stay up as the 13/14th forward and give guys like Leblanc and Gallagher big minutes in the AHL. The only problem with that now is the Bourque injury may force one of them up into the top 6 but I think that should be given to Palushaj for a final sink or swim test.

Le Tricolore 09-06-2012 02:28 AM

My favourite player on the team! :)

A pleasure to have you on the Habs board, Mr. Cunneyworth!

Ohashi_Jouzu 09-06-2012 08:38 AM

He's obviously AHL depth, on list of call-ups if need be.

Shawn Wilken 09-06-2012 08:53 AM

AHL full-time. Best chance is if there are quite a few significant injuries that allow him to get called up. I do believe he could do well under Therrien though.

Joe Cole 09-06-2012 10:56 AM

Blunden is an honest player. He does not have the skill to be a top 2 liner, but he has the skating ability, size and willingness to play a physical game to be a depth player.

Bottom line, he is a complimentary piece, and if your focus is on him, you are heading in the wrong direction.

Top Corner2 09-06-2012 11:08 AM

Right now Blunden is a depth guy at best on this team. With a few injuries (that will certainly happen) and a good camp he may get a spot on the team.

He is the type of player the Canadiens want to have around, and the type of guy this coach might love (Bill Lindsay!).

I actually like Blunderball alot & hope to see him smashing bodies in the bigs this year.

L4br3cqu3 09-06-2012 02:01 PM

AHL skill level, but does have some NHL physical attributes though, mainly skating, size and hitting. Like some said, he might thrive better under Therrien than under Powderpuff Martin and Squeegee Cunney, more aggressive and physical system. Still, given now that we have Palushaj and Geoffrion (probably their last chance), Leblanc, Gallagher who could fit on a top 6 role, Blunden will not get past the 4th line, if called up. (and him being in the press box would be way better than having one of our kids, they need to play).
